For Pride month this year, I wanted to put out and gift a song that would lift spirits and encourage the tired and (to use a colloquial term), the downtrodden. We currently living in a bizarre, almost alternate reality, where a virus has ravaged lives and decimated the world economy, where trans people are being murdered around the world for living their true lives, where LGBTQ persons face discrimination and marginalisation even in advanced and progressive societies, where women are sexually exploited in the industries they work in, where children are trafficked across the world by the rich and powerful, and not least, where experience dictates that black persons in America should literally fear for their lives every time they are stopped by a police person, ironically (and infuriatingly), whose singular job is to serve and protect them. We live in an upside down world that makes absolutely no sense.

When this song was first released in 1984 by Alphaville, it was at the height of the cold war, where our parents' generation were living under the spectre of the world ending in a nuclear war, and things were never more bleak. But, somehow, they figured it out and we all got to live another day. Likewise, those of our generation and the younger generation must continue to have hope, keep the faith and to fight the good fight. We have come a long way in achieving social justice and standing up for the weak and powerless, just this week, we saw a big victory for trans rights in America when the Supreme Court ruled against job discrimination on the basis of sexual orientation or sexual identity! I am hoping for the same outcome in Singapore when our highest court decides whether or not to get rid of the homophobic law, s377A,  sometime next year.

Wherever you are in the world, whichever community that you are part of, know that you can make a difference. So continue to speak out at every opportunity, because every single voice deserves to be heard and as proven by the recent protests and the many past revolutions, when we stop being quiet and stand up to be counted, laws can be changed and the people tasked to serve us, protect us and better our lives are forced to listen.
