Nadine Shah announces new Single Fool and Album Fast Food

Having earned an early reputation for that uniquely rich, soulful voice; Nadine Shah released her debut album Love Your Dum and Mad to critical acclaim in 2013. A stint on the road with Depeche Mode followed whilst opening for Bat for Lashes and playing live at Vivienne Westwood's Red Label London Fashion Week show provided notable highlights on an extensive tour. Created with trusted collaborator and producer Ben Hillier, the excellent follow-up Fast Food is out on 6 April via Apollo / R&S Records.

Born from a fervent two-month writing session, Fast Food exists on a knife-edge – every bit as dramatic as we’ve come to expect from Nadine but with a sharpened eye for all things hook laden; retaining a brooding grandeur in its musical movements. 

Building on the bruised honesty and charm of its predecessor, Fast Food rings with the confidence of an artist completing their most coherent musical chapter to date. “The last album took so long to make that by the time it came out it didn’t feel like it was a very clear representation of where I was musically, but this time it’s different,” Nadine explains. Fast Food is a more concentrated effort: it is the sound of Nadine Shah as she is now, stepping out from behind the piano and growing with immeasurable confidence.

Nadine admits that Fast Food is a reflection upon short lived, intense, complicated relationships. "I suppose it's a coming of age album of sorts lyrically. Rejecting the romanticised idea of 'perfect' love and maturing in respects to relationships and accepting partners pasts".

With love comes heartbreak: “But it isn’t begging for your sympathy, it doesn’t wallow in self-pity” adds Nadine. “It’s unapologetic and, I hope, empowering.”

Speaking of the scarcity of keys on the new album Nadine says: “I felt quite restricted just sat behind the piano all the time on stage, so touring really catered for the way this record sounds. Everything started on guitar whereas last time Ben re-wrote piano parts for the guitar.” All the more addictive for their rarity, the piano provides light relief to Nadine’s all-important, enigmatic vocals. Yearning and tender yet billowing and aggressive; they weave a tale full of anxiety, vulnerability and nightmares. 

Setting the pace with this beguiling and exhilarating listen, Fast Food cements Nadine Shah as one of the UK’s most exciting and enthralling talents. Whether it’s the brutal honesty of the love stories, the brooding, crystalline guitars or even the rich, soulful vibrancy of her voice, Fast Food is an immediate, lavish and wholly vital album for 2015. 

‘Fool’ is the album at its most bitter, but like everything Nadine touches there is a wry humour and sweetness beneath the poised menace of its guitars and spitting lyrics. “When I mention damn Nick Cave and Kerouac, I’m pointing out someone’s predictable nature, but Kerouac is my favourite author and Nick Cave is my favourite musician” she explains, tongue firmly in cheek.

Songs like this seemed to pour from Jason, without end, snaking behind him like a gunpowder trail. I didn't know him well enough to know what else was behind his song, moving at the same speed. 

This song, from Jason Molina's "Let Me Go, Let Me Go, Let Me Go," was the song that caught up with me. I must've bought the record right after college cuz it was already an old friend by the time I bumped into the man on the street in Bloomington Indiana. I'd just started working on music and thanked him for this song that night in front of the Buskirk Chumley Theatre on my way to a friends' house. He didn't shrink from the compliment. Instead he thanked me back and then asked what brought me to Bloomington, what I thought of it, if I was a musician myself, if I'd like to play him a song, etc. I was pretty stunned by the social grace of this guy. 

Happy birthday, Jason. Wish I could meet you again now that I'm a little older. I wish more people felt the way I do about your music and I wish you could've found your health before things caught up. 

To everybody else, Happy New Year! 2016 will be a good year.

London-based electronic songwriter Ryan Lee West aka Rival Consoles to release his most personal work to date in the form of a mini-album titled ‘Night Melody’ through Erased Tapes on 5th August 2016.

During the release of his acclaimed full-length album ‘Howl’ and heavy touring in late 2015, Ryan came out of a long relationship and found himself making music throughout the winter months. The result of his efforts is a 34-minute, 6-track mini album ‘Night Melody’, born out of and shaped by long hours working into the night. It’s nocturnal in sound; mysterious in the way that the early hours so often are.

“I found myself, in a silent home, with the days getting dark very early. I’ve never before in my life been affected by the lack of light so much. I just remember it always being night time. I would either make music into the night, go out drinking with friends, or go to parties and dance into the early hours, every day, week after week, month after month, until eventually the days became brighter again.”

The opening statement ‘Pattern of the North’ starts off with a collage of spliced synth melodies, inspired by anxiety that accompanies going home for Christmas. It’s followed by ‘Johannesburg’, an early sketch gradually filled out during his tour in South Africa. 

“After playing it around some of the cities, I got a lot of inspiration to bring it to life and push it into something that really moves me. I think this is one of my most colourful pieces of music, with its driving rhythm and almost a homage to Terry Riley’s ‘In C’ towards the end, with a build of very simple, hypnotic parts. I especially love that for over five minutes the piece is tied to just one note. This makes the ending very dramatic, because all of a sudden there is this harmonic change.”

‘Lone’ started life around the time Ryan was working on his ‘Sonne’ EP in 2014. It’s the result of constant adjustments to find the perfect balance of fragility and assurance. As everything on the album, it’s a carefully considered, emotionally mature piece. “I think, as I get older, I need music to represent something and not just sound interesting, though of course the two are connected.”

The closing statement ‘What Sorrow’ is a fitting end to the album, building from gentle melancholia to a joyous crescendo. It’s a sensibility that’s central to the record; joy and sorrow both find their counterpoints.

“This record is very personal to me and I hope it offers something for other people, as it helped me to make it and to listen to it. Almost every synth line was recorded intuitively, without perfection but with a lot of intention and expression. I’m not interested in making something sad or making something happy. I want music to be bittersweet, to be more complex, like life – containing moments of vibrant colour and hope, as much as darkness and sadness.”

This summer will see Ryan follow on from his recent North American Tour with the appearance at many festivals including Lovebox, Secret Garden Party, La Route Du Rock, Sea Change and Tale of Us-curated Afterlife party at Space, Ibiza. ‘Night Melody’ will be available on 12” vinyl and digitally, August 5th.
