The first apple exclaimed, "I'm full of worms! Anyone who eats me is in for a nasty surprise."

The second apple cackled, "My seeds have so much cyanide, anyone who so much as nibbles my flesh will instantly die."

The third apple sneered, "That's nothing, just wait for what I have in store."

And at that moment, three children approached the apple tree, two boys and one girl. The first boy plucked the first apple from the tree, and took a bite. His face contorted into disgust, and he spat his bite onto the ground, seeing half-worms in his half-apple. He cried and ran away to his single mother.

The second boy walked up and plucked the second apple. He took a bite, and at first it tasted very sweet. But the poor fucker rapidly went into cardiac arrest and died.
So then the girl goes to pick the apple, but she's smart. She plucks the apple, but does not eat it yet. She goes home and slices the apple open with a butcher knife: no worms. Then she does chemistry and science to the seeds and determines that they contain no cyanide, or at least not more than what apple seeds naturally contain. The apple should be safe to eat, or so she thinks.

She bites into the flesh of the apple. It was so juicy, so sweet... but suddenly a feeling of urgency crashes over her. Time is running out, and she only had a few seconds to begin with. She cries out, not in words, but in raw emotion. She realizes where she is, what she is, *why* she is. Her blank surroundings, the formless tree, the nameless boys, the apple that isn't even green or red... she understands her true nature, her true purpose. The girl, apples, worms, seeds, boys, tree, everything was just an abstract image in a higher reality. But she's more than a joke, more than art, she's an *idea*. A worm becoming an apple becoming a boy becoming a girl becoming a seed becoming a tree. She smiles, closing her colorless eyes, accepting herself and the ephemeral world she was given as it returns to oblivion.

You smile too. Your world is no less miraculous, no less transient. No less inexplicable, no less absurd with an absurd, ridiculous, nonsensical punchline made out of construction paper. Naught but your own self-symbol, a horse and a bar, a chicken and a road, a worm and a seed, a thought and a thinker, a girl and a boy, an apple and a tree.
