She looked up, "I think I'll have some wine. How 'bout you?" she asked, and he declined

"Warren" she said, "Maybe just for tonight
Let's fill the stove with birches and watch as the fire burns bright
How long has it been? I know it's quite a while
Pour yourself half a glass. Stay with me a little while"

But Warren, he shook his head, as if she'd made some kind of joke
"Birches on a winter night? No, we'll fill the stove with oak
Oak will burn as long and hot as a July afternoon
And birch will burn itself out by the rising of the moon”

"And you hate a cold house, same as me. Am I right or not?"
"All right, all right, that's true," she said, "It was just a thought
She said, "Warren, you do look tired. Maybe you should go up to bed
I'll take care of the wood tonight" "Oak" he told her, "Oak" she said

She listened to his footsteps, as he climbed up the stairs
And she pulled a sweater on her, and set her wine glass on a chair
She walked down cellar to the woodbox, it was as cold as an ice chest
Then climbed back up with four logs, each as white as a wedding dress

And she filled the stove and poured the wine, then she sat down on the floor
She curled her legs beneath her as the fire sprang to life once more
And it filled the room with its hungry light and it cracked as it drew air
And the shadows danced a jittery waltz like no one else was there

And she stood up in the heat, she twirled around the room
And the shadows they saw nothing, but a young girl on her honeymoon
And she knew the time it would be short, soon the fire would start to fade
She thought of heat, she thought of time, she called it an even trade

A version of this song that I have been singing for years ... and have no idea where it came from. Any information about it would be welcome!

Here this is a rehearsal recording with Ralph Jordan on guitar and myself on vocal. We were having fun with it, and recorded two endings - a straight "folk" ending and a slightly more experimental jazzy end. Guess which one we preferred!

EDIT: Ten years later, or so, I found the wee small publication "Folk" edition number 1 published in 1962 which I had bought while at university in Wales in the 70s ... and there was the song. Apparently arranged and edited by Frank Purslow and John Pearse. Still on the hunt to find out where it actually came from in the first place!

I specialise in the links between traditional music from a range of European cultures and the music of the Galant era. I have focused on citterns of many periods and sizes, but I also play related instruments such as the Irish bouzouki and the steel-string guitar in a variety of tunings. My work has involved blending the ancient sounds of early music and the intricacies of traditional dance music. I have a deep reverence for the past, a varied repertoire, and as a performer, a relaxed, conversational style that I hope draws listeners in as if they were sitting in my music room.

Although my musical base is firmly in America and Europe, my travels, interests and research have led to an appreciation of many kinds of traditional music. I discovered an affinity with Irish traditional music by first falling in love with the dance music of medieval, renaissance and baroque Europe. My passion for the cittern led me to Fado and the Portuguese guitarra tradition, as well as to the Corsican cetera. I play historical as well as modern citterns, and have recorded several albums of music for the 18th-century cittern, often called the English “guittar”.
