It takes guts to proclaim that you’re going to establish something completely new with your latest track, but New York rapper Danny Matos definitely backs up his boasts on “New Genre,” the lead single off his forthcoming project, 'The Hangar EP.'

The thing about Matos and “New Genre” isn’t that he’s trying anything ridiculous or over the top to grab the listener’s attention. Rather, dude’s just “being honest” (aka the name of his new genre) and exposing his soul on the record, something we don’t necessarily hear too often in Hip-Hop today. 

Sure, some artists put on and pretend to be lyrically revealing, but when can you hear it in their voice? Or even in their rhymes? For Matos, you hear it in both. His passion is particularly evident in his voice, which nearly cracks over the song’s slick production handled by Rusty Mack and multi-instrumentalist the Red Walrus (both of Harry Fraud’s Surf School).

In a time when New York’s lyrical dynasty has become a ghost of its former self, Danny Matos is here to prove that the East Coast still has something to say. Although he’s still fresh on the scene, his dream has been in the works for over a decade, some of which has been spent as a spoken word poet. Given his knack for lyricism, it’s no surprise that Matos has roots in poetry. In the past few years alone, he’s taken home awards for his pen game across NYC. However, he doesn’t rely on his background to influence his delivery. Instead, Matos flows on the mic like he’s been rapping for years.

And that’s apparent throughout 'The Hangar EP,' which finds Matos showcasing both his talents and his personal growth. “I’m being open and holding a mirror to myself with this project,” says the New York City artist.“ In keeping with that theme, Matos made a conscious decision to keep the tracklist void of any features. Besides a brief hook on “F*ck My Head Up,” which explores relationships from a lovelorn perspective, 'The Hangar EP' is 100% Matos.

The seven-track effort is produced entirely by Rusty Mack, with additional instrumentation provided by the Red Walrus (both affiliates of Harry Fraud’s Surf School label). Matos explains that they all spent “every Sunday for almost a year” together to craft the project. “I was right there with them as they produced each track,” he adds. Their musical relationship shines through immediately on energetic opener “New Genre,” a bass-heavy cut in which Matos rips into Hip-Hop (and music in general) with the viewpoint that, today, “being honest” deserves its own genre.

'The Hangar EP' encapsulates many of Danny’s more pivotal life experiences, without sparing any of the emotional aftermath. “I want the listener to see the underlying themes of someone who is vulnerable from the beginning,” he says. “I don’t want to hide it first and tell you later.” He stays true to his word on highlights such as “Let Go,” where he offers a glimpse into his struggles with self-awareness and attachment, and “F*ck My Head Up,” which explores relationships through a lovelorn perspective.

Elsewhere, Matos returns to his roots on “Mixed Priorities (Hearsay),” a cut that acts as a hybrid that connects Matos’ fluid, unrestricted poetry with a focused series of bars. Hangar’s final two tracks “Here Now” and the intense closer, “On Fire,” further prove that Danny has no plans on stopping soon.

After garnering serious attention earlier this year with 'The Hangar EP,' New York artist Danny Matos continues hustling with the release of a brand-new single, “Cope.”

Just as we heard on the EP, the track features the poet-turned-rapper once again working with his go-to musical collaborators—Surf School’s Rusty Mack and instrumentalist the Red Walrus. Their lush, live aesthetic adds richness to “Cope” and provides more emotional weight to Matos’ verses, which center on learning to live with mistakes (both his own, and those of others). 

His admission of not being able to cope sometimes, as noted on the track’s melodic hook, is just another shining example of what makes Matos’ music so poignant. While he can absolutely paint a lyrical picture—and does throughout his verses—he also knows when to drive his point home more simplistically. And that notion is particularly clear in the closing sample of a man speaking on how “the truth will set you free.” You just have to go out and find it.

Failed relationships have long provided ample inspiration for artists of all types who have often used heartbreak as a muse for some of their finest work. At least, that much is evident on “You Ain’t Better,” a biting new single from the rising NYC talent, Danny Matos.

Whereas previous single “Cope” had a more introspective vibe to it, “You Ain’t Better” finds the artist at his most frustrated and annoyed. Those feelings simmer brightly beneath the surface of the track, which avoids being trapped in “angst-rap” territory thanks to the bright, dubby vocals and production. The latter is handled by frequent collaborator Rusty Mack, of Surf School, and instrumentalist the Red Walrus.

Together, they’ve crafted a catchy kiss-off anthem for anyone who realizes their love addiction is “bad for me, like nicotine.” If nothing else, hopefully Matos can help others going through similar romantic struggles and that, sometimes, you’re better off being alone.

Whether peering inside himself or at our society, New Yorker Danny Matos has a sharp and unique perspective that ultimately aims to help the greater-good. That much is evident on “Stay Together (Anima),” a searing takedown of the expectations placed on men, and relationships.

Known for his brimming pen game, Matos uses his gift to tackle troubled relationships torn apart by outside forces including the intensity of one’s career goals, and the desire to seek out others. It doesn’t have to be that way, though, and guest vocalist Joie Giordano (she’s also on lead single “Fought The Devil”) drives that point home throughout the track. In addition to slaying the hook, she closes the song with a heartfelt message: “If only we made an effort/ To make an effort/ To stay together.”

You can hear the pain and anguish in Giordano and Matos’ vocals here, providing even more weight to an already-heavy subject. That being said, their songwriting is strong enough that nothing feels plodding or overwrought, only honest. The multitalented NYC-based Danny Matos provides a new perspective on the heartbreak anthem with his latest single, “Movin’ On,” by dissecting and discovering the actual root of his pain.

While most songs about lost love will place the blame solely on the other half, Danny’s approach goes way deeper than that. Rather than simply throw a middlefinger at his ex and call it a day, the the burgeoning artist looks inside himself and realizes that it’s his own sense of nostalgia and personal investment in the relationship that caused all the pain.

“‘Movin’ On’ is a tale of someone who feels that they’ve given so much, they don’t know if they’ll be able to actually get over this person,” Danny explains. “In those cases, you don’t realize that it’s not THEM you’re fearful of not getting over; it’s the investment you put forward and the person your mind created them to be.”

It’s a mature and refreshing take on a topic that, in lesser hands, typically treads all-too-familiar territory. And for Danny, it’s more than just an opportunity to unleash his inner demons, because he also gets to showcase his unique and wholly original perspective on life.

In his incredibly gripping new video for “Oasis,” New York artist Danny Matos shares a powerful and personal look into the way we as a society obsess over so many things beyond our control. While it may seem bleak at first, there’s hope to be found in our own oasis—and Matos wants to help his listeners get there.

“The song is about me ridding myself of all these things, and finding that place of ‘Oasis,’” Matos explains. “The songs on the album after ‘Oasis’ find me in a place of self-discovery where I am beginning to shed everything that was taught to me.”

Those sentiments come to life in these visuals directed by MRKQJ, who pulls together footage of different versions of Matos. In one shot, he’s blindfolded and unable to see the realities of the world. In others, he’s wearing the classic shirt and tie outfit that he says “society attributes to real manhood.” The catch, though, is that he’s surrounded by metaphorical imagery of how we bring ourselves down—clocks, weight scales, calendars…

“Oasis” is a thoughtful and evocative video that will make viewers question the way they perceive their own lives. It’s also just a really solid single off Matos’s latest project, 'Caged Are The Songs That Set Me Free, 'which is produced entirely by the superbly talented Rusty Mack.
