Martyn is the finest example of an artist who exists outside traditional genre boundaries. Ever since the mid-90s, the Dutchman has operated in his own adjacent worlds while drawing on UK bass hybrids, techno and electro to cook up singular rhythms and unique moods. The 3024 label head has always used his platform to bring through new talent, and now also mentors young artists with his own Patreon program. This sits next to his ever spell-binding performances in the club and eye-opening monthly Darkest Light show on NTS, which is a deep dive into his love of jazz. 

This week's mix is a 70-plus minute snapshot of Martyn's sound, which is as timeless as ever. From the crispness of Detroit electro to the off-beat thump of bass via his deep techno lit up with glistening electronics, it is a perfect blend of body and head and one full of brazen moves. There's a switch to jazz-laced broken beat and low, then the slow wobble of dubstep before a rebuild towards old school jungle that proves this is the sound of a true master at work.

Londoner Josey Rebelle is 'just' a DJ. She doesn't make records, she plays them, but she plays them like no one else. Her impeccable taste and ability to join the dots between disparate genres in the club, on the radio and with the compilations she puts out has won her countless awards. She is known for drawing on her Caribbean roots as much as she is for the passion she pays with and the authenticity of her selections. Whether old or new, jungle or soul, a Josey Rebelle set is a thing of joy.

And she proves that for us this week with an almost two-hour mix that traverses a dizzying amount of terrain. It's a club-focussed trip that fizzes with apocalyptic energy before taking off into worlds of cosmic techno, twitchy club music and supple jungle. The drama comes as much from the mixing as the tunes but one thing is for sure, there is no real way of knowing whether you're listening to sounds from the past, present or future.

This is part 1 of 3 of the recording from my set at Nowadays Nonstop on April 7, 2024.

I played from 9am-3pm, between JASSS and Bearcat, and it was one of the most creatively fulfilling sets I can remember playing – one of those sets where the audience, environment, atmosphere, tech setup, phase of the moon, whatever, all somehow lined up for a full 6 hours. And happily, the recording is maybe my favorite I’ve managed to capture to date. Huge thanks to Kristin for inviting me and to everyone who was there that morning.

Live at Nowadays 7 April 2024 - Part 1

The producer best known as Huerco S. accompanies One Day, our record of the year, with two hours of minimal and dub introspections.

This summer, Kansas-raised DJ and producer Brian Leeds released One Day under his revived Loidis alias. Enamoured with the restrained, loopy sounds of early '00s dance music, the album’s eight tracks linger in the air, luxuriating in dubbed-out chords, swung beats and sub vibrations. It's our favourite record of 2024 for a reason. 

It's a sound he's coined, in his typically teasing fashion, "dub mnml emo tech." All winks aside, it’s no wonder One Day became the soothing balm we all needed. In a scene overwhelmed by hard and fast trends, the softer—and Leeds might argue, more sincere—stylings of minimal and dub techno enjoyed a welcome second wind. 

Not only was One Day one of our favourites of the year (more on that this week), but it also inspired us to break our usual no-repeats rule, inviting Leeds back to the RA Podcast under a different alias after his 2019 turn as Huerco S. 

"The prevailing trends in dance music are more and more maximalist," Leeds noted. "I missed restraint, subtlety, and sensuality." Clocking in at just under two hours, RA.965 embodies that ethos in spades.
