Well – here he is again in the company of a host of other Ukrainian producers on this free, nine-deep collection the Odessa Beats Session. It’s a compilation which stylistically encompasses everything from b-boy breaks, to footwork but the main flavour is a very 90s trip-hoppy one. Indeed, the likes of Smuff Tha Quiz’s Springfield could be a lost DJ Krush track off Strictly Turntablized while Purgatory Of Souls’ Vibe Town might have been an early Nightmares On Wax cut. The Ukrainian beatmaker from Odessa Purgatory Of Souls calls himself as the "Unknown Beatmaker from Underground", defines his music style as "abstract boom bap". He is inspired by music works of The Alchemist, Lord Finesse, Pete Rock, J Dilla, MF DOOM, Oh No, Madlib, DJ Premier.

"You can tell it’s January because it doesn’t seem like anyone can bear to release anything that isn’t trip-hop. Mind you – when seems like it’s night for most for the day and you feel like you’ve got S.A.D. even when you haven’t, you can see the attraction of slo-mo beats redolent with vinyl crackle. It’s basically because trip-hop is the musical equivalent of a duvet – and this month seems to be a vintage one for hip-hop’s sleepy cousin as Ukrainian beatmaker, Purgatory Of Souls, gets all Mo Wax on your ass with his Tripmatic EP, furthering the early Nightmares On Wax vibe suggested by, er, Vibe Town on the recent Odessa Beats Session comp. and adding more than a dash of early DJ Krush.
