The second host of this series is the pioneer of the Birmingham electronic music scene, the man behind several projects which changed the electronic music scene, the Downwards founder, artist and producer REGIS.

LET LOVE DECIDE, written by REGIS, is an extract from the one-off performance LET THE NIGHT RETURN by Karl O’Connor aka REGIS which took place in June 2019 at the Ancient Theater of Epidaurus in Peloponnese - Greece. 
A remarkable UNESCO world heritage site devoted to Asclepius - the Greek god of medicine. The 2,360-year-old, 14.000 capacity open-air Auditorium which is still standing in its original form and shape, as the oldest and last remaining blueprint of architectural acoustics, naturally became the ideal setting for the act. 
In LET LOVE DECIDE Regis is shifting between his signature acoustics old and new, designing a huge spectrum of his deep personality while using his incredible cult voice.

Anna (she/they) is based in San Diego and is a DJ, Program producer for arts & culture organizations, and a partner of Hotbed US ( @hotbed.us ), a San Diego/LA-based collective that focuses on groove-centric genres from around the globe.

Across nine years, Anna has played various venues here in SD from Spin, Wicked West, EQ, Part Time Lover, Music Box, Casbah, and more, as well as warehouses and DIY spaces in SD, TJ, and LA. Between gigs, Anna works in contemporary art spaces, focusing on programs and event production and community partnerships, and has worked to foster strong connections between smaller organizations and nonprofits to museum spaces over the past seven years.

Set the Mood with DJ Serko!

For DJ Serko, a perfect opening set consists of several key elements. First and foremost is a slow tempo. While most club sets are high-energy and fast-paced, an opening set provides the space to experiment with lower BPMs and minimalist elements. It’s a rare opportunity to set a unique tone for the night, easing people into the atmosphere rather than overwhelming them from the start.

Another essential aspect is genre exploration. An opening set allows room for sounds that are often overlooked, such as wave, cold wave, downtempo, and ambient. The gradual build-up of energy is just as important as track selection, creating a flow that invites listeners into the night. When DJ Serko first started going out in Amsterdam, he was deeply inspired by the slower tempos and adventurous selections of artists like Beesmunt Soundsystem/BSS and Max Abysmal, as well as the sounds he encountered at venues like Garage Noord, De School, and Claire, and the countless radio shows on Redlight Radio. This mix serves as an ode to that formative time—a reflection of the atmosphere that shaped his musical journey.

Hailing from Amsterdam, DJ Serko is a multifaceted artist with a deep-rooted passion for underground music. While best known as a DJ and producer, he is also a drummer in the band Whalefall, one half of the techno duo FLOU, and an organizer of Auris listening sessions in Amsterdam. At his core, however, he is simply a raver, constantly exploring and sharing the music that moves him.

His sets normally defy genre constraints, seamlessly weaving together old-school house, techno, breakbeats, and experimental sounds. He has a strong affinity for vinyl, recently shifting his focus toward vinyl-only sets and championing music from the underground scene, including tracks from friends and lesser-known artists. Whether diving into ambient soundscapes or high-energy rave selections, the music DJ Serko plays is a reflection of his boundless curiosity and commitment to musical discovery.

"It starts within yourself." The DJ, vocalist and producer talks about self-improvement, moving to rural Portugal and working alongside long-time partner Steffi.

There may be no voice as rich, vibrant or easily distinguishable in today's house and techno scene than that of Virginia. The Brazilian-German DJ, producer and singer has earned a name for herself as a hybrid house vocalist and a resident at Panorama Bar, where she plays sets featuring her own live vocals. Born in Munich to a family of musicians, she became enamoured with the soulful singing of artists like Sade, Whitney Houston and Tracy Chapman, who became her early guiding lights. It wasn't until her adolescence, when her sister took her to a nightclub, that it crossed her mind to begin blending these two musical worlds. By the mid-2010s, Virginia had relocated to Berlin to earnestly pursue a career in electronic music and create a new, house-focused musical vocabulary that's become completely her own. 

It was around this time that Virginia met her long-time partner, fellow DJ and producer Steffi. In this week's Exchange, she speaks with Chloe Lula about their personal and creative relationship, and their love of collaborating together in the studio and behind the decks. After more than two decades in Berlin, the couple relocated to rural Portugal in 2020, a move that's opened up a world of abundant rest and opportunity. They opened up a studio and residency called Candy Mountain (so called for its veritable candy shop of synthesizers and hardware), where they've found a new appreciation for taking things slow: going on walks in the countryside, engaging in botany and inviting friends and collaborators over to work on music. She reflects on what it means to step away from the demands of Berlin's bustling music industry and why her voice has remained such a powerful source of energy and inspiration over the course of her career, and her forthcoming album with Steffi on Dekmantel, Patterns of Vibration.
