Drum and bass_R.D.P.

This is a concept mix. Drum and Bass music is characterised by an up tempo rythym (Usually between 165 and 185 beats per minute. It places heavy emphasis on the drum beat and bass lines. I wanted to throw down a "Dark" mix for the most part but I like all sub genres of DnB, and I like how they sound together in the same mix. I think mixes that have all of the same types of sounds in them can get sort of lame, so I like to spice it up a little and catch people off guard. This mix is predominantly Neurofunk and Tech Step, but there are other tunes in there. Some might call one of the tunes a "Liquid" track, or others might call another track in here "Jump Up". In the end it is ALL Drum and Bass, and I hooked this set up for the shear love of the music. This describes my style so to speak. I hope you enjoy my sense of experimentation and I hope that this mix does not offend anyone. Afterall, it was only intended to broaden ones listening horizons. If you like this mix feel free to share it, and give me some feedback. Enter the concept.

Skankandbass is dedicated towards the official promotion of record labels and artists in the world of drum & bass music. Since inception in 2010, Skankandbass has unearthed some of the freshest talents in the scene and has opened many doors for unsigned artists. Now, six years in to the game, Skankandbass decides to take on the role of a record label to put together a series of free download singles which aims to further help spread the work of the best unsigned, newcomer artists who deserve more recognition. 

SNB007 comes from newcomers Motional, a Sheffield based production duo. They have had successful releases on various labels, including C-Recordings and Diskool Records.  The duo consists of John Waldron and Freddie Greatrex, both of whom have diverse musical backgrounds, having played instruments from an early age. After meeting at university, Freddie introduced John to the sound of Drum & Bass, which quickly led to the formation of Motional. Freddie has been an established DJ since 2013, regularly playing popular dance events across Sheffield. More recently, this has allowed the duo to demo their latest music at some of the city’s biggest electronic music events and venues, including Hospitality, Valve Sound System, and The Tuesday Club. Initially focused on the lighter side of Drum & Bass, the duo are determined to develop a more experimental, bass oriented sound, whilst maintaining the rich, melodic content that lies at the heart of their productions. Proving yet again that Program pedestals versatility and musicianship, the imprint returns with another record which shows it’s here to stay. Featuring the renowned tastemaker Crissy Criss, who has premiered some of the bigger drum & bass anthems across the radio airwaves, as well as budding newcomer Malux and Brighton Maestro Erb & Dub, these fresh cuts feature three artists that demonstrate a winning combination.

Up first is the dirtier dancefloor slayer ‘Blizzard’. Epitomising the darker sounds these three bring together, it’s a techy slice of distorted bassline and snappy stabs which roll you deeper into its directly thick composition. Peddled on kick drum with tinny percussion filtering through the mix, prepare yourself to be drawn into the murkier depths of dancefloor’s globally. Switching up midway, the trio take you to a depth they master ingeniously.

You’re then introduced to the brooding, rolling number ‘Wonky’. Described perfectly within its own name, this lumbering yet dynamic track provides a switch up in any set. Setting out on a funky undercurrent, its falling arpeggios and bouncing subs take you across a production line of carefully crafted beats. Fiercely different from its predecessor, you’re provided with a glimpse of the producers’ capabilities. A set of skills sure to see them appear on your playlists this summer.

So once again, it’s time to get with the Program… a label front lining the genre’s shadier side.
