Hello friends ! Today we share the fantastic 65th episode of the Series by Paul2B.

Paul2B started to get into mixing as a teenager.
Over the years, his music has evolved through many genres like Trance, Micro, Deep House, and Techno...
Percussion, groovy basslines and organic textures are the main ingredients of his sets. During the pandemic, music played an important role in mental health. Taking a particular interest in nature, he got more and more into ambient music. He has released mixtapes for techno labels / channels like Lowless, Anodynic Frequencies, and also contributed to a VA for N F E R E E's label.

Khotin has been a key figure in the developing Electronic music scene emerging from Canada - for over ten years he has been producing and releasing music.

His sound has evolved exponentially, weaving between sounds and styles with cohesive ease of which others might only dream of. His records have found a home somewhere between the heady 90's ambient and trip hop era, deep house and has drawn upon abstract influences from balearic roots, trance and a whirlwind of other other cultural guises.

All of this makes his music remarkably interesting and hard to pin down.

His forthcoming album "Release Spirit" is forthcoming on acclaimed label Ghostly International. It features a collection of ambient soundscapes, tape recordings and off piste samples as Khotin draws inspiration from far reaching influences such as World of Warcraft, train journeys through Europe and Japan, family vacations and beyond.

We asked Khotin to record a mix which reflects a similar nature of the new album - the result is a delicate assortment of textures which lend themselves to a brooding optimism for the year ahead. At least we hope..

Khotin: The Ransom Note Mix

This hybrid DJ / Live Set was recorded in a yurt structure at the Freerotation Festival in Wales. This time my idea for the set was to take us all much further out, much deeper inside than the set from last year. A more disembodied experience. 

As I had done last year, I sat on the floor in front of the speakers to perform instead of behind them as a DJ normally does. This greatly enhanced my feeling of experiencing the set with the audience, dissolving the usual performer / audience divide. 
Below is the list of tracks that I played in addition to live improvisation using a eurorack modular system.

Mix #30 comes from young London producer Doppelate. Although we're huge fans of drums and percussions here at GGHQ we have to agree with him that sometimes it's nice to sometimes float off the rhythmic grid and bathe in some lighter, ambient textures.

Awareness XXII: Ben Buitendijk

Since 2014, UK-based label, https://soundcloud.com/astralindustries have been responsible for some of the most enlightening and entertaining releases of recent years. Their output has helped otherwise forgotten or out of print music see the light of day, provided new takes on previous classics, whilst also pushing forward new music by some of the most well-respected artists within the ambient genre. 

Debuting with a release by dub-techno legend DeepChord in 2014, Astral Industries went on to release Wolfgang Voigt's live project, Rückverzauberung Live In London in 2015.  In 2016 they followed with a 1985 recording from disbanded dutch collective Chi - a timeless and undoubtedly classic record, whilst in the same year pitching Wolfgang and Deepchord together for the very first time, with reinterpretations of Peter Michael Hamel's classic, Colors of Time. By then, and combined with the continually brilliant artwork of Theo Ellsworth, we knew that Astral Industries was a label with staying-power, and a growing catalog of releases worth collecting - be it just for the framed artwork, or moreover, the complete music package. 

In 2017, we've seen an LP by Heavenly Music Corporation, aka Kim Cascone (likely encouraged by the recent re-release of his own label Silent Records), a third LP by The Chi Factory, and then just last month a beautiful album by Waveform Transmission (Rod Modell of DeepChord and Chris Troy), with a sublime follow-up album, a massive 20 years after their first. 

The man behind the Astral Industries machine, Ario is a proven expert at plucking obscure gems from the past, or ensuring that good music gets the platform and artistic presentation it deserves. In just a few years, Ario has curated a highly respected and anticipated label roster that demands attention, and has yet to disappoint. The music is always gentle, deep and often extremely vivid, be it deeply hypnotic ambient, or gentle murmurs of dub-techno. 

With curatorial talents like this, we're overjoyed to host an exclusive 2hr+ mix of Ario digging into his record collection, and interlocking a few select exclusive Astral Industries bits in-between. It's one hell-of-a hypnotic journey and just like the Astral Industries releases, deserved of your full undivided, escapist attention.

There are a bunch of nights in my career that will stay in my memory forever, and one of them is definitely the No Way Back (unannounced) experimental/ambient DJ set i was invited to play in the Outer Space room on the 27th of May 2018 when I came to Detroit to also play for Movement.

I had previously heard from plenty of people in the game that No Way Back was a very very special night and i was therefore full of expectations… well I can easily say that it went quite a bit beyond them… and I’ve been around in clubs and raves a lot as i’m (unfortunately) no spring chicken anymore...

No Way Back truly has an energy and a magic that is hard to describe unless you experience it… it has something that is viscerally rooted to Detroit and to what this city means for this music and this culture that we all love so much. There is a love and a commitment for this party coming both from the artists, the crowd and the organizers that is very unique, powerful and deep. 

I feel very lucky and honored to have had the chance to give my contribution as an artist to this special night and i’m therefore very pleased to share the recording of my set with you.

"This mix, though unintended, seems to me to reflect the changing season that is upon us.  Shorter days, more night, grey skies and cool temperatures (for the most part) here in New York.  
I don't know why but the vibe/feel of the UK electronic music i really like resonates that vibe to me.  
So this mix starts in a ambient/spacey/dubby zone moves into some drums and then backs out in dubbed out fashion.  Peace."
