Ushka is a “genre-blending” DJ baddie from New York City. And just as NYC is a melting pot of all types of peoples and cultures, her sets reflect just that. A signature Ushka set can expose you to “house, amapiano, afrobeats, kuduro, vogue, jersey club, soca, dancehall, reggaeton, k-pop, bhangra, techno, pop, heavy bass” all at once.

Outside of the club, Ushka has a career within activism, tackling issues such as immigrant rights, social justice, and climate change. She has always been for the people and by the people. Through her entire body of work, Ushka has always championed Black, brown, and immigrant communities and we are so lucky she gets to share that storytelling with us through her explosive DJ sets.

"This mix is a journey through the range of my emotions coping with the dystopia we are living in. 2017 was a really intense year for a lot of us and the political anxiety in the U.S. for folks, especially immigrants, people of color, and queer and trans communities, is palpable. I wanted to make a mix about defiance, about rising above white men in power, about not losing yourself in the bullshit, fighting hard, maintaining joy, being gentle with yourself, and the power of letting go and shaking your ass through it all. Ushka and @Atropolis team up to produce a commissioned track for Mel Chin’s “All Over the Place" featured at New York City's Queens Museum. The track is featured as part of "Soundtrack" -  a new work of collaborative sound art initiated by Chin with project curator Jace Clayton (aka @djrupture). Ushka and Atropolis used audio clips from subway rides, train tracks, voices and instruments on subway platforms to produce a piece that reflects both the frustration and beauty of a long and far too often delayed and stalled subway ride. iBomba co-founder, Ushka, took the club from New Jersey to Trinidad during their Boiler Room Off Camera takeover recorded live in Brooklyn.

For over 5 years iBomba has been at the forefront of pushing progressive club sounds from across the globe in NYC. In May 2018 we partnered with them for a special Off Camera event in Bedstuy. The night featured sets from Berlin’s Perera Elsewhere, Brooklyn MC Cakes Da Killa, Philly’s Precolumbian, and resident DJs Ushka and Beto.

Ushka's Dutty Artz Mixtape Monday release - Foreign Brown - weaves through hard hitting bass for the dancefloor meets good tunes meets message best felt through your hips. The 37 min mix weaves themes of migration - Lido Pimienta sings of la migra and Copia Doble Sistema remixes Sonido Guay's tune of a person migrating north. With shout outs to women of color, #idlenomore (Tribe Called Red's track in solidarity with Chief Theresa Spence), Ana Tijoux's Shock in support of Chile's student protest movement,  Zuzuka Poderosa's Pisicodelia with it's themes of anti-violence. The mix journeys through latin, hip hop, electric powwow, samba, bhangra, african (kuduro, azonto, naija), soca, champeta, house, electronica and carioca bass.

Ushka Mix on DJ Florentino's NTS Radio Show

Ushka is a Sri Lankan-born, Brooklyn-based deejay traversing genres across electronic club & bass music. She deejays from the perspective of a dancer, blending a wide range of global club music. She has performed across the U.S, Mexico, and Canada - including at institutions such as Brooklyn Museum, Lincoln Center, MoMA PS1, American Museum of Natural History, Rubin Museum, The Shed, Toronto's Harbourfront Centre, and Montreal's Fondation Phi. Ushka has been a staple in NYC's queer nightlife, having run the @ibombanyc party for six years and djing parties such as @papi-juice, Gush, Ragga, Bubble-T, No Nazar, Laylit, Moonshine and more. In 2018-2019, she was the artist-in-resident at the A/P/A Institute at NYU and she produced an audiovisual film about migration and an experimental DJ performance as part of The Shed's Open Call.
