WELCOME TO THE WORLD OF CVNT, a world where voguing dominates, and house in all its forms, past and present, ballroom to retro, is the musical language.

After a sterling debut in 2012, which included support from Hannah Holland (Batty Bass), JD Twitch (Optimo), Bok Bok (Night Slugs), Rushmore (House Of Trax), Severino (Horse Meat Disco) and voguing/ballroom legend Vjuan Allure, CVNT (aka Niall Connolly) is back with a brand new four track EP on Body Work, 'STATEMENT'.

"There comes a point in the life of all ballroom children where, if they want to become legendary, they must make their "statement". To make the progression from being a star, or a face at vogue balls, to being someone who is recognised for their talent. To build a reputation, to stake a claim on becoming an icon, every child must make their statement, and this is mine.

I don't walk balls, I make music for other people to walk balls to. So my statement is not a look, it is not face, or body or femme or a dance or a dip or couture: my category is music. My statement is right here in these tracks.

I'm not looking to simply ape the sounds of the New York legends - to be a true statement I have to stay true to who I am and where I come from. That's why I seek to fuse elements of British grime and garage to the New York ballroom template. In the end they are all forms of the genre we call House, and House music is what unites all the children, no matter what their category. With my statement I hope I am showing respect for the original legends while pushing things forward."

As well as being a talented producer and a popular DJ, Niall is also a highly respected writer and blogger, who has written articles on vogue/ballroom culture for Boing Boing, Red Bull Music Academy, Dalston Superstore and The Skinny, and is a regular contributor to the American alt-culture blog Dangerous Minds.

"This is a primal after-hours mix. It’s very percussive, drum-heavy, at-moments psychedelic and has some old Goa trance gems in there. I have been loving all the curiosity around trance music [lately], in particular the more psytrance and Goa trance stuff. My parents live in Goa and I’ve been going since I was eight years old. Every year, there’s a big multi-day psytrance festival there called Hill Top festival. Now I’m seeing the crossover of this iconic trance music and that makes me very interested in expressing that side of myself more in my music."

“These spaces are sacred." The Brooklyn trio reflect on 12 years of throwing parties that celebrate New York's queer community of colour.

New York nightlife has a truly unique ecosystem. And for the last 12 years, the art collective Papi Juice has been right at the center of it, hosting parties, workshops, artist residencies, performances and exhibitions that affirm and celebrate the lives of queer and trans people of colour.

In this RA Exchange recorded during Pride Weekend in Brooklyn, reviews editor Kiana Mickles sits down with the Papi Juice trio—Mohammed, Adam and Oscar—to talk about intersectionality and how they've maintained their principles and political integrity by continuing to put their community first. The DJs and multimedia artists have been active in leading fundraisers for Black trans organisations and archiving queer nightlife in Brooklyn. They recently received an award from the City Council of New York for their contributions to culture and have partnered with institutions like The Brooklyn Museum, MoMA PS1, El Museo del Barrio, Creative Time, The Metropolitan Museum of Art and the Leslie-Lohman Museum of Gay and Lesbian Art.

In this interview, Mohammed, Adam and Oscar reflect on meeting for the first time, navigating New York's cabaret laws, creating a distinct visual identity, learning to work through internal conflict and differences in taste, and working towards a shared vision across many years.
