Magical Mystery Mix Part 2

In 2020 KRUDER & DORFMEISTER released their long-awaited debut album - 25 years after its creation. "1995" is a little journey back in time to the 90s - the time of Trip Hop and Downtempo sound, which was also influenced by Kruder & Dorfmeister.

For my monthly edition of the broadcast 'Limbo Rhythm' on Radio Z 95.8 Nuremberg I made this mini-mix (aired for the first time in November 2020). Six of my personal favorites from the album "1995", compressed into twenty minutes.

The collaboration of Richard Dorfmeister and Rupert Huber goes back to their childhood. Sharing the same school for over 8 years made them experience and develop a mutual music taste that covers a bright range of music styles.

This taste is not only, but largely based on their common sense of humor, the fact that they learned to make music together and that they share their musical background and taste. They share the feeling that music is a way of expressing personal feelings as well as living personal freedom.

Being confronted and trained in classical european music in their childhood,  their interest later turned to music from other backgrounds, like blues, jazz, experimental and electronic music from all around the world. This history is partly reflected in their influences mix.

Our 25th Anniversary slot this week features Richard Dorfmeister who appeared on the show in 2003 and featured many times as one half of Kruder and Dorfmeister, as well as his project Tosca with Rupert Huber, amongst others. Opening with ECM artist Steve Tibbetts, his mix floats between Gui Boratto, his own lush edit for Selah Sue, acoustic guitar of Jeb Loy Nichols and the dubbed out Rhythm & Sound featuring Cornell Campbell on vocals. He then weaves through Pat Metheney, the dub version of Sunset from Grace Jones' last album, blues from Ry Cooder and ending with a couple of tracks from his recent Tosca album 'Odeon'.

This mix is a short introduction to some old favourites from my ever-swelling African Music archive. This one kicks off with a Libyan disco jam before heading South for a couple of rock tracks. Most notably South Africa for Letta Mbulu, showing off her incredible vocal range on 'Mahlalela', a track produced by the legendary trumpeter and producer Hugh Masakela (R.I.P). From there it's a short stop into some Ghanaian Hi-Life, including Pat Thomas, 'The Golden Voice of Africa' with 'Enye Woa'. Later in the mix there's a bit of exploration into the Nigerian Funk & Disco scene - that era in Lagos was bottomless-pit of heavy dancefloor-fillers and outrageous creativity. A personal favourite is 'Wake Up Your Mind' by Joni Haastrup, a rallying-cry for Black empowerment and a true African Anthem. Happy Listening.

DJ and radio host on Radio Z 95.8 Nuernberg/Germany (Radioshows “Limbo Rhythm” and “Headz”).

As DJ he has performed since 1992 in the Franconian surroundings, however, also in Berlin, Cologne, Munich, Portugal, Switzerland, Austria… Moreover he was booked for events such as the IFA International Radio Exhibition Berlin and the biggest European Youth Fair “YOU”, also in Berlin.
Dr.Best himself considers his roots in the Hip Hop Sound of the early 80’s to the mid 90’s, but he also dealt with other styles such as Funk, Soul, Acid Jazz, Trip Hop, Big Beat, House, Drum & Bass and Breakbeat. Over a couple of years he has been known in the German Clubscene as a Breakbeat-DJ, then in 2006, however, his style started to mutate… Styles such as Funk, Soul, Jazz, Hip Hop, Reggae, Latin, Afrobeat and Disco got mixed with his Breakbeat Sound and created a new mixture which cannot be easily tagged any more.
