"Since I was a little kid I have found a safe space in music," said ISAbella (@bellasalmonella) on her Instagram recently. Nowadays, the Colombian DJ uses music to create those same safe spaces for other people. She is a resident at Barcelona's influential Macarena club, where she runs the Mistress night which aims to empower women and give visibility to the underground. She is also co-founder of MARICAS, a queer night that has hosted parties in Barcelona, Paris and Amsterdam and spawned a vinyl-only label that launched in 2020 with a thrilling EP of house, breaks and electro from ISAbella herself. 

All that features in this week's podcast, which is a smooth and serene trip to the deepest recesses of the dance floor. It finds ISAbella laying down bumping drums and punchy rhythms throughout, but always with a sense of warmth and positivity. There are heady cosmic melodies, nostalgic chords and sci-fi motifs among the way. At times things feel futuristic, at others, there is a sense of retro familiarity, but it adds up to a mix as stylish as it is effortless.

We begin our podcast series with a recording from one of the great DJs of our time, Vladimir Ivkovic, playing the final 3 hours of Bakk Heia at The White Hotel in May 24. 

In typical Vlad fashion there is a distinct and unique narrative quality to the mix. Whilst genre defying psychedelia churns into spikey IDM, and wailing post punk iterations flow into mainline acid stomp, there is an over arching sense of tenderness to the selection. Vlad told us after the lights came on that it was his intention to hold and take care of us that night. Transforming the spiralling chaos of the club environment to one which nurtures, rather than obliterates, our frenzied minds.

based between edinburgh and london, noodle is part of the grdn collective and can often be found playing in clubs around edinburgh’s cowgate, most notably sneaky petes. leaning towards soundscapes that are acidy, dubby, sparkly, all the good stuff, noodle’s selection is glorious and can be delved into via her residency on ehfm where she flows through her softer side or at her club night, neurons, which raises money for mental health charities.

Welcoming the lovely Refuge Worldwide co-founder and dub-master @richard-akingbehin to the Animix series this week, with a beautiful journey of minimal house infused with his signature dub styles.

Clear in his DJ'ing, but also his work with @refugeworldwide, and his immaculately curated label, @kynant-records, Richard is an all-round classy selector, and a champion of community. Through his various outputs, his deep & considered knowledge and taste shines. 

Richard always impresses me with the diversity of moods he presents via his DJ'ing, hybrid collaborations with legend Tikiman, b2bs with other legends like livwutang, and his label - a diversity that's always strung together with his incredibly distinctive psychedelic, soothing dub formula.
