Octo Pi delivers his take on the Intrigue sound with the 'Conversations EP'. Inspired by a trip to New Zealand with his wife, Lady Tate, the track titles represent the journey from North to South Island.

The title track 'Conversations' is a collaboration with label boss Ben Soundscape, taking its name from a meeting of minds upon their return to the UK, where they were able to share plans for both travel and musical adventures.

The artwork is a shot Octo Pi captured of Milford Sound whilst on his travels, a glacial fiord in the southwest of South Island, perfectly embodying the spirit of this release.

A complex and delicately textured EP with layered live effects and guitar straight from Octo Pi's Fender Telecaster, this EP is a testament to the musicality of this talented producer.

I remember the first time I heard drum and bass. I had wandered downstairs from the main dance floor into the basement dnb room where the only light was the tiny desk lamp that the dj was using to see his mixer. Quite a contrast from the glitsy high-tech laser show from upstairs. It was dark, grimy, humid and filled to the brim with people crowding around the dj as every one lost their minds to the music. It was awesome.

So... I wanted to make a song that reminded me of that.

Esteemed Russian D+B producers Bop x Subwave are back with the second release under their new collaborative project. The four-track ‘Dream On’ EP is a perfect encapsulation of the pair’s style, seamlessly infusing their sounds to create a unique and refreshing project whereby the duo have once again tested the boundaries of D+B moving into the realms of garage and lo-fi jungle.

Kicking off the EP is ‘Higher Dimension’, a synthwave-infused D+B number with a dark twist. Dreamlike vocals drenched in reverb combined with nostalgic synths and an unforgiving bassline set the listener up for what’s to come. The minimal yet soulful ‘Escape From U’ follows, bringing crisp percussion and melancholic vibes to this sublime stepper.

‘Lo-Fi Romance’ leads the way for the second half of the EP. Airy pads and bare-bone breaks lay the foundations for this simple yet sophisticated liquid roller. Switching up the vibe yet staying true to the distinct Bop x Subwave sound, ‘Haze’ rounds off the EP, taking things down to 130BPM territory. A clear homage to the sounds of the UK underground with garage-influenced drums and a hard hitting sub.

After the success of their debut EP ‘Love & Other Drugs’ including a number 1 track in the Beatport Garage chart, appraisal from key electronic music publications such as DJ Mag and Resident Advisor as well as radio support across BBC Radio 1, Rinse FM and Reprezent, it’s set to be a huge year for the duo project.

Bop x Subwave - Higher Dimension

Our fantastical Finnish duo that is of course Askel & Elere, or Juho Kavasto and Sainey Gibba, return with a flourish in the form of the 4-track ‘Glass’ EP. While the pair have been busy both individually and collectively, netting releases on Hospital, Fokuz and Delta9, we warmly welcome them back to Soulvent. Reprising 2019’s ‘Yeah Alright’ EP - the pair continue to evolve their slick and sophisticated sound, with this EP another clear indicator of the undoubtedly bright future ahead of them.

The title track ‘Glass’ is calm and inviting; the soft pads welcome low-passed drums and a firm hi-hat. The detuned climax is a luscious roller, providing a window into what is to come. 

‘Envelop’ splashes open with screeching synths and digital noise. This thunderingly quiet build belches forth nothing short of a bowel-churning burst of driving low end and smooth vocal cuts, perfect for decimating any dance floor in your local vicinity. 

The ever so interestingly dubbed ‘Groke’ chirrups to life with it’s gnarled topline sounding like a warped pizzicato string section. Warming rhodes, brisk breaks and a fluid sub bass frame this experimental number with both style and grace. 

Rounding things off, ‘Twice’ is so nice they named it once, but you will need at least two listens to appreciate the mastery at work. Syncopated synths and misshapen, reversed vocals meet rumbling bass and collide amongst breaks caked in white noise.

Smashing into all good stores on the 4th of September, don’t miss this shatteringly smooth release from the hotly tipped pair that is Askel & Elere.
