You never know what you're going to get if you see the name Hieroglyphic Being on a record or a flyer, but there's a good chance it'll be some of the best, most jacking house you've ever heard. Jamal Moss embodies the the spirit—and the past, present and future—of Chicago's house music scene, but he also carries the torch for Afrofuturism, free jazz and avant-garde music. He follows in the footsteps of important figures like Sun Ra and Ron Hardy, his work blending these traditions with a healthy dose of post-punk, too. 

For over two decades, Moss's Mathematics Recordings label has been one of the premiere sources of raw, analogue house music, helping put producers like John Heckle on the map. He has a sprawling solo discography, encompassing projects like I.B.M., Members Only and The Sun God. He also put out one of our favourite albums last year with Thank U 4 The Tracks U Lost, released on Modern Love under his given name.

Live, Moss usually jams on a few pieces of gear, to fantastic and sometimes bewildering effect. This RA Podcast is a two-hour recording of a live set from public records in New York. It features all the raw, powerful house music you'd expect—made with two iPads and a MIDI controller—but it's also loaded with gorgeous, ghostly melodies and an opening section that touches on trance, trip-hop and '90s electronica. This is a rare live recording that captures a genius at work.

Dj Sotofett and LNS have established themselves as independent artists not bound by the convention or shackles of ‘industry’. Over the years they have released some of the most innovative and interesting records across a plethora of record labels including Wania, Freakout Cult, Honest Jon’s, SUED and many more.

For years Dj Sotofett has been the powerhouse behind the Sex Tags family of record labels and has never been one to be pigeonholed often releasing music which is hard to place or define. It’s wild and chaotic – just the way we like it. Over the years he has dabbled in Dub, Techno, House and beyond. One thing is for sure though, it’s always been weird and wonderful.

LNS has formed a strong relationship with the Sex Tags family of labels, releasing a number of records in collaboration with Dj Sotofett via the imprint. She has her own label, LNS and has a busy and consistent release schedule which leads to her records being found in the bags of discerning collectors and DJ’s all over.

In recent times the pair have formed a close relationship with Tresor, the longstanding Berlin label and club which has been pivotal in the evolution of underground Electronic music. It appears the pair share a similar sensibility to the DIY ethos which has always been associated with the club.

This year saw them follow up the release of their album on the label with a new EP on the imprint.

As a producer, Lamin Fofana makes ambient music that makes you think. His painterly compositions may be beatless, but they're full of movement, expanding and contracting from modulations and shifting frequencies to create a sense of infinite vastness. This immensity of sound creates a cerebral mood, allowing the Sierra Leone-born talent to explore sociocultural issues close to his heart, like the geographies of the African diaspora and what he calls Western rationality in music.

He translates this heavy subject matter into textural sound using narrative structure, field recordings and archival material. The final product could be an album or an audio-based installation. Rooted in themes of identity and belonging, his exhibitions seek to disorient the senses and have been shown around Europe, including the Biennial in Venice and Liverpool.

On his RA Podcast, the New York-based artist presents an all-original mix of loopy techno that mirrors the dynamism of his ambient productions. Laced with acid and pulsing synths, these cuts are faster paced and geared for dance floors, but they share the atmospheric touch of his earlier work. Based on the interview below, it seems like we'll be seeing more of this side of him in the year ahead.

My sound has evolved a lot over the past year living in New York. While I feel everyone knows me primarily for my percussive broken beat productions and sets, anyone who's seen me play recently will know I've been leaning heavily into driving psychedelic techno and hard groove house. So I wanted to make something that reflects my evolving tastes.

In that sense this mix is very much a statement of range and intention. I'll always love UK Bass and broken beat stuff but there's nothing like a good deep grooving wormhole to lose yourself in as a DJ and a dancer. 

Also, having been heavily involved in plant medicine this past year I've been making an effort to incorporate sounds that connect with my experiences in ceremony—sometimes light and joyous, often dark, cavernous and all-consuming. But, not to take myself or this vision too seriously, this mix is first and foremost for moving your bones and shaking ass, but in a hypnotic sort of way.

Hope you enjoy it start to finish.

This year at Diane's I needed to release some pent up Acid Mama energy after being held hostage by my work captors for a few days leading up to the campout. Don't be fooled by the first half hour- this recording is probably best enjoyed during intense workouts, at home dance parties while candy-flipping, or any time you need to work something out of your system, like I did that night. Very grateful to the Diane's crew for setting up such an incredible sound system and party in the woods once again, where I was able to create my own little sound vortex.

I haven't posted a live DJ set for a long time - so here's one from this summer's Rural Festival held in the mountains not far from Nagano in Japan. It was my 2nd year at the festival, and I had an amazing time playing from 2.30-5am, with my set starting in pitch black and ending with the sun emerging for the last moments of the set. Big shouts to all the crowd and of course the organisers for having me back!

Happy New Year one and all! We hope you’ll agree there could be no better way to start it off than with a second mix from the one and only Ben UFO. Think of this as side-b to last week’s side-a as, says Ben, “I went about this in the same way I would go about making a tape: two distinct but related ideas that I think work better on their own than if I'd tried to jam them together somehow.” It is another standout selection that showcases the Hessle Audio co-founder’s dual skills as both a tireless digger but also a technically skilled and accomplished DJ. 

Where side-a was an often heady affair with plenty of open space for you to get lost in, side-b plots a more high pressure and intense trajectory. It’s the peak of the trip that really gets you on your toes as it hurries through slamming grooves and a whole history of electronic music. The kick drums come on thick and fast throughout. Some feel blissed-out and dreamy, others feel dark and menacing. There are nods to the funky dread of hardcore, slither of electro and swing of UK garage along the way, and every new drop helps colour the mix and ensure it is anything but a linear and predictable affair. Once again mixing crate-digging smarts with a rare dance floor dynamism, these two Dekmantel mixes are the sound of Ben UFO at his best.

By any measure, Or:la has had a busy and impressive rise when it comes to bookings and growing as DJ over the last few years. Born in Derry, Northern Ireland’s second-largest city, she left for Liverpool back in 2012, attracted by its vibrant music scene and the buzz of living in a new city. Here she bought some turntables, started buying records, all whilst investing herself into the local nightlife. Wanting to provide an alternative for people to party in Liverpool, her and fellow DJ Breakwave set up Meine Nacht, a very DIY club venture that involved shopping around for previously unused locations such as old supermarkets and defunct police stations and throwing 7am finish parties. Although she's now left Liverpool, her time there helped form Deep Sea Frequency, the label she now runs and helps curate with Breakwave. Now on its fourth release with a four-tracker from Carlton Doom, the label catalogue includes an inaugural release from Or:la herself, with Valencia-based producer Pépe and the ever in form DJ Seinfeld lending their talents for the subsequent two records.

She's quickly attained a large fan base, much in part to her bridging the line between underground credibility and her often playful narrative when it comes to mixing. Her 2017 Boiler Room set from AVA Festival is a great example, running through dreamy and deep selections from Carl Craig midway, followed by club stormers from Josh Wink and Sterac closely round the corner. Amassing close to a million plays in the space of a year, she hasn't gone by unnoticed, with her abundance of tour dates looking increasingly further away from her hometown of Derry. We caught up with Or:la to discuss the news of her new label Céad, the Deep Sea Frequency artwork and some of the most enjoyable places she's played over the past year. Her Truancy Volume, which she describes as being filled with moments of order into disorder, is a ram packed hour showcasing her bold vision of techno, breaks and acid.
