Home Again #20 - Diego Krause

Circa Groove is extremely proud to present the second edition of Circa Radio with house music legend, Terence Terry.

Terence built up a name for himself as a DJ and producer within the underground scene in Paris, securing a number of residencies at Nouveau Casino - one of the most hyped after-parties around in 2003/2004 - and later in 2009, ‘Oui Now’ at Djoon where he played alongside the likes of Tania Vulcano, Seth Troxler and Clive Henry. His close alliance with the famous Freak n’Chic label saw him playing at the Batofar and Rex Club whilst, further afield, his DJing took him from DC10 Ibiza to Panoramabar and Watergate in Berlin, Goa Madrid and Fabric London.

Recorded in his studio in Madrid, TT takes you on an effortless journey through his musical history. This mix is smooth and warm, deep and atmospherical and includes an interesting selection from old school house classics all the way to new contemporary cuts.

Circa Radio will bring you monthly features allowing friends and talented artists from our roster some time to display their style.

Episode 36 meets one of my faves, German DJ and producer, @tinicouldbeworse.

Although she never intended to make it her profession, tINI has always loved music. At home in Munich, she learned to mix early on and quickly fell in love with electronic music, balancing her work and her passion until she was ready to take the leap into pursuing DJing full time. 

Since then, she’s become an artist in her own right, putting out several releases and even starting her own now-infamous event series, @tiniandthegang. Despite over 20 years in the game, her approach to DJing remains deeply passionate. In this episode, we discuss her musical roots, her dedication to her craft, and the discipline required to stay afloat in this industry.

Two decks and a teenage homemade mixer – who would have thought a school project would launch the career of the fast-rising DJ/producer John Dimas!

Drawn to the sounds of Chicago, Acid and French House, he started collecting records from the likes of Derrick Carter, Chez Damier, Ron Trent and David Duriez, before honing his skills as a DJ in his native Thessaloniki. Quickly gaining a reputation for his unique sets using three turntables and his ear for digging out a hot, rare track, naturally the international club invites followed… Le Nuit Sonore Lyon, The Rainbow Birmingham, Watergate, Katerholzig , Chalet and Tresor in his new home of Berlin.

Moving into the studio, 2008 saw his first release as duo Actor One but more recently he has been focusing on his solo productions. Conjuring up solid house basslines with tech around the edges, Dimas also loves editing to bring surprise to his sets and a few have made it onto white label. Playing live is another form of experimentation with his sets, getting creative with his own tracks to play them in a way never played before.

With EP’s on Bass Culture, Claap, Dame Music and One Records, Dimas kicked off 2013 with his debut LP. Released on La Vie En Rose, John Dimas proves he is very much part of an up-and-coming generation, pushing through with a new avant-garde house sound.

Makcim is the Moscow-born Amsterdam-based DJ/producer that’s been making classy stripped-back tech-house that’s seen release on Apollonia, Lazare Hoche and raum… musik in recent years.

A regular at Berlin’s Club der Visionaere, Hoppetosse and Arena club, this year has seen him spin at Slapfunk’s after-hours party in Amsterdam, as well as going on to play a planned set at the Fuse London x VBX showcase at London’s Village Underground next month (September).

Real name Makcim Donskoi, he regularly works alongside studio partner Levi Verspeek, who together were responsible for ‘1055ML’, which has been simply huge this summer.

‘Blorpflap’, from the pair’s recent ‘Bass Storage’ EP on VBX, is a perfect summation of what the duo can do too – wonky floor-focused tech that’s fast becoming a favourite of discerning selectors on the minimal circuit.

DJ Mag have been keen to lock Makcim in for a podcast for some time now, and for it he’s provided something pretty special, with his contribution to the series a 90-minute recording of his set at the VBX after-hours edition at BRET in Amsterdam.

Speaking about the mix, which was recorded some time between 8am and 11am in the morning, Makcim told DJ Mag, “It’s a variety of old Makcim house classics, unreleased material from Makcim & Levi, solo material from Levi [Verspeek] and a lot of re-discovered old records, including music from Thomas Melchior, Federico Molinari, Daniel Bell, Ricardo Villalobos and Franco Cinelli.

“The highlight would definitely be ‘Blorbflap’, side B2 of the 'Bass Storage' EP. You can hear it around the 1:05h mark in the mix.”

Heidegluhen and DC10 regular @subb-an steps in to contribute an hour of rolling techno infused beats to the mix series, the @one-records boss bringing that same stripped back melodic groove which has carved a niche in the scene for over a decade to this current offering. 

An accomplished producer in his own right, his previous back catalogue features releases on heavyweights such as @cocoonrecordings, @crosstownrebels and @cabinet-records to name but a few.

Expect melody and rhythm lines to be blurred and fused, basslines to talk and percussion to top the most intricate you can process. The mix is a superb capsule of his infamous sound, a mix of his origin which still offers a forward thinking spin on what’s current and yet to come in dance music.

Keep an eye out for Subb-an's forthcoming releases on Seven Hills, Superlux, his own One Records, plus a remix on Uttu for DJ Haus.

There are DJs, and then there are DJ’s DJ's.
Julien Veniel, artist name D’Julz, is undoubtedly one of the latter - a true craftsman behind the decks whose true strongest skill is his ability to go beyond mere genres and trends, deciding instead to actively shape the ever-changing soundscape of electronic music through his own productions, DJ performances and parties.
Through a career spanning three decades, D’Julz has practically done it all. He began spinning in Paris, often playing his home city’s much-talked about early 90’s raves and legendary clubs, all before moving to New–York in 1993 to further hone his skills and cement his reputation as a true taste-maker in his field. The rest, as they say, is history.
Despite finding himself in high demand in every corner of the globe, from the States to Japan and countless countries in between, D’Julz has always remained true to his roots in Paris, where he has been running the now legendary “Bass Culture” night at Rex club since 1997.
In tandem with the birth of his party D’Julz has dedicated a large amount of time and energy into the production side of his musical output. Solo-wise his music has been signed to some of the world’s finest underground labels – Circus Company, Robsoul, Ovum, Rekids, 20:20 Vision and more. Since D’Julz started producing he has been responsible for a long list of tracks and remixes that have become essential weapons in the record boxes of the world’s DJ elite.
As a DJ he exudes class and panache. A gifted curator of music whose pedigree has earned him a loyal international following and a constant tour schedule which sees him travel the worlds major cities every week playing the best venues they have on offer. Not to mention the infamous Circoloco (DC10) where he has held a long-standing residency, taking charge of the main room and the world-renowned red terrace room several times each summer season. Each set demonstrating D’Julz’s uncanny ability to weave his penchant for dub elements into the house and techno sphere and rocking DC10 with potent groove and sultry rhythms.
D’Julz remains as enthusiastic as he was when he first started DJing, as his Bass Culture label goes from strength to strength, clocking over 50 releases and he continues to traverse the globe rocking dance floors every weekend.
A true legend and one who will continue to be at the top of his game…
