I wrote this song reflecting on my role as a white male in America, in a time where we are constantly exposed to the harsh reality of systemic racism and the injustice minorities and specifically the black community experience every single day.
It happens far too often that we all wake up to yet another video of an innocent black male shot wrongfully by the police. I see these images and my blood boils with rage. The pain and sadness within turns to anger, and as I stare down at my skin, I can't help but feel ashamed. 
It saddens me so much, that to avoid falling deeper into depression I distract myself with something that will make me happy, something that will help me cope with the pain I feel from witnessing such horror. 
And here lies the big difference between my situation and that of any black person in America. They can't "turn off" their skin color and just escape the sadness and pain. They have to live and fight through oppression, racism, bigotry and hatred on a daily basis. I try to share their pain and empathize, but because I don't experience it myself, it's hard for me to fully understand and relate.
It would be far easier and less painful to just go through life aspiring to be happy all the time and trying to live care free. Especially when struggling with depression, the last thing you want is something that will make you even sadder. But I'm not looking the other way anymore. I'm tired of seeing my brothers and sisters being killed, lynched, mistreated, not given the same opportunities, being rejected from jobs, not receiving loans to start businesses, and so much more, all because they're black and live in a system designed for the success of white people. I'm going to continue to fight for justice, peace and equality for all, no matter what. 
We have the power to make a change, and the time is now.
