Over the past decade, Santiago-born, Mexico-based producer @tomasurquieta has harnessed his own brand of noise. His sounds are heavily textured, often distorted, and range from hammering techno bangers to intense flurries of drums and caustic synths. It is protest music that gave rise to his excellent 2018 long player Duenos de Nada and has continued to challenge the system ever since with a mix of futuristic and political, anarchic and metallic 12"s. 

This week's podcast was recorded on a cold night in Brooklyn and the idea behind it was simple but effective, says Tomás. "I put together some new and old tracks I’ve played in my recent gigs." As such it is a fine snapshot of what to expect from him in the club right now - bold rhythms, dystopian moods and plenty of industrial, ambient and IDM influences. It's a physical selection that is constantly on the move and densely packed.

Advice for the DJs, producers and artists of our community:
Don’t just focus on music. Please. Live. Your. Life. Go for a hike, skateboard, bake some cookies, practice shibari (consensually), it doesn't matter. The fastest way to burn out on producing and DJing is to solely focus on just that. In addition, inspiration comes from so many different places outside of just listening to other people’s music, or even your own. Don’t be afraid to be different, we’ve all heard enough “edits” to keep us satisfied going into the summer. 

Also, please remember that community is everything. The whole “self-made” this, that, and whatever, is just not true. You need people and chances are those people probably need you too. Please don’t lose sight of that when trying to achieve your goals, especially at a time when it’s increasingly apparent that the governments/institutions we “trust” make it clear they don’t care (or probably know anything) about any letter or number in LGBTQQIP2SAA. Stay safe, drink water and Free Palestine, Congo, Sudan and all other colonized/exploited nations.

About the mix:
Transitions can be hard. I recently uprooted my life in one city, to move to another. As a result, I’ve been working through a lot of depression, anxiety and frustration, acclimating myself to this new environment. 

In this time, I’ve been listening to a lot of music, in particular a lot of the tracks in this mix. That said, I feel like this mix encompasses a lot of what I have been feeling in this stretch of time, both consciously and unconsciously. Music, no matter how harsh and/or aggressive, can be therapeutic and help redirect a lot of potentially destructive energy into something positive like dancing, or even productive (like work *eyeroll*). Hope this mix finds you well and it makes your day and/or life better!

What was your inspiration for this mix:

Trying to play kind of half way house music and techno. Trying to keep it sassy and funky. The records are always the inspiration and Chicago is one of the greatest places in the world to find beautiful dance music records.

Favorite DJs of all time:

Probably Claude Young or DJ Rush. Listening to their mixes was very formative to me. So rough nasty and wild as music should be

Where was the first place you played?

A venue in downtown Des Moines, Iowa called Vaudeville Mews which isn't around anymore, in 2014 doing like, rock and roll music and industrial and noise music.

Hmm, truth and joy are very in whereas bitterness and greed is out. 

Advice to the new upcoming DJs:

I'm unsure if I'm qualified to give advice but I would say it's important to study the history of music and I think great DJs start out as great dancers and music lovers

What's next for you in 2024?:

Hopefully putting out some new tracks after a little hiatus from production. I'm also planning on getting more records and getting better at DJing
