Here´s a recording of our b2b set with Esther Silex at the magical Sisyphos Beach. It was a short open air season for Berlin clubs. We squeezed it out at one of the last summer nights. The same day finally Berlin clubs were allowed to re-open their floors inside, after 18 months. It was a night to remember. Thanx for the wild love we got from everyone at Sisyphos.

A number of years ago there were a couple of secret parties organized by a number of golden souls. My wife, Lovisa, came home from one such party and talked about how good those parties were and that I really should go next time. What she talked about the most though was a DJ who had played at the party which was among the best she had ever experienced. The one she meant was none other than the legend DJ T. A few years later, another one of these parties was held and DJ T. was on the line up. This time I also got to experience this magic that Lovisa has raved about for x number of years. Lovisa doesn't say things like this lightly and she wasn't wrong. Delivering journeys musically is an art form and if anyone can do this seamlessly it's Thomas Koch aka DJ T. He takes you on a study in electronic music without it being obvious. It is not until some time later that you actually realize what you get to experience when he plays. This is what you now get with this exclusive mix for episodes. Most of the time I usually describe what the mix contains, but in this case I want you to go in and just listen. Completely without expectations. Trust me... it will be worth it!

I am incredibly grateful for this mix Thomas. You are a master among disciples and a beacon to follow. Thank you again and I will see you soon!

Dj Tennis is Manfredi Romano, born in 1970 and raised between New Jersey, Sicily and Parma in a family where music was such a small thing. No relatives playing any musical instruments, nothing to play at home, no one giving music any special amount of love. But despite this, his creative and artistic attitude have always centered around music - singing, playing and collecting weird and noisy musical instruments at every turn. In 1989 while studying computer science at the Pisa university (just to please his grandfather) he was already playing and singing in school bands and had an indie rock radio show on a local radio station in Palermo. 

Recording bands, organizing parties and DJ'ing at the tennis club where he used to play as a semi-pro player (the Tennis moniker comes from his passion for that sport) all became his way to support the costs of his studies. But when he graduated he never imagined he would turn that hobby into his career. Still he became a DJ anyway, while focusing first on promoting new underground music in his country and founding and developing some of the most important Italian underground musical events such as the Elita festival in Milan and the Dissonanze festival in Rome.

During the last 2 decades he started producing music for theatre, movie soundtracks and TV commercials. His production skills always take inspiration from the psychedelic dark and melancholic sounds of the 60s straight thru to early 2000’s IDM. To name a few influences: Beach Boys, The Who, Talk Talk, Ultravox, XTC, Fugazi, June of 44, Suicide, Radiohead, Godspeed You Black Emperor!, Aphex Twin, Boards of Canada and Plastikman.

In 2010, tired of the output of the actual musical scene he decided to collect all of his musical works and, with Thugfucker’s Greg Oreck, to start a new techno and pop label called Life and Death. The name of the label has a specific meaning, inspired by the socratic maieutic process to turn subtle and “dead” elements into a new life and referring to the benefit and hypnotic power of music used in the mesmeric processes for brain therapy.

Tennis is actually based in Berlin where he also shares the label experience and a studio with Tale of Us. And he has worked hard to create a crew of young and inspired musicians like Clockwork, Esperanza among others.

Life and Death Podcast Number Three by Tennis

Spectacularly closing out Cityfox LIVE on Saturday, February 29th, was none other than the duo Schwarzmann (Frank Wiedemann and Henrik Schwarz) featuring a guest performance from Chicago house legend Robert Owens. The former, two well-respected live acts of the world-renowned Innervisions label, coming together as one and the latter, a product of the Chicago music scene since before the day house music was born. Relive the culmination of the night with this splendid two-hour mix featuring masters of their craft.

Kicking off their jam with a jazzy start, Frank and Henrik faced each other from across their tables of synthesizers, soundboards and other equipment, encircled by lasers and lights, with their body movements synchronized to the sounds they were unleashing upon an eager and packed Great Hall. That night, Schwarzmann enlightened the room to the true meaning of house music in more ways than one. While Henrik Schwarz and Frank Wiedemann have graced our Cityfox events several times over the years, they rarely play together as Schwarzmann stateside, let alone alongside Robert Owens - making this performance a special aural treat for the Cityfox audience and Schwarzmann fans alike.

The jazz undertones continued throughout the energetic set with articulations of saxophone, piano, trumpet, and organ brilliantly weaved in, and also included the sprinkling of hit classics such as one of Frank’s productions (as Ame), “Rej,” a fan-favorite that aroused cheers from the crowd. Robert Owens commanded stage presence from the moment he walked on, effortlessly working the crowd and the mic, spreading the message of love at the same time while Henrik and Frank provided the beat in the background. Telepathically in sync, the three friends picked up jamming and singing easily from where they left off the last time they played together, with only a short rehearsal between them since. Robert’s enigmatic smile and his words mixed with Schwarzmann's closing melodies provided a grand finale to remember for a Cityfox night of world-class LIVE electronic music.

Dear people,

we decided to publish the set from Cologne. The set is not very good in terms of mixing. That annoys me most of us, but I won't shorten or cut anything out because I don't think I'm a DJ who would ever think of pressing the sync-button. I am not perfect as we all cannot be perfect. In addition, the monitor-boxes could not be operated at full power because there were residents around and you know that the most important thing about our music is the loud volume. "Calma Calma" dear music-police!
It is also not easy to play music these days as the most important thing is missing from such streams - which is You. You as a crowd. I miss your smile, your closed eyes dancing and now and then the little tear. Everything I see in front of me is nothing. This is strange and not complete for me.
I am very grateful for all the feedback from around the world. That left me very speechless here in little Weimar. Think of your clubs, your festivals, your newspapers, your labels, your record stores, your DJs and your musicians. They all gave and give you the food (music).

In today’s electronic music world there are not many artists who can lay claim to a legacy like that of DJ T. Born in Dusseldorf, DJ T. (aka Thomas Koch,) re-located to Frankfurt with his family in the late 70s. During his formative years, he fell for the hypnotic grooves of disco, inspired by his parents’ record collec-tion. At the age of nine he was already completely enraptured by music and that love affair continues until this very day. He began an obsessive quest to collect music, feeding his soul with everything from Disco and Hi-Nrg, through to early Hip-Hop and Electro, Soul, Funk and R’n’B. The groovy, infectious rhythms of all those genres continue to permeate into the music he makes and plays today, providing an intrinsic part of his sound ethic. 
He took up breakdancing, before becoming a DJ, playing at private parties ini-tially before landing his first professional gigs in the late eighties. This period proved to be a pivotal moment in his life as Acid House swept through Europe, landing in Frankfurt and taking over with the launch of Sven Väth’s legendary Omen club in 1988. The first wave of House and Techno took hold and T. was there at the forefront, absorbing all the fresh new sounds from Chicago, Detroit and the UK. He picked up a residency at the infamous Music Hall and held resi-dencies at countless clubs across the city during the next 10 years from Plastik and Dorian Gray to The Box. By the end of the nineties, he was one of Frank-furt’s best-known selectors. 
In 1989 DJ T. tapped into another side of his creative energy to set up Groove Magazine. Identifying a gap in the market and fuelled by a need to satisfy his own desire for specialised music journalism, which focused on his interests – namely underground dance music. Under his leadership the magazine was launched into the public’s consciousness and he guided Groove to become one of Europe’s premier dance music publications, which it still is today. 
DJ T.’s progression continued at a pace, as he launched his own club, Monza, using the experience gained through a decade of club events and tours under the Groove Magazine banner. He also invested his skills and knowledge into con-ceiving Get Physical – a label, which remains one of the world’s best- known House and Techno platforms. Though he left in 2010, T. still occasionally A&Rs for the label, lending his uncanny ability to uncover new talent to the seminal label. 
Production-wise, he has been consistent ever since his debut release, the ‘Mon-sterbaze’ EP with Steve Bug, which was released on Poker Flat in 2000. Since then, T. has released several well-received EPs, a slew of remixes and three al-bums, ‘Boogie Playground’ in 2005, ‘The Inner Jukebox’ produced with Tho-mas Schumacher in 2009 and ‘Pleasure Principle’ in 2011. His special touch has also been employed by numerous labels to curate compilation mixes , including ‘United Under The Ball – 30 Years Of Disco’ in 2011 and ‘The House That Jack Built Vol 1 & 2’ in 2012. In 2013 he celebrated 25 years of DJing with a very personal mix compilation, followed also by ‘Body Language 15’ and col-laboration with Defected and Strictly Rhythm to celebrate the latter’s 25th anni-versary. DJ T.’s reputation for being a master selector has been cemented by these superlative collections of music, each of which has received widespread praise, often featuring many of T.’s own edits of classic tracks. 
Despite so many accolades, his passion for music remains staunch, recently making several key changes to his professional life that have inspired him to explore new terrains. With hot new releases on AUS Music, Moon Harbour, True Soul and Jackathon representing his continued to desire to push his crea-tive boundaries. 
A highly-skilled DJ and producer and an A&R with an uncanny ability to dis-cover a nurture new talent, DJ T. is a master selector and one of the industry’s most influential figures.
