Eaux and ATP Recordings have partnered with Dr Stéphane Pigeon to create a binaural remix of the track, Head, released from their new album, Plastics. This particular brainwave entrainment sequence has been designed by Dr Pigeon to invoke heightened feelings of happiness and in many cases euphoria.

The only way to get the effect of the binaural remix is to download the track and play it through your headphones. Listening to it in any other way such as on speakers will not give you the same effect. (click here for an explanation why)

In order to achieve the correct outcome sit or stand comfortably, press play, shut your eyes and take three deep long breaths in through your nose and out through your mouth whilst the track starts. Continuing relaxing and breathing naturally for the first two and a half minutes giving time for your brain to follow the frequency and synchronize with the programmed beats. After about 2:30 feel free to open your eyes, dance or just let the feelings of euphoria wash over you.


* Explanation Why *

The reason you have to wear headphones is that two different binaural tones are played with different frequencies on the left and right side. The difference matches the brainwave frequency you are targeting. The human brain processes these binaural tones and perceives them as a subtle periodic beat, not audible as a “sound wave” but as a modulation of the carrier frequency. The carrier starts to modulate at the frequency equal to the difference and your brain creates this modulation in the case of the two frequencies, one in each ear.

This beat is indirectly perceived as opposed to directly heard since it is below the range of human hearing (Perceived human hearing is limited to the range of frequencies from 20 Hz to 20,000 Hz, whereas human brainwave frequencies typically range from .5 to 40 Hz). For each brainwave sequence the frequency of this perceived beat has been engineered to precisely match a target brainwave frequency. The effect on the brainwaves depends on the difference in frequencies of each tone: for example, if 300 Hz was played in one ear and 310 in the other, then the binaural beat would have a frequency of 10 Hz.

After a few minutes of use the listener's own brainwaves will begin to fall into step with, and synchronize with, this binaural beat, inducing states ranging from deep sleep to intense concentration and focus. This synchronization process, also known as the "frequency following response", is referred to as brainwave entrainment. This perceived beat frequency corresponds to the delta, theta, alpha, beta, or gamma range of brainwave frequencies used in the different stages of each brainwave program to entrain the users brainwaves towards the beat frequency. 

The underlying physiology of how the brain is able to process and discern the frequency difference between the left and right ear, or why the brain even attempts to process sounds at this level to begin with, is believed to originate in the superior olivary nucleus, a part of the brain stem, and are related to the brain's ability to locate the sources of sounds in three dimensions and to track moving sounds, which also involves inferior colliculus (IC) neurons.
