DJ Terrapi from Bern has been fascinated the world of hip hop and rap since childhood. Rap was triggered him in the always a sense of freedom, the voice of a part of society, socially critical and political and as a fight against oppression. 

He is collecting records for over 15 years. He has a weekly rap show on the alternative Radio Station Rabe in Bern ('Gschächnütschlimmers') and occasionally plays at public parties. Martin Mattli aka DJ Terrapi was co-organizer of Rap History Bern, the started the first pure rap record flea market and he organized various rap events in Bern. He has always collected rap vinyl and all the formative influences of this wonderful spoken word genre such as disco, funk, soul & world with the goal of getting the audience to dance, think and have a positive impact on the environment. I'm thrilled to share my latest vinyl mix with you. During my recent trip to Turkey, I couldn't resist the opportunity to explore the local record stores and add some unique gems to my collection. Inspired by my spontaneous purchase, I decided to create a DJ set without any prior preparation and let the magic unfold naturally. The result? An exhilarating world mix with a fusion of Turkish and Arabic influences, ranging from folk to funk, featuring some of the most beloved artists from the region.

In this mix, you'll experience the captivating vocals of Nese Karaböcek in "Sevda Yolu" and "Ayrilik Günü." The legendary Baris Manco will take you on a journey with his tracks "Ölüm Allah'in Emri" and "Nick the Chopper," showcasing his signature style. Lili Ivanova & Durul Gence 5 will bring a touch of nostalgia with "Nisan Sakasi," while Semiha Yanki's "Yaz Deftere" will infuse the mix with irresistible energy.

Sound of the Bosporus Volume 1

In this session on Radio Rabe in the program "Gschächnütschlimmmers," I'm taking you on a journey through some of the most legendary hip-hop tracks from my home collection. I kicked off the set with Souls of Mischief's "93 'til Infinity" from Oakland, a timeless classic that embodies the roots of West Coast hip-hop.

Then, among others, we continue with Cali Agents and "Neva Forget" - a nostalgic nod to the golden days of underground rap, rapped by Rasco and Planet Asia. Common, a true hip-hop pioneer, got us grooving with "Gettin' Down at the Amphitheater," accompanied by De La Soul. Real Fact: Common has come a long way since his debut album in 1992 and is even an Oscar winner today!

The DJ set continues with "Cool Enough" by The Grouch, an artist from Hawaii but rooted in Oakland, and a co-founder of the legendary rap group Living Legends. An absolute highlight for me was "Still Life" by Bahamadia, produced by Chops, who thrilled us with this all-time classic.

And finally, I wrapped up the set with my favorite hip-hop band: "Break You Off" by The Roots, this unique band formed in 1987, and with their fusion of neo-soul, jazz, and rap, they've conquered the world. I still admire Black Thought's bars and Questlove's drumming to this day.

DJ Terrapi delivered an impressive selection of classic hip-hop tracks during his set, all played straight from vinyl, representing both the East and West Coasts of the USA. He kicked things off with tracks by The Roots, an innovative hip-hop band from Philadelphia known for their live instrumental sound, widely regarded as one of the most influential groups in the genre. The set continued with music from Evidence, an introspective rapper from Los Angeles who also gained fame as a member of the group Dilated Peoples, a crew celebrated for their deep lyrics and DJ Babu's scratching skills.

The mix also featured hits by Eminem, the legendary rapper from Detroit who revolutionized the hip-hop world with his rapid flow and controversial lyrics. 50 Cent, a rapper from New York whose aggressive style and stories of street life in Queens catapulted him to international stardom, was also well-represented. Of course, no set would be complete without tracks from Nas, one of the greatest lyricists in hip-hop, whose album Illmatic is considered a milestone in music history.

Finally, DJ Terrapi included classics by Dr. Dre, the influential producer and rapper from Compton, who rose to fame not only as a member of N.W.A but also through his successful solo career and work with artists like Snoop Dogg, Eminem, and 50 Cent. Tune in!

This mix came together unexpectedly. I originally set out to record something entirely different, but while digging through my vinyl collection, I stumbled upon Insanlar’s mesmerizing tracks. Their 2015 release “Kime Ne” on the UK label Honest Jon’s marked a breakthrough moment, blending traditional Anatolian/Mesopotamian instrumentation with electronic textures and spiritual lyrics—a sound that still resonates on festival stages worldwide.

The opening features beats by Turkish producer Da Poet, followed by Torky Tork with a track from his Syria album, and Australian producer Amin PaYne, whose Saffron LP fuses Arabic influences with rich, layered instrumentals (when you know me, you may heard such tracks already in other mixes :)).

For years I have been fascinated and I almost always play rap music. I grew up with rap and it developed into a passion. Over the years my own taste in music has developed and through the many samples used in rap beats I got more and more involved in the search for unheard music - at first I was only looking for music from Europe and since a long time I am also fascinated by the Middle East and music from Africa. I am always looking for danceable music at flea markets and via internet, preferably disco and funk, but also edits and house tracks full of samples from old world, funk, folk and disco records from these countries. Inspired by Ernesto Chahoud from Beirut and his Boiler Room Mix, I mixed a few of my records (yes vinyl only), most of them from Ethiopia - that's where this mix came from, actually I should call it  'African Funk Fever'. Lately it takes me an extremely long time to make new mixes - although I would have more time in the current situation). I often have records that would fit together well for a new mix, I play them, sort them by speed (BPM), note the transitions so that a coherent mix can be created after the preparation. I then start recording, mix the records as I thought about it when I listened to them before. Often, actually always, the transitions still don't fit and I often lose my patience because I don't like the mix anymore or I mess up the transitions so much. 
This pressure to make the perfect mix is so great that I don't record anything anymore. So back to the roots, I don't think about which record would fit perfectly into the mix at which point in time, so I just start recording by clicking on record button. Most of the records in my collection are already well sorted and I know them, so I can play more liberated. And that's how this short mix came up. Have fun.

Edit of the track Soleil Soleil from the Libyan singer and songwriter Ahmed Fakroun - one of the pioneers of modern Arabic World Music. The track Soleil Soleil was the first time released in 1983 on the label Paris Disques and is also on the Album Mots D’Amour = Love words 1987.

I made an edit of this track to show the beautiful old school rap parts that I find that get somehow lost in the original track. All rights of this track belong to the artist.

Every Friday evening I have a rap show together with Sam and Sasa on Radio Rabe Bern: Gschächnütschlimmers. We often have guests, the program is varied and we mostly improvise - freestyle like in the old days. This fall evening, one week after I moved back to Bern, I felt really like that I need to play some records on the radio. Without thinking twice, I grabbed some German rap records from the still unsorted shelf and I did a spontaneous set without preparing the records. The transitions between the records are partly bumpy, but the new studio equipment in the radio is top! Vinyl only. The tracklist I will may post here later.

For a long time I've put together some vinyl records for a set - unfortunately I only now found the time to record it. The result is an Italian Oldschool Hip Hop Mix with Vinyl with rap from the 90's. Rappers from the north to the south of Italy are represented, and I'm amazed that I not only have the records of Cor Veleno, Bassi Maestro but also the classic Cime Di Rap by Pooglia Tribe (from the label Funky Spagetti Laboratori ). Tune in!

Oldschool Italian Hip Hop Mix (90’s underground / vinyl only)

My project for 2021: mix as many records together as possible so I can listen to the vinyl collection on the go.

My approach: I go to the shelf, grab 10-20 random vinyl records and make a mix without matching the record to each other, without knowing the BPM in advance and the recording volume. Can come out very bad!

In this set there is Rap at its finest ;) Tune in!
