This is Part 2 of my Mystery of the Motherbeat series of DJ mixes. I’ve wanted to record this mix for a long time as a follow-up to my 2018 mix by the same name. Both are a fusion of styles used to build a psychedelic hypnotic soundscape for deep listening and personal synchronization with the heart of Motherbeat. No big hands in the air moments to speak of here, just deep mixing and some of the most beautiful records in my collection. About the mix: Recording from my first gig of the year at Nowadays! This gig was so special in so many levels; I felt a surge of excitement and nervousness coursing through me.

From the perfect booth to the sweaty dance floor and a crowd that is there for the right reasons - make this space so magical. And so it felt in the same way to play for the first time there. Atmosphere was palpable and the hours flew away, they melted in sweatiness, connection and transformation thru music.

Truancy Sessions S01 E01: suade (@whoissuade)

New year, new sounds! Introducing Truancy Sessions, our latest mix series dedicated to elevating the underground music scene. With eight episodes per season, we'll be looking to amplify the voices of emerging DJs and longtime Truants friends, all while collaborating with talented designers and artists. Our mission is to cultivate connections and celebrate people with an ear for music from every corner of the globe, be it people we've seen on our travels to friends we've made at festivals and clubs. For our first season, we'll be collaborating with the exceptional designer Kushagra for all things artwork, and for our debut episode we have a seamless blend of mesmerizing grooves from San Francisco-based suade (@whoissuade) for a transportive musical experience. Here's a glimpse into what suade has in store:

"This mix is a cruise through some records I know I’ll love forever - rolling, percussive, driving, and euphoric sounds. Put it on for a nice drive, a long run, getting ready for a party, or maybe just to hype up your work day. I spend a lot of time in the shapeshifting, hyperactive world of bass-driven music and I have an equal love for timeless grooves, long blends, and dreamy sounds. Sometimes these feel like mutually exclusive worlds as a DJ. The latter is what I’m reaching for these days, in a slow and reflective period of my life, and what I bring to the mix. It consists mainly of records from the mid 90s to early 2000s with some newer releases sprinkled in there. I decided to avoid maximalism and opt for a steady ride through a few key ideas. I’ve been wanting to record something like this for a while, so I’m super grateful and happy to be sharing it here. Truancy Sessions S01 E01: suade

AGY3NA (@agy3na) draws on many different things when it comes to the music he plays and the messages he shares. There is an intersectionality to his identity as a gay black man growing up in Germany that informs everything he does from DJing to promoting parties. He has a background playing baritone and percussion, has a degree in psychology and a master's in cognitive science, and continues with academic research alongside his music pursuits which blend house, electro and Afrofuturism in all new ways. What underpins it all is his focus on feelings of freedom and playful rhythms from across many different genres and decades.  

All that bares out across this week's mix which unravels over the course of 90 subtly uplifting minutes. It's a peaceful selection to start with where gentle rhythms and organic pads awaken the soul before vibe-fuelled house ups the energy levels. AGY3NA unobtrusive, efficient mixing style then works through Afro-centric grooves, broken beats, and worldly percussion which all bring vigour and vitality and leave you feeling high on life.

Not many people can combine the worlds of contemporary, avant garde and club sounds the way 'A Colourful Storm' label head Moopie can. Having birth the label out of the highly regarded mix series of the same name releasing names like Klon Dump, Valentina Magaletti and some beautiful compilations curated from Time Is Away to name a few, Moopie real name Matthew Xue, has shown he has a phenomenal ear for the diverse and interesting. This same ear also applies to his outstanding DJ sets which have seen him join stages with the likes of Ben UFO, Helena Hauff as well as taking the helms recently in Pickle Factory all night long to a solid packed venue til morning. For this mix Moopie has supplied us with a live recording of his opening set for Objekt and CCL in Melbourne. A perfect example of his vast stylings bringing the mood filled room into a raucous party. We had a quick chat about the mix, whats coming up and the label with the man himself.
