If you listen closely while sitting out in the back garden, you'll make some delightful discoveries, and backYardboy is one of them. The Barcelona-based French producer and instrumentalist is the latest addition to Mapuche Records and makes a dramatic entrance with his first EP. Six striking tracks do justice to the record's name, Algo Mareado ("a little dizzy"). Thrill-seekers will enjoy being transported to dizzying new heights by the dreamy reverb tinged with haunting rhythms that hark back to the artist's Beninese and Togolese origins. Although Algo Mareado is an essentially dub creation, attuned ears will certainly appreciate the variety of influences that can be heard in backYardboy's music. Infused expertly with ambient jazz, house and electronic notes, this is an EP that will bring elation to anyone looking for an out-of-body musical experience.

Plusculaar was born in Rumania and got in touch with music and the clubscene at a young age. When he entered a club with his brother for the first time, he was suddenly impressed by it's atmosphere and already knew that music would be playing a big role in his life. He was looking for a reflection of himself in the music and after more nights spent in clubs with stunnung sets and deep moments, he felt that he had to learn playing to impress hiself. After a while he could already feel happy about having success in Amsterdam and Romania, playing DJ-Sets with Pack Osuna and Florian Meindl. These experiences showed him, that it all just had begun and that there was more to come. To impress his own spirit better, he started to produce music, and releases on vinyl Labels like Enough Music, Cardinal, Fluegel & Inwave followed. In 2014 Plusculaar founded his very own label, Binaural Arts, with tracks of artists he was impressed by. The music speaks for itself. One thing is sure, there is more to come and to expect by Plusculaar: his way just started and he is ready for this ride. We are looking forward to more good vibes, smiles and happiness delivered through his sound. Keep an eye out for that guy!

Magical timing too, two hours after I finished this mix, I thought to myself: "perhaps to play Tony halfway in this mix is a nice idea"....but then an hour later Isis texts me the legend came to pass, so this coincidence makes even more sense."

My dearest San Proper! 

My close friendship and musical connection with San Proper goes back many many years. 
San is someone that is an avid reader of books in the most varied of subjects, especially music history, therefore words, poetry and writing in general are very powerful tools in this artist's personality. With that said, I can't go without writing about him from a personal perspective, as it is also in line with the design of this mix series. 

Too many amazing memories to list but here are some:  

Maybe around 2010 when he was scheduled to play live at fabric and the airline lost his luggage. It was late and I was trying to help source the gear that was missing, he messages and goes: rather than live on uncertainty I am going to work the live with what I have. It was a very limited set up, I remember walking in to Room 1 at the start of his live set then reading on the stage desk: 'FUCK YOU LUFTHANSA!'
THIS is Dr. Proper. Even with a such a limited set up he absolutely rocked this room in the best way possible. 

Other remarkable memories is that San always joined afterparties in my loft in London and he always carries a field recorder on him. Outside my house in Dalston with me and the adorable Masomenos couple, Adrian and Joan, and on the way to Kristina Records San was filed recording the sounds of the cars in Kingsland Road, hence the now widely known 'Auto Sea' track out in 2013, also part of his Animal album. 

San Proper branches the realms of artistry beyond borders, it includes being a musician, producer, dj, record and books collector, a performer, an entertainer,  an enigmatic character with a heart of gold even though the animal persona attempts to hide that, hehe.

Toi Toi Mix Series 29 by San Proper

Quand il se retourne Zu se rappelle que sa culture est brute , authentique , faite à l' usure des semelles.
Né dans les années 80 , les réseaux sociaux n' existent pas , il se forgera donc grâce aux rencontres, à l' échange, au hasard.
Plutôt que de tenir un mur il choisira de prendre le train , de la banlieue à Paris, le voyage...
Avec ses acolytes ils se créent un univers bien à eux, engagé.

Engagé c' est ce que l' on retient de celui qui ne se prend pas pour un artiste mais qui pourtant a ce regard, cette sensibilité.
Il ne sourit pas mais il voit, il voit des figures de BMX là où nous voyons juste une rampe d' escalier, il voit un graff sur un toit désert, il voit une teuf dans cette usine bringuebalante dans laquelle on peut encore entendre l' âme des ouvriers.

Il est sombre, il est de l' ombre mais derrière ses platines il s' illumine, il s' ouvre, il partage.
A ce moment  là il nous emmène en voyage , il faut tendre l' oreille pour l' accompagner. 
D' une banquette de RER nous atterrissons dans un squat pour basculer peu après dans l' ambiance d' une soirée UK, mâtinée de Jamaïque et puis c' est au détour d' un bois que nous sommes maintenant, on y entend le son lourd d' une rave, la rave des années 90, la secrète... Bloc-party, odeur de peinture, c ' est la  culture Hip-Hop ... et soudain l' ambiance se fait plus lascive, la torpeur des baile funk du Brésil , c' est envoûtant.

Mais qui est-il ? Il laisse glisser ses doigts depuis plus de 20 ans au grès des sillons noirs de ses disques et pourtant on se pose encore la question.

Si l' on doit retenir une seule chose c' est que Zu est inclassable, il ne se range dans aucune case. Alors le mieux pour le connaître est encore d' aller l' écouter jouer , d' aller voyager...
