UK dance music has always been defined by its eclecticism. And few artists capture that better than @yazzus-1. Both her sets and her productions are turbocharged tornados that collide rave, breakbeat, techno, jungle and footwork. They are playful and knowingly over-the-top, take in plenty of bootlegged edits and have landed her on labels like Diplo's Mad Decent, Mall Grab's Steel City Dance Discs and the legendary Hospital. She co-runs her own Rave Litany party and has DJed as part of the 6 Figure Gang so basically never takes her foot off the gas, whatever she is doing. 

It is no surprise then that this week's mix is one of the most hard-hitting we have had in a while. Everything is turned up to 11, from the fast mixing style to the faster beats. It explores all kinds of techno from bass heavy to twitchy, raved-up to old-school nose-bleed. Later on, there are warp-speed explorations of juke, footwork and club that leave you gasping for breath but desperate for more. Strap in!

JASSS (Silvia Jiménez Alvarez) is a Berlin-based DJ, producer, and sound artist from Asturias, Spain. A former resident at OHM and Berghain's Säule, her 2017 debut Weightless on iDEAL propelled her onto the global stage, with performances at Sónar, MUTEK, and beyond. She has held residencies at EMS Stockholm, Galeria Zé dos Bois, and Villa Massimo. In 2020, she released Turbo Olé / We Solve This Talking on Whities, further cementing her avant-garde approach.

As the label-manager of Herrensauna Mauro is curating the trademark visuals and artwork of the brand, label and it's events. Next to being a Herrensauna resident, Mauro is as well the founding member of Porto based queer party "Arena Spa Superiora". 
Musically DJ Saliva brings together a hybrid fusion of old school & hi-tech new school sounds. From up-tempo electro & breaks to trippy & hypnotic tribal materials."

"Fado, mellow whispers, beth gibbons, psychic tv, melancholic guitars, final fantasy, lee gamble, unreleased songs of mine and more.

The tittle of this mix was inspired on Inês de Castro, a Galician noblewoman who fell in love with Prince Pedro of Portugal while he was married to Constança of Castile. After Constança’s death, Inês and Pedro lived together, which alarmed the court. Fearing her family’s influence, King Afonso IV ordered her execution in 1355. After becoming king, Pedro took brutal revenge by having Inês’s killers executed and their hearts torn out. The Quinta das Lágrimas in Coimbra is traditionally believed to be where Inês was killed or wept before her death. The Fonte das Lágrimas (“Fountain of Tears”) is said to still bear the stains of her blood.

I’ve released many dance mixes, but this one is for the mornings when we wont leave bed — to sunlight peeking through blankets, to the purges, the tears, the retreats, and the quiet return to lullabies and sad songs for recovery."

The 17th entry into the Aula Magna Podcast series is a superb mix by Medellin's mysterious rising artist Verraco. In very little time he has strongly stated an eclectic sound as a producer, exploring the boundaries of techno, electro, ambient and IDM on his label Insurgentes and on his DJ shows at South American festivals like Dekmantel Bogota and Festival Tatacoa. Keep your ears on this one...

Aula Magna Podcast 17 - Verraco

SHXCXCHCXSH’s techno is as mysterious and abstract as their artist alias. The Swedish duo has remained anonymous since their debut in 2012, largely because they believe that existing in isolation makes it easier to be creative. And they sure have been that, with a spotless run of EPs and LPs on Avian and Rösten that balance light with dark, noise with groove. Though the pair produce famously heavy, dense and gritty soundtracks, they never forget a powerful underlying groove that makes them an equal part artful noise band and compelling techno duo. 

Their mix for us is made entirely of their own new compositions and is aimed directly at the club after a few years making non dance floor material. It bares that out across an idiosyncratic hour of broken rhythms, fizzing synths and distorted textures "but we didn’t want to repeat tired old patterns and processes and tried something new. This experiment gave us a new way of working with rhythms and we never had as much fun in the studio. Much of the material that came out of the experiment is in this mix and much more will come out as one album called OUFOUFOF on our own Rösten in October, and one EP on Mord in November." As such the mix has all the dynamism of a impromptu live set as it shifts from the sound of malfunctioning machines to apocalyptic techno and back to anxious ambient. Unpredictable and challenging, it’s the sort of mix that leaves you thinking WTF and immediately heading back to the start for a second run, just to try and work out what you just heard.
