Under a Glass Bell

When composing Mass of the Eternal Flame, my first Mass, I kept remembering my parish choir in Latvia, which I directed for ten years. Whatever songs of praise and worship, repentance or thanksgiving we sang, the vivid experience and understanding of the text by each singer was always prominent. In this way, my Mass was born. It is inspiring for me to know that in Houston, Texas there is also a choir with faith in God in their hearts and a true passion for expressing the Good News through music, as well as conductor Robert Simpson and organist, Daryl Robinson, whose musicianship has inspired many over the years. My sincere gratitude to them for encouraging me to write my first Mass!

Mass of the Eternal Flame: New Music by Ēriks Ešenvalds & Rachel Laurin

For all the reasons that you should already know, and if not, then for the ones that will become apparent shortly, these words are extremely difficult for me to write. So, let’s get the challenging part out of the way now. Marcus Fjellström was a remarkable Swedish composer who has been an influence and a dear friend. I’ve met him on several occasions and was immediately embraced by his radiating bright energy, which seemed to be at odds with the dim music he composed. His audiovisual works left a permanent impression on my heart and mind, the most notable of which was his private performance for the Miasmah family in Berlin, on which he released Schattenspiele (2010) and Skelektikon (2017). He even made a gorgeous mix for me, which I listen to only when I miss him the most. So when, in September of 2017, Erik Skodvin brought me the terrible news of his untimely death (at an incredibly young age of only 37!), I was absolutely devastated. It’s been nearly impossible to listen to his music ever since. That, and of course, watching the AMC series called The Terror, for which Marcus composed the soundtrack at the end of his life. That is until today. On September 20th, Miasmah will release a posthumous double album of this final work, befittingly titled The Last Sunset Of The Year, collecting music originally composed for the above-mentioned show, with many pieces being available for the very first time. I’m absolutely honoured to be selected to premiere a track, with the official announcement coming out tomorrow.

Sometimes I wake up in a different bed, in a different city, at a different time. Everything around me is new and there is excitement about all the possibilities. But there’s also a bit of anxiety and maybe even dread. My anchor is gone, and I am drifting with the current, afloat among the unfamiliar waters. This is when I turn back towards music. Music that makes me feel like I am safe, serene and cosy. Music that I often call my home. This is precisely what I hear in the soft piano keys of the Norwegian pianist and composer Øystein Skar, who has announced his upcoming debut album, titled Hem. I may not know him as a person, and yet his playing makes me calm. I may not truly know his story, and yet his story’s somehow mine. And while I navigate the stormy weather, this ray of sunshine points the way. In these turbulent and truly anxious times, I turn back towards home. I turn back towards music.

Composed during winter’s embrace in his woodland home outside Oslo (I imagine a hushed sanctuary of a snow-draped retreat), the piece embodies the album’s central theme of homecoming – not merely to a physical place, but to essential truths long carried within. In its patient build and emotional resolution, “Levva” invites listeners into the intimate geography of Skar’s personal mindspace. The piece stands as testimony to what becomes possible when an artist, after years of outward exploration, turns the compass needle toward the territories of the heart.

"Levva, meaning “to live well,” is a longer, more experimental track blending classical, improvisational, and electronic music. Anchored by a synth arpeggiation and a piano melody, the piece has two parts with the second evolving into an expansive, percussive, and dreamy landscape created with an array of synths. Stillness in Bloom

Fluid Audio announces 'Series Of Room', the quietly moving new release from Italian composer Grotta Veterano. Mastered by Ian Hawgood and featuring cover artwork by Danish artist Øjerum, the album offers a deeply introspective journey through sound, memory, and emotional architecture.

Initially recorded as a series of private piano sketches - “written improvisations, controlled sketches” - the tracks were never intended as a cohesive album. Yet when brought together, they began to resemble something whole: a constellation of internal spaces, unresolved and beautifully unrefined.

“They ended up becoming a series of rooms,” writes Grotta Veterano, “each one made of memory, of recurring fragments from the past, reconstructed over time. When I say ‘a series of rooms,’ I mean the ones we carry inside us, not physical spaces.”

Each piece unfolds like an overheard thought, a door left ajar. There’s no grand statement here-only presence, absence, and the trace of something lived. With its unadorned fragility and its refusal to over-explain, Series Of Room speaks in the language of quiet honesty.

The album is presented in a meticulously handcrafted edition of 50 copies, drawing from the same tradition of tactile collage and analogue storytelling that has defined recent Fluid Audio editions. Each set features original Ordnance Survey map segments, cloth-backed and carefully bound, forming a unique shell for each copy. Also included are custom-designed A6 prints on heavyweight uncoated stock, vintage photographic slides, black & white travel photographs, photo negatives, and salvaged book pages from. Fragments of reel-to-reel field recording tape, antique travel stubs, and ephemera gathered from forgotten drawers complete the assembly.

All elements are housed in a hand-waxed, stamped, scented archival bag, individually numbered. No two packages are alike. No repress.
