Chants delivers his second album for Astral Plane Recordings in two years. Seven Spheres, released in 2019, marked the culmination of several years of work on dancefloor-intentioned rhythmic forms. Its dense, sound system-specific approach has given way to the improvisational levity of 'Poly Pointillism', due out on February 5.

Built from a series of daily percussion videos the Madison-based artist worked on over the Summer, 'Poly Pointillism' cues into a controlled emotional vernacular that combines zoned listening as much as flexi-BPM DJ play. Familiar rhythms loop into excess, becoming unfamiliar in the process, while a small set of samples and instruments shift between the comfortable and the alien.

Poly Pointillism was written in short bursts, utilizing a deliberately comfortable set of textures, rhythms and palettes. It is a project that emerged from the specific space and time of mid-Summer pandemic lockdown and builds in a claustrophobia and drive to excess that will be familiar to many. It is also specific to Chants’ arc as a musician, following a series of releases that matched his prowess in percussion with a club functionalism. Within both contexts, 'Poly Pointillism' can be understood as a release; from the limitations of dancefloor rigidity and the austerity of pandemic confinement.

Sound as mood altering substance is a well-covered trope in the annals of dance music, but rarely do the genre’s historians look beyond ecstasy when discussing how music effects/affects the mind. Psychotropia is a look at the in-between periods that make up most nights, from the literal come up and come down to countless hours spent in bathroom queues, on public transportation and waiting to fall asleep. Like the states induced by actual psychotropic substances, these instances all seem to coagulate into a singular, semi-lived experience. This compilation, through 10 idiosyncratic takes on modern club music, seeks paint a fittingly blurry picture of this psychotropic environment.

Since turning in an Astral Plane Mix in early 2014, Chants has been a staple in our orbit, contributing a bonus track to our first compilation and going on to feature as our second signing ever. Carious Motion is the Madison resident's third EP for the label, comprised of four tracks that draw on clashing themes of decay and movement. 2016's The Zookeeper and 2017's Amethyst Dust set a template for in-your-face, percussion-focused club formations, but Carious Motion exceeds both in its intricacies, finely attuned samples and self-recorded drum loops that form a superstructure around each track's core ideas. Ballroom god tier MC BE3K features on opener "RED (Off My Chest)" while Crazylegs' Gage provides a remix of the same track. Carious Motion is out digitally on March 16.

Los Angeles’s Maral (@maral66) has spent the past half-decade quietly honing an approach that meshes the latest in club music contortions, a range of pulverized dub effects, and samples from her library of Iranian folk, pop and classical musics. More likely to be found working behind the scenes for local labels and club nights, Maral steps into the spotlight on Mahur Club, highlighting a trans-historical collage technique that emphasizes formal experimentation as much as it does personal history.

Exploring (rhythmic) psychedelia in both concrete and abstract forms, Mahur Club dials in on mashed out versions of Jersey club, reggaeton and dub, nodding to psych rock and trip hop via whirlwind takes on contemporary battle dance genres. Repetition and rapid sample chop are utilized on tracks like “don’t trip on your way down” and “lori lullaby”, pairing familiar dance-floor rhythms with waterlogged Farsi vocals in a sublime vortex of tradition, pop and functionality.

Mahur Club features material from ABE, DJ Abosohar and Loris. The release consists of two separate components; a cassette featuring two mixed portions and a free mixtape of individual tracks. Mastering provided by Will Mitchell, artwork by Maral Mahmoudi and design by Caleb Ali Miller.

Across three EPs for Astral Plane Recordings, Chants has marked a development from relative novice to one of the club music world’s most distinctive voices. August 23 will see the release of Seven Spheres, the Madison-based artist’s first album since 2015 and his most accomplished work to date for the label.

Melding experience working in the New Orleans second line tradition with an acute passion for all forms of rhythmic acceleration, Chants suffuses Seven Spheres with both a coiled, premeditated energy and bursts of spontaneous joy. Largely recorded at home and with friends, the percussion heard throughout the album is imbued with a beguiling tension: improvisational in spirit, but also rigorously gridded out for DJ play.

Meticulously workshopped from the ground up, Seven Spheres grew out of a series of sound design-focused drum tracks that developed into full fledged anthems like “Filament” and “Muzzoline”. Further experiments in speed and sub bass juxtaposition begat “Seven Spheres” and “Assiah Dance”, the spiritual core of the record and two tracks that have been hammered in mixes and radio by us and others.

At eight songs, Seven Spheres is a tight bundle, built out of individual tracks that show a remarkable plasticity in relation to every other track on the album. Having experimented in texture, structure, and tempo, the album is stylistically broad, yet singular in approach: the result of a labor of love and a long-held desire to design dancefloor-functional music. Seven Spheres is out on all digital platforms on August 23.
