From obtuse angles to intense physicality, Peder Mannerfelt’s highly individual take on techno demands attention and consideration. While his many-sided body of work reaches back more than a decade, the Swedish producer’s current investigations in the field of experimental dance music are as prolific as they are unpredictable.

To date he has recorded an accomplished series of albums as Roll The Dice alongside Malcolm Pardon, explored a more direct strain of techno as The Subliminal Kid and also lent his production skills to Fever Ray’s acclaimed debut album and 2017’s Plunge.

It is under his own name that Mannerfelt’s sonic imprint can be most acutely felt at present. Alongside appearances on Hinge Finger, Numbers., Lazy Tapes and more, he established his own Peder Mannerfelt Produktions label to carry the bulk of his output, and that of kindred spirits like Klara Lewis, Machine Woman and Sissel Wincent. EPs such as Transmission From A Drainpipe and The 3D Printed Songbook and LPs Controlling Body and Daily Routine all feed into a distinctive abstraction of contemporary techno. It’s an approach at once engaging and challenging, rendered in even starker terms when Mannerfelt takes to the stage.

Employing subtle props and working with striking visual accompaniments, Peder Mannerfelt’s live shows bring the immediacy of his art front and centre in your cerebellum. It’s the perfect mutation of music still rooted in the kinetic energy of techno even as it seeks to break down the genre’s rigid, illusory formulae. By extension, as a DJ he spans the propulsive and the crooked, the classic and the unheard, the strange and the straight-up in a limber, instinctive fashion that complements (and is equally fueled by) his own productions.

Kraków-based Olivia is an Unsound resident DJ, always taking on new challenges. The local electro, Detroit and italo connoisseur has had a great 2018, with her debut EP Skawa finally being released, and more international dates appearing in her calendar. Elena Colombi is one of the fastest rising DJs of recent months, known for her eclectic mixes and a fascinating NTS show. The Italian-born artist is based in London, where she came up as a promoter. An open-minded DJ who doesn’t specialize in one particular genre, her dynamic sets are a frantic mix of pulsing techno, freaky disco and proto-house. @elenacolombi and @olivia-ungaro played a b2b set at Unsound 2018. This year is the 20th anniversary of Dutch label Creme Organization. Its consistent complications of sounds from West Holland and beyond have won it a reputation for high quality, innovative techno, among other genres. To commemorate, we caught up with its boss, DJ TLR, and asked him some questions. And, of course, he provided us an exclusive mix to match!

Based in the Bay Area, @aunteesam of Club Pansy got their start DJing relatively recently. With their storytelling background as a filmmaker/editor and their strong sense for what it means to get lost in the emotions of a dancefloor, it feels like they could have been DJing for years. Viewing music as a universal language, their mixes are jubilant and connective — this is music for smiling at your neighbor through the fog, for uplifting one another, for heading home with a full heart and a changed mind.

"Music to smize to. As a filmmaker/editor by day, I really enjoy storytelling, evoking feeling, and creating a sense of warmth through the art. It’s not a perfect story, but it has a beginning, an arc, and a resolution.

This mix is bright, has some tight hugs of acid, and groovy bass lines to get your feet kickin’. I’m sharing music that combines my love of dancing and feeling sanguine - This mix is full of tunes that please my soul. I recorded this using an XDJ-RX2 and some studio monitors."
