It's unfortunately timely that I'm re-sharing this mix. We truly lost a great one today, Biz Markie, the cornerstone of humour in hip-hop with his larger than life cartoon-ish personality and demeanour. The B-I-Z's discography, legacy and history in hip-hop ran deep and his crates and music knowledge ran even deeper. 

I feel extremely humbled & blessed in hindsight to have spent time with Biz Markie in Australia, having both shared the stage with him in Sydney as well as spending a couple of days hanging out in Brisbane together with his brother DJ Cool V. We did what Biz does best and hit Chinatown in Brisbane for Chinese food, went diggin' for records and vintage toys and nerded out for many hours sharing, disecting, politicin' and listening to raer breakbeats, grooves, raps, acapellas and stems. It's one of the very few times I was absolutely geeked out meeting one of my heroes. There's been too many times when I've learned  that my childhood rap heroes are actually jerks, even more-so with the advent of social media. There are too many hilarious stories to tell and memories of that tour which will have to wait for another time.

This short but sweet 14-minute promo "mega-mix" was done in one take on two decks and a mixer at the request of the promoter of the down under tour. I kept it simple and just blended 7 of my favourite Biz tracks. There's obviously some deeper diggin' to be done in Biz's extensive catalog and I'm sure there'll be some great tribute mixes forthcoming but I kept this one as is because it's from a time and a place that hopefully some others can appreciate.

Nobody Beats the Biz. Never. Rest in Peace and my most genuine condolences to his family and loved ones.

Biz Markie Megamix: 2011 Australian Tour Promo

This mix is all about education. What you have in this mix are some of my favorite hip-hop records (well, Alicia Keys isn't really hip-hop, but whatever, Kanye did his thing on that track) paired back-to-back with their original samples. Uncovering original samples and mixing them with their hip-hop counterparts is something I've been obsessed with for a while. This is what I originally intended to do on my radio show on WNYU, but I ended up just playing strictly original jazz, funk, and soul tracks that have been sampled over the years. Some of these joints you'll probably recognize, and some you may not. But, at the end of the day, hopefully, it will open your eyes on how some of the illest producers in the game can re-create and flip great, and sometimes mediocre tracks, into some amazing and timeless hip-hop. It’s 2018.  I’m selectively semi-retired but I go back to the essence.  Born and raised in the era of Hip-Hip when it was Hip-Hop.  Black music has always had a generational divide.  Your gospel grandparents looked at your parents’ music of Rhythm & Blues as something of the Devil’s music.  It wasn’t wholesome.  Your parents listened to our music as it being “not real music.”  That HippetyHop crap.  The Disco junk.  Gang music.  “You’re just stealing our old music.”  Those of us 40+..45+ years of age…look at today’s music with disdain.  Me as a DJ..I look at fellow current young DJs with disdain.  Y’all from the mp3 and controller era.  We lost our fabric.  There’s no respect for the foundation.  Therefore I felt the need to set the tone as a DJ who came from 45s and 33s.  From Red Alert, Chuck Chillout, Mr. Magic (R.I.P.) and Marley Marl and the Supreme Team and P-Fine and Sway & Tech who set the tone esthetically.  To DJs today who I love and respect who are holding true to the creative culture.  I talk that talk.  I walk that walk.  I’m competitive and open to learn from who have the ability to make me learn.  Push me…because I’ll push you.

All that being said, here we have the Best of Native Tongues, presented by me..DaManDL..live from the Boogie Down Bronx.  If you know me, I’m not just a DJ, I don’t just play songs…I’m an Edutainer.  I’m a crate digger.  I educate while entertaining.  I do research, I pay homage.  I DJ by ear, not by playlist.  I understand keys and tones, not just BPMs.  I don’t clean up mistakes, I leave them and publish as-is.  

There’s a disgusting divide between our era of music and the current wave of Hip-Hop.  They have no respect for what we laid down.  They don’t know.  If we don’t edutain them, they’ll never know. So as we go from 1987 to about 1995 on this particular mix, I need and want you to enjoy and learn from the journey.
