#DnBforLife | JUICY JUNGLIST (Guest Mix #010- July 2023)

While working this last week I had a continuous playlist on YouTube automatically select the first couple LTJ Bukem's Progression Session mixes. Listening to those mixes again (after a really long time) totally brought me back to that mid to late 90s period when atmospheric (or "intelligent drum & bass" as it was known back then) was really cutting edge stuff. I have such fond memories of that period of time — going record shopping and playing my first big boy raves... Anyway, long story short, that spell of nostalgia made me go digging through my Rekordbox collection for suitable tunes to try to recreate that heady, spacey, blissful vibe on the stream this week, albeit with as current as possible tunes.

A large section of the first hour is all classic sounding atmospheric with that chunky drum programming. Some jazzy and funk-influenced bits thrown in there too... From there it moves into hour two with some drumfunk roller energy before slipping into "endless summer" liquid vibes featuring a nice section of classic amen rollers; some old, some new. I kept playing a bit longer again this week, since my boy Dough who usually follows me was still out of commission. Ended with some of my favorite deep soulful cuts. I had lots of fun playing this week. Big shouts to the LLL chat crew for keeping it lively!

Doing these mixes every week has brought me closer to this music. I don't think I expected that but it is pretty special to me now. I love it. Thanks guys! 
 In honor of our 52nd episode, we have a very special guest. Please welcome DARCIIDARKA....I'd have to say that me and Darcii didn't exactly hit it off when we met. I was rude. we had BEEF! ...Straight thuggin for real. hahaha. Then we met in person and squashed that shit in 2 seconds, mixed  B2B for 6 hours at a festival, and became fast friends.  Fast forward to right now. Darcii is like a sister to me. She's the shit. I'd have to say she is the reigning Queen of Central Florida dnb. Iv'e seen her upcoming bookings and she's about to be busy...like really busy... like she isn't already. Not only does she run her own successful dnb monthly, (Renegade Sound, Gainesville) She's also the hardest working DJ I know. She's everywhere! Putting in the work, grinding this shit out, and chasing her dream. Hell yeah! I admire the dedication to the craft and the respect given to this music we all love. Gwan DARCII

DARCIIDARKA is a Drum & Bass DJ originally from Burlington, VT who currently resides in Gainesville, FL. Darcii translates as ‘the dark one’ in French and over the years acquired the nickname Darka. In her earlier years she performed at underground raves, festivals and nightclubs all over New England and hosted several residencies. Within the last two years she has made waves in the southeast, sharing stages with LTJ Bukem, Bryan Gee, Jumping Jack Frost, Mampi Swift, DJ SS, DJ Craze, T.R.A.C., Aphrodite, The Prototypes, Matrix and Futurebound, FAVA, Dieselboy, AK 1200, Dave Owen, SOLA, Jaybee and Monk just to name a few. Representing the genre proper, she is the founder of the legendary monthly event ‘Renegade Sound’ at Signal in GVL and is resident DJ at both Signal and historic Simons. Making moves Darcii & Renegade Sound hosted the World of Drum & Bass 2023 Tour at Simons in Gainesville and several other events. Whether she is out playing shows or home recording mixes, promoting the genre or supporting her peers, she is extremely community driven and one of the hardest working artists in the state. Music is her life. Drum and Bass is her passion. Erica Long, A.K.A. DJ Strife, has had a love for music for as long as she can remember. It’s that feeling that when you close your eyes and simply listen…the whole world disappears.

Strife’s involvement in the U.S. underground music scene started back in 1994 when she was only 14 and attended her first rave. After this one night she knew right then that this music was something that truly touched her soul and would be a part of her life forever. She soon thereafter was going to every event on the east coast that she could, which eventually lead her to her next natural step…promoting. She started promoting for one of the largest event companies on the east coast, Park Rave Maddness. And by the time she was 16 she had made enough contacts in the scene and wanted to continue going forward by learning how to DJ – to be that person that controlled the crowd’s inner feelings by taking you on a journey with the music they wove together. At first by playing fast-paced Hard Trance and Hard Acid music that got the crowd going, but eventually at 19 while in college in New York for Audio Recording, switched to her growing love for Drum and Bass.

2003 brought the way of House DJ, Fame and his Simply Bangin’ Productions which merged Strife and Fame together for combined efforts in weekly events in NYC. By joining a night of House and Drum and Bass music this allowed them to bring both styles of music together in one place. Also in 2003 Strife got linked up with all female crew Sister NYC (the NYC chapter of successful San Francisco group). Right away this combination of all genre woman DJ’s and MC’s connected with her, and knew together they could really make a dent in furthering woman and their place in Electronic music. Being interviewed for Los Angeles collective Technotreff’s nationally distributed “Girls of Techno” DVD also gave her a chance to speak her mind on the empowerment on being a female DJ. Hosting and playing at events all the way from New York to Miami to Brazil to Germany, Italy Australia to London and back again, Strife continues to push the Drum and Bass sound that she strives for everyone to hear and feel.

2009 saw Strife release her first official worldwide mix CD on 16 Chapel Records entitled “Sweet 16 – A Drum & Bass mix”. The release received featured placements on front page iTunes US & UK Dance, Napster Electronic Staff Pick, Zune Electronic/Dance top banner, Amazon Dance, Liquid Audio/Walmart Dance & Thinkindie Dance, as well as featured interviews in esteemed UK Drum & Bass Knowledge Magazine & Dogs On Acid website. The release also reached as high as #123 on the iTunes US Dance page.

Strife's flow of Liquid Drum and Bass sounds infused with Brazilian flavor and vocal tunes make her track selection stream together with each blended mix. As well as being endorsed by keyboard company Korg, Strife has performed all over nationally and internationally at such events as: Sun & Bass Festival (Sardinia, Italy), DEMF (Detroit Electronic Music Festival), Respect (LA), Pacific Jungle & Sub:mission (Honolulu, HI), at renowned UK monthlies "Therapy Sessions", “Metric”, “Intrigue”, “Momentum”, “Accoustixx” & “Subfactory”. Strife has toured in Brazil, Germany, UK & Australia alongside heavyweights such as Fabio, High Contrast, Klute, Mickey Finn, Bad Company, Randall, Dylan, Loxy, Patife, Andy, Drumagick, The Insiders, Lomax, TC1 & Cern. In addition, she has taken part at conventions in Nashville, TN for the NAMM trade show, at Madison Square Garden in her residence of NYC for product demos, SXSW (South by Southwest) and in Miami for the WMC, (Winter Music Conference).  On the production side she has releases on DNBB Records and is a longtime resident DJ at Driven AM events.
