To celebrate 20 years of building Labyrinths, we have decided to release one set from each of the last ten years. I've chosen ten timeless moments that both document the history of the event and provide a historical snapshot of underground electronic music over the past ten years.

We have chosen a broad range--from closing techno sets, to morning ambient sets, to experimental sets to close the night. Each set represents a different side of the event. Taken together, they present a portrait of a decade of music.

‘1 of the microhouse events, that took the name Space Edition, and hosted the Canadian Mathew Jonson, a member of Cobblestone Jazz, and 1 of the founders of Wagon Repair record label. That evening, Mathew divided the music area with Donato Dozzy, a resident DJ and famous today in the international electronic scene. In this recording, Dozzy is playing at the opening, while the set of Jonson, is in the central part. There are 3 or 4 jumps in the track, because that night the recorder had some problems’.

SHEA Radio #079: The Hacker

Michel Amato's contribution to electronic music can barely be overstated. As TheHacker, and under different aliases, he has inspired generations of dance music fans and artists. Since his first release in 1996, Amato had a Techno phase, dipped into EBM, sci-fi tinged Electro and New Wave, but is perhaps most famous as a founding father of Electroclash. He met a kindred spirit in Miss Kittin and together they became of one the most iconic duos in electronic music, with hits such as 'Champagne' (1998) and 'Frank Sinatra' (2000) selling hundreds of thousands of records.

In 2004, Amato released his most well-recieved album to date, 'Rêves Mécaniques', and the years since witnessed Amato put out a wide array of club mutations on many leading labels, including a double LP for his own label Zone.

Today, he is as in-demand as ever, with a highly-acclaimed album, 'Le ThéâtreDes Opérations' landing on Dark Entries in 2017 and contributions to tastemakers like Helena Hauff, Erol Alkan and Veronica Vasicka's labels since. In the live and DJ environment, Amato is as revered as he is on record, playing high-profile events such as Dekmantel, Berghain, Nuits Sonores and Off Sonar.

When it comes to techno, electro, and more importantly Electroclash, few can argue The Hacker’s credentials. The Frenchman was instrumental in the formative years of these movements and being active since the mid-90s has meant his discography is positively bursting with pivotal moments from electronic music. It is nearly impossible to discuss The Hacker without mentioning Miss Kittin, with some of their work such as “Champagne” EP including seminal tracks “Frank Sinatra” and “!982”. This is of course only a small, but not very important part of The Hacker’s story. With a string of solo albums and countless EPs to his name, the cross-section of electronic music that The Hacker enjoys is wide. We are so lucky to release this mix for our 37th entry, recorded live at SmartBar (Chicago) by our friend and excellent DJ Shanti!

From the artist:
I am so grateful to be able to share this mix with you all through PPRZ! This is a mix that was recorded at Smartbar in Chicago when I opened for Lady Starlight as part of Justin Aulis Long's series, Flowers of Romance. It was a 3-hour long set from 10pm-1am on a Pioneer V10 Mixer with 3-4 CDJ 3000s. 

What I love about opening sets is having the ability to set the tone for the night as people are arriving and making the transition from wherever they came from to the communal embodiment of dancing. The other fascinating element about an opening set is the dramatic contrast between the beginning and end as one first experiences an empty dance floor and sees the gradual process of it growing with energy and feeling even though I can really only see beautiful silhouettes moving in the darkness. I take an opening set to be about the gradual cultivation of energy but also an opportunity for creative tension and exercising restraint for the headliner and rest of the night.

Bio:
Shanti is a Chicago-based DJ who explores philosophical themes of existential angst and ambiguity through surreal, foreboding, and atmospheric soundscapes. Her sets weave a story of the simultaneous despair and yearning that are intertwined with the human condition. 

While she is thoughtful about curating multifaceted energy and emotion within her sets, she also co-curates events such as Otherworldly Ambiguity as Evanti, a conceptual experience centered around the phenomenon of hybridity, occupying the spaces in between and outside of pre-existing concepts and rigid categories. She is also a part of Chicago-based DJ collective and label, Research & Development which is a mix series and curator of multifaceted music-centered experiences.

Bleak, beautiful, and utterly locked in. EPs 1 through 5 trace Evigt Mörker’s early path: from cavernous ritual techno to shimmering, slow-burn transcendence. Each record stands on its own—but mixed together, they feel like one long breath held in the dark. Cold pressure. Deep time. Pure atmosphere.

Evigt Mörker — EPs 1–5 [Live Mixed Sequence]

Until he launched his own Radio Matrix label with a clever and conceptual series of EPs in 2014, Delta Funktionen was exclusively tied to Dutch stable Delsin and its sub labels. It is there that he has roamed from techno to electro to dub, and there that he has put out a string of EPs and coherent full length over the last decade. Unlike many of his underground peers, Delta isn’t too serious and likes to have fun when DJing, so can go hard and fast or deep and warm according to the context. He often marries analogue and digital techniques in his work, takes cues from traditional hotbeds like Detroit and Chicago, but always comes correct with his own unique perspectives.  

Across the course of 75 absorbingly sci-fi minutes, the Dutchman cooks up a cinematic ride through deep space atmospherics, electronic funk and slick electro. The latter half grows more disturbed and dystopian, but there is always a very real and metallic aesthetic to the seamlessly segued sounds that ties the whole thing together with real narrative. 

Dekmantel Podcast 066 - Delta Funktionen

The Hacker has long been turning out essential electro sounds that show off his mastery of his synths. But November will see him reveal another side when he releases analog album Le Théâtre des Opérations on Dark Entries. It finds the Frenchman indulge his love of EBM, techno and wave music and cook up a rugged, gritty and raw selection of tracks that joins the dots between Jeff Mills and Front 242, Dopplereffekt and Drexcyia. It’s arresting and unpredictable from start to finish. 

Happily, the live artist and producer indulges all those passions and more on this blistering one hour mix. It explores every facet of electro, from squelchy and dark to smooth and grooving. It’s a history lesson, really, that takes us through the musical adventures of The Hacker as well as electro at large. Turn it on, turn it up and turn yourself on to a master of the form.
