a. My name is Ian Baxter and I produce music as DJ Birdbath and am currently based in the sunny top of New Zealand's south island.

q. is there a story behind the mix?
Not as such, I just tried to go with my first impulse for the song choice.

q. what's the best way to enjoy your mix?
I reckon it's best enjoyed in a comfy place with some headphones maybe on a bus or train.

q. describe a favorite object in your living room...
Definitely the pile of comfy pillows a friend made covers for from an old wall hanging. I've been making lots of music and this mix whilst nestled amongst them.

q. are you working on any projects right now (music or not music)?
I'm always working on bits of music and samples and am very excited for my EP to come out on APPX: ( @appendixfiles ) on the 24th of March.

M. Geddes Gengras has inhabited the Los Angeles experimental music scene for the last 7 years, bouncing through various bands, monikers, and a critically acclaimed collaboration with Sun Araw and The Congos. The producer perhaps shines most brightly, however, when left to his own bespoke devices. His solo work is largely based in modular synthesis, comfortably straddling a variety of forms while remaining rooted in a deep affinity for the limitations of analog electronics and a keen ear for timbral manipulation.


Ishi finds the producer diving headlong into beautiful, sprawling ambient explorations and deep, mystical drone. Its title is the name given to “the last wild Indian” in North America, who emerged in 1911 at the age of 49. Hidden all his life in the wilderness of northern California, Ishi spent most of his life completely unexposed to the modern world lurking just beyond his own timeless reality. His only exposure to the “civilized” world came from Gold Rush settlers, whom he watched massacre and disease each and every member of his family and tribe, until he alone remained. When he was found, communication between the miraculous survivor and this strange new world was understandably difficult and frightening— but the knowledge gained through the process proved invaluable.


Sometimes the most effective and direct means of communication and understanding exist outside of human language. Gengras’ highly expressive instrumental record reveals itself via sweeping tonal gestures and striking, intensely colorful washes of heavily processed electronic sound. “Ambient” is insufficient to describe the uniquely evocative soundtrack presented here, a lushly nuanced sound world generated directly from the deeply personal relationship between one man and his meticulously cultivated machines.


“The record is about the schism that exists between the world we live in and those stuck on the margins of it— perpetual outsiders and their quest to understand the torrent of information they are constantly subjected to. I was directly inspired to these pieces by two people in my orbit who died this year, one accidentally and one not, both of whom suffered this affliction and eventually lost their lives to it. The music was a reaction to these losses and a sort of offering of something peaceful but at the same time respectful of the conflict and dissonance of life, with movement always in the distance. I look at it as music for passage between different realms, conscious & un, this world & another, layers of reality... ISHI is a metaphor for that— the man who walks into our world understanding none of it but forced to live in it regardless. q. pls introduce yourself

a. as Vlady, I work in cybersecurity. In my non-working hours, I perform under aliases ϙue, dj chlorophyll, am co-curating @biorhythmradio, @ickpakyiv, creating bio installations, and recently formed a project «OO0oϙ0O0O00O» with oa. 

As ϙue, I apply multiple psycho-acoustic techniques to embark a listener on an introspective trip, where two of us seek to explore the concept of ego death and delve into the depths of consciousness through deep listening and self-reflection.


q. is there a story behind the mix?

a. For the last 1.5 years, my main pursuit has been presenting contemporary Ukrainian cultural and musical heritage in Europe. This mixtape is a logical continuation of Sasha Very’s https://soundcloud.com/cminuss/sasha-very-present-ukraine. The main motif is Ukrainian artists, who witnessed firsthand the preciousness of life and the woe of death. The major part of sound material gathered here is songs, tracks, and compositions created during the 2022-2023 full-scale invasion.


q. what's the best way to enjoy your mix?

a. Thinking, appreciating, and developing a sense of care about the joy of “simple” things in your life. 

You may not realise how much your like, comment, Bandcamp purchase, an invitation to make an interview, an invitation to your podcast series, or to record a mix can make an immense difference to someone whose survival and “tomorrow” does not come for granted. Here, I mean any Ukrainian who has not crossed the border since February 24, 2022. 

And if this one-hour overview of the musical landscape sparks within you an interest in Ukrainian underground scene, my goal is accomplished.


q. describe a favorite object in your living room...

a. For the last three months, I had to move places five times, so my living room was always shifting :] 

But I always have my 12-centimeter glass sphere with me. Being an optical filter, it serves as a reminder about the delusional nature of our perception and that experiences are limited — words, visions, smells, touch. Hence, I believe one can only trust their mental images (the language we think and dream in). Which I find funny how easily we, myself included, forget about this basic nature of things. So I carry this physical reminder with me.


q. are you working on any projects right now (music or not music)? 

a. There are some. 

A few weeks ago, after a gentle push from our mutual dear friend Frog of Earth, oa and me formed a sound-art duo «ОО0оϙ0О0О00О». Olenka is a muse to me in mysterious ways which I am yet to understand. We are working on songs, remixes and a body-music performance where our brainwaves and body electricity are processed through synths.  

Earlier in June, there was a debut of the OFF-ICKPA stage in Arkaoda Berlin where I played with other Kiiberboreans (s/o to @ecology141): super inter, TIBSLC, and Andriy Kostyukov — coincidentally, the latter two also have released LR mixes (both are strongly recommended to listen next). I worked a lot on this one and planning the next year’s festival edition. 

And since mid-2022, Kharkiv’s @comechelet and I are working on a collab release by exchanging stems via the web. So far, our first finished work has traveled some internet sites — Noods, HÖR, and 3XL. These days, as I am writing answers to this mini-interview, Comechelet is shooting a music video in southern France for our second single.

Field Records takes a look into the vast catalogue of Celer, the prolific ambient project from Tokyo-based American artist Will Long. Perfectly Beneath Us was originally released in 2012 as a CD-R on Still*Sleep, and now it’s being presented as a vinyl release, remastered by Stephan Mathieu.

Celer began in California in 2005 as a collaborative project between Will Long and Danielle Baquet, resulting in reams of self-released work up until Baquet passed away in 2009. Long opted to keep their project going, and Celer has continued to grow as an expansive exploration of purest ambient. Meanwhile Long’s solo work as Celer and under his own name has been equally accomplished, with scores of releases on labels such as DJ Sprinkles’ Comatonse Recordings, and respected Norwegian leftfield label Smalltown Supersound.

With such a sizeable library of sounds to explore, the reissue of Perfectly Beneath Us serves as an ideal entry point into the middle period of Celer's catalogue, presenting four pieces of sustaining, lethargic movements, wreaked in profound subtlety. Long exercises the utmost resignation from the brief ‘Distressing Sensations’ and ‘Ultra-terrestrial Yearning’ through to the 10-minutes-plus spells of ‘Slightly Apart, Almost Touching’ and ‘Absolute Receptivity Of All The Senses’.

It’s truly hypnotic, captivating music that rewards the attentive listener as much as it soothes the casual drifter. Originally limited to just 100 copies in 2012, it’s now beautifully framed on a carefully considered reissue which adds to Field’s own repertoire of evocative, subliminal electronics.

Part curse, part declaration, part Rorschach test, Varg's new collection of EPs is a barely balanced inferno. Side by side, raw club burners arrive from the wretched plateaus levelled out by chaotic neurotransmissions, while sweet and soft anthems take the pain away.

The first EP, Sky City: Even in the Heart of Heaven, Angels Can Still Feel Fear, affirms Varg's deft and agile take on techno. Here minimalism spars with blissed out programming, unafraid to pepper sedate hooks with intricate percussive rufige. With each track's eyes on the raving kru, Varg restates his permit to take it to the floor. It's foreboding, but it always has been—and Sky City: A Weak Heart to Break (Spit) makes this its method. Launching itself under the opening track's dazzling melancholic sweep, the EP loses its way in every direction at once by the last track's glitching gabber meltdown. Fair warning is required for the demonic and cosmically unhinged piece of rhythmic noise that begins the second side.
