Real / Fake Japanese Popular Music Mix from 1914~1980 by Yusuke Wajima & dj sniff *Commissioned by Global Pop Cultures Magazine, edition: “Real Fake, Fake Realness”
Starting from the early 1900s, Japanese popular music was established through incorporating various styles of foreign music such as jazz, Hawaiian, tango, and Afro- Cuban music. Its history is full of local composers releasing under fake foreign identities, mixed race and American-born Japanese singers, and overseas groups singing in Japanese. While this hybrid music is now nostalgic and even retro, it also illustrates how colonialism/post-colonialism, ethnicity, and stereotypes have played out in cultural identities and global pop cultures. Tracks selection and comments provided by musicologist Yusuke Wajima. DJ mix, introduction, and English translation by dj sniff (Takuro Mizuta Lippit).

Parallel Traces of the Jewel Voice (2019-2021) is a project that examines how various memories and historical narratives are constructed through common experiences of sound reproduction technology. Gyokuon Hoso, or “The Jewel Voice Broadcast” in English, that announced the surrender of Japan and the end of World War II on August 15 of 1945, serves as the central reference for this project. Two tracks were composed with sonic materials that range from interviews and field recordings collected in Taiwan, samples extracted from 78 rpm phonograph discs, and recordings made by sound artists and improvising musicians. These tracks are paired differently depending on their distribution format. The vinyl release is a multi-sided record with two parallel grooves cut. A different composition will play depending on where the stylus is cued. For the digital release, each track is independently assigned to the left/right channel and heard simultaneously.

それは再生のメカニズムで録音された音楽の底にあるヴァイナル、紙、モーターの音を聴くということでもあった。

ピックアップに取り付けられたカッターナイフ、紙ヤスリ、そして消しゴムはレコードの表面を削りながらノイズ音と共振音を鳴らしてゆく 。

時折、水を垂らすことで摩擦は増し、ターンテーブルの回転は不規則なってゆく。

DRIFT-01 contains the archive of a concert of 4 turntablists improvising together was organized and recorded on 4 separate tracks on june 16 2011. These 4 tracks became the 4 grooves, which meet on each side. A special technique was used to cut those several grooves, and layer them over each other in order to make them intersect continuously on the whole surface of the disc. Playing the record produces a mix between the 4 physical sources. When you hear the sound coming from the left or right, it is physically how the pickup is drifting on the surface. The same applies to the clicks and cuts that signify that the needle has jumped. The pickup continually changes groove throughout its reading. And because it is impossible to read the 4 grooves simultaneously, you listen to one musician after the other but never reach the same listening experience as live in concert. The nature of the turntable, the quality and wear of the needle, as well as playing with different settings (cons-weight, anti-skating…) are factors that affect the reading path. The duration becomes elastic, new paths become available while some others disappear and some phenomenas of looping or going backward may occur
