Kyoto-born, Berlin-based DJ, producer and artist, Alex Kassian has become a firm favourite of ours over here at Phonica over the past couple of years. His sophisticated, lush and organic sounding productions have been picked up by labels such as Paramida’s Love On The Rocks and Alex Bradley’s Utopia Records in recent years. His most recent release, Leave Your Life, was released in 2021 via Pinchy & Friends, and we can safely say it was one of our most-played, and bestselling, records of the year.

Together with Hiroaki OBA, Alex is also one-half of Opal Sunn, who have been operating their own imprint Planet Sundae since 2017, through which they self-released a number of EPs, catching the attention of and support from dance music luminaries such as Andrew Weatherall and DJ Sprinkles.

Not only is @theokottis joining our podcast series this week, but early next month he will join the label family too. His new Lighthouse EP is a perfect encapsulation of the Scotsman's style - house, techno and electro fusions with a knowing nod to the 90s and plenty of both physical and emotional impact. It's his first work since a "self-imposed creative reset" and comes after previous outings on the likes of Permanent Vacation and DGTL that have established the Space Dust label and party founder as someone who is as effective as he is unpretentious whether making or playing records.

His mix for us is inspired by recent gigs and is made up of tracks that were particularly well-received by the crowds. It's two hours of slick selections cross the house, techno and electro spectrum so, says Theo, "there's something for everyone to dance their way into 2024." And he's not wrong: this is exactly the sort of impossibly groovy soundtrack you want to warm you up and get you going with just the right balance between head and heel.

She’s the German-born/Vienna-based cofounder of Freeride Millenium, sometime host for Munich-based online platform Radio80000 and holds down a spicy residency at intimate Stuttgart locale Romantica. Bringing a whole ton of positive energy to her sets and releases alike, among them those for Permanent Vacation and Robert Johnson, Jorkes mashes up jocular disco with every house classic you can name. A key focus to her work too is the elevation of issues related to gender and queerness, making her a shoo-in for the Hydrash endeavour. It’s a cheeky and salacious celebration of life, a middle finger to imposed normativity, one that ramps up the serotonin minute by minute. Bassiani Podcast 205 is cheeky and fearless, a no fucks given mix packed full of glistening synths and euphoric diva vocals, feel-good rhythms from the Bassiani floor.
