Joining DJ Funghoul as their first ever guest on the show is eclectic fellow Scot, ZEMA. Zema is ½ of the independent label Meld whose bandcamp is a real goldmine and champions underground leftfield sounds all across tempos and genres. Zema’s sound delves into bass, breaks, tribal & latin rhythms and has supported the likes Nikki Nair,  Interplanetary Criminal, Breaka, Bakey, Sarah Story and many more. 

As well as being a power house of a DJ, Zema is also a wicked producer and has had releases on Breaking Concept, Gimme A Break and is currently working on her solo debut EP to be released in the middle of the year.

ZEMA for Dusty Dan & Pals IV @ Dalston Den [live DJ set]

This is my honours project, inspired by NASA's Golden Records 'The Sounds of Earth' and their proposed sequel 'The Gold 45 Prototype' by Anna Brownsted. These are records that celebrate humanities achievements, and cultural/natural depth and diversity,  this piece seeks to paint a picture of the past and present of Aberdeen city using sound maps and audio archives. Some of my own recordings mainly of the sea are used as well.

Created during COVID-19, the piece takes the majority of its sounds from the public art project "Aberdeen soundsites", a local soundmap which was created by Pete Stollery and northern group sound. This is available online and gathers audio uploaded by people throughout the city at various locations.  engage with soundsites and keep growing it through contribution here :

Other sounds are taken from historic documentaries about the city, which tell of it's character and its industries. Aberdeen is known as "the silver city by the sea", and the city for many centuries has grown and prospered thanks the offerings of the North Sea. The sounds from soundsites show and celebrate this prosperity. 

The 'route' that the record takes is intended to show a journey through the city but also through time, jumping between the past and present to build a picture of the city which is both current and historic. The record intends to provoke thought about the future as well. 

The records route attempts to remain true to the audio's locations within the soundsites map where possible. We begin with the sea and move along the shoreline, through the docks, harbour and Pittodrie football stadium. A bus arrives to take us to the city centre, we get off at the bus and train stations, followed by a walk through union square, and onto the streets of the city centre. We go to the Art Gallery, Union terrace gardens and down past Schoolhill and Belmont street, through Bon Accord mall and onto George Street. Here, the highlight is the sax player, who was a well known and loved busker who recently passed away. Some humorous dialogue can be heard upon entering the fancy dress shop. From George street, we travel by bus to Erksine street and continue on towards Aberdeen University, then spending some time there.

We then wander through the scenery that surrounds the University of Aberdeen along the River Don. We can imagine the Don carries us along to the Airport at Dyce. A helicopter carries us back to the ocean, to the site of the North Sea Oil Fields. Resources separate from the soundsites are here used to paint a picture of the oil industry which allowed this city to prosper so greatly in recent times.

We are taken back to the Piper Alpha oil rig disaster which occurred on 05.07.1988, beginning with a prayer from a survivor which was recorded at the memorial situated at Hazelhead park. An explosion occurred from the over exploitation of oil which devastated 167 workers lives, some from Aberdeen, and some from other parts of Scotland, England, Europe and the USA. This is included as a memorial to those locals who lost their lives to the pursuit of oil and industry. It is also included to provoke thought about the future of this city, its nature, environment and its inhabitants, and what industries might better serve and protect our nearer and more distant collective future. 

A city situated and reliant upon the sea is beautiful, beneficial and terrifying. 

The record will be coming soon to vinyl, and is currently available on CD, tape cassette and in digital format.
