Stiff Little Spinners enters its 6th volume with a 5 track package spanning the widest sonic spectrum imaginable. Its tracks, in typical Spinners fashion, range from r&b influenced house grooves to shimmering, broken-beat, new-age garage swing.

Gimmix & Zorro prove their penchant for urban slow jams with a dance floor flavour. Their opener Oveile builds in a slow, sleazy fashion, eventually trading its more unpredictable drum arrangement for a sturdy 4/4 rhythm. The melody surges harmoniously, navigating the walls of its club-ready time signature, a phenomenal introduction to a mind-blowing collection of tracks.

Rampue slows things down on the A2 with Schleiermacherstrasse; a tripped-out, hazy roller with enough chime to hypnotise an entire stadium. This is not to say Volume 6 contains big room tracks, but rather the music’s power commands attention. This is certainly true for Kalipo’s Mäusemarsch, which whirls, in mesmerizing fashion achieving a climax fit for the party at its peak.

Krink’s Close Distance is perhaps the darkest sounding track offered by the Spinners – it seriousness and condensed energy is bound to leave audiences sweating, until its ferocious bassline gives way to soaring synths and jarred drums.

Joney changes the formula altogether – his sophisticated K-Hole Surfers offers a chugging, dubbed out roller which owes as much to techno as it does to dubstep. It is perhaps unsurprising from the track’s title that one feels like they are riding a rather erratic wave, delving in and out of our universe.

Already on their 6th volume, and churning out high-quality, club-ready tracks, this collective is set for big things.

Take I

Last year I met Sissi Rada. She was singing in Greek and playing the harp when I first listened to her. 
I asked her to record something with me as I wanted to use her voice for my music. We sat down, I played the harmonies on my Prophet 5 and she would jam over it. Her first take is the take you're listening to. Back then I was in my bedroom studio. We had noises from the street, roommates the next door, but the take captured the magic and the spontaneous moment of just doing music. I didn't want to record it again. 

Her lyrics are about the devastating political and financial situation in Greece and I tried - as much as I could do - to reflect that with my music.

As a self-confessed control freak, it wasn’t a realisation that came easily to Thomas Dybdahl. At the end of last year, letting go meant boarding a plane from his native Norway to Los Angeles with no clear idea of the record he was about to make or any prior friendship with most of the musicians awaiting his arrival. Over the course of a solo career stretching back eleven years, Dybdahl had very much done things his way: hand-picking his favourite musicians and establishing a rapport, all the better to tease out the hushed, soulful grain of a voice that has become something of a national treasure in his own country. All that began to change in 2011, when Dybdahl attracted the attention of legendary American producer Larry Klein. It’s perhaps not too hard to see what prompted Klein to sign Dybdahl to his own Strange Cargo imprint. Having acted as a foil to Joni Mitchell, Madeleine Peyroux and Melody Gardot, Klein must have surely seen something of all these artists in the intuitive sensuality of Dybdahl’s approach.
