Q. How would you describe yourself?
A. I’m a very reserved and private person. Definitely on the “let the music speak for itself” vibe when it comes to my career but I also find myself applying that to every facet of my life the older I get. People are usually surprised when they meet me in person because they assume I’m more “out there”, which is hilarious to me. My real friends know I’m a big clown though haha.

Q. How long have you been a part of the NY music scene?
A. That’s honestly hard for me to answer personally. I was born in Philadelphia and grew up in Los Angeles but my first trip to NYC was in 2015. I came here already having a solid year+ of remote collaboration with Kush Jones and got to know a lot of people born and raised here. Since then people also assumed I’m from the Bronx, which I’ll gladly joke around with but I actually moved to there late 2017. For the first year living uptown people didn’t register that I was based in NYC because 98% of people in our music scene have never been to the Bronx. Once I moved to Brooklyn in 2019 it was a pretty aggressive upward trajectory. It’s always wild to remind myself the first time Kush and I played Bossa even was 2019.

Q. Tell us a little bit about this mix.
A. Recording this mix was a fluid expression of myself, how I listen to and experience music while high. The only prompt I gave myself was “what do I want to listen to on 420?” and I recorded it first try. I never go into DJing anything with a lot or if any preparation. The process of putting my mind to a subject, theme, type of crowd and space in the moment then going off that energy is such a release for me. Once I see the effects of those decisions on my end, I go on autopilot and the consistency of the outcome is secondary in my opinion.

"You can't take a sound and exclude the people who created it and say, this is our sound," DJ Noir said in our 2020 feature about Juke Bounce Werk, the label she-cofounded. "No, it's either Chicago footwork or it's other." 

Back then, the Los Angeles-based imprint and crew was still primarily focused around footwork, but Noir and co—including artists like Kush Jones, DJ SWISHA, Surly and Sonic D—have branched out into all sorts of uptempo sounds, touching on house, UK garage, jungle and funk, but always with the fleet-footed approach that makes JBW what it is. "We used to sit down and say, we have to make 160, or we have to keep it footwork and juke," Jones said in that same feature, "but we are also like, if you are strong and developed in another sound, then you should also be free."

Sitting atop this empire of boundary-breaking, innovative dance music is DJ Noir, who is one of LA's best uptempo DJs, or honestly, of any genre. Her sets can be speedy and intense, sure, but it's the way she lets off steam at just the right moments, or gracefully dips into halftime, maybe even a spot of dubstep, that really sets her apart. The LA scene is spoiled to be able to see her DJ quite frequently, but along with the artists she tirelessly promotes and develops with JBW, she deserves a wider, more global spotlight. We hope her RA Podcast might convince you of that, too, an hour of remarkable DJing and skillful blending that connects continents and scenes, from Alix Perez to INVT to Nikki Nair and Bastiengoat. BRC :  "I’d say the mix was like water, a natural flow that we usually lock into when we’re DJing together."


3024: What DJ inspires you at the moment / has inspired you throughout the years and why?

BRC: "For inspirations, I’d say a lot of the greats who came before us that we’ve had the opportunity to perform with. Juan Atkins, Carl Craig, etc. We haven’t had the opportunity to perform with him yet but Goldie is also an inspiration. These are folks that paved their own way ya know."



3024: What are you working on / what have you got forthcoming? 

BRC: "BRC 3 is in the works and is slated for release next year. We also have individual projects slated for release next year also."

"My return back to Berlin this year has been pretty hard, and when I feel down I find myself digging out brighter tracks. I guess it's a Libra balance thing. I made this mix to illuminate the more colorful spaces in my mind and to try and teleport to the euphoric atmospheres of a rave."

"Nobody did it the way Earl did," says the Moveltraxx label of the time they first fell in love with this Chicago producer 10 years ago. On December 4th, they will mark the milestone by putting out his sophomore album, BASS + FUNK & SOUL. In between his debut and this first solo album in four years, Earl (@djearlchi) has continued to shape juke and footwork with music on Hyperdub, Planet Mu and Teklife that combined tragedy and ecstasy with hyper speed BPMs. Frankly, the title of the new record says it all, with those sounds making free associations with old school samples and new school rhythms that are unafraid to head off in bold new directions. Whether deep and soulful or frantic and club-ready, it's a record that leaves you breathless.  

And of course, so does this mix, a thrilling one hour selection that chews up and spits out a dizzying array of drum patterns and vocal samples with carefree abandon. Trapping you in a high pressure loop one moment then lifting you to the heavens on a wave of euphoria the next, it features plenty of material from the new album as well as some classics. This, then, is high class body music that has the power to swell your heart and give your brain just as much of a work out, quite often at the exact same time.
