Drunk Drums

Doctor C has always been musically inclined since he was a young child. According to stories from his mother, he has been DJing since age 4. His mother had numerous parties in the 70’s and she would tell him what artist and track to play. He even knew how to set up records on the “stack” turntables. By age 5 he had his first turntable and microphone. He would try to play any instrument that was before him. His father played an important part in his musical upbringing. He encouraged young Doc to play his keyboards, harmonicas, drums and various percussion instruments. On Christmas 1983, Doc’s father bought his first drum machine, the Mattel Synsonic Drums. He would stay up a many late night programming beats until he fell asleep with the beats still bumping in his headphones. In the summer of 1985, young Doc wrote his first original rap. Influenced by Rap pioneer Blowfly, he wrote a tale of his older brother and the hood homies running trains on the neighborhood ho’. The rap was laced with sexually explicit and profane lyrics. The rap was left on the living room table and was discovered by his mother, who then slapped the shit out of him. A few years later, he sold his Atari 5200 to buy his first sampler, a Casio SK-1. After discovering that he could save his money to buy music equipment, he partnered with his older brother DDT, now known as Tony EQ. They pooled their Christmas money together to buy a Roland TR-707 drum machine. Although the young brothers shared equipment, they always worked on their own musical endeavors. By the 8th grade, young Doc started working in studios, producing his own instrumentals at age 14. He would make tapes for the gangsters to bump in the hood. This was also the time he discovered the “pause mix” technique. It was then he called himself Dr. C: The One Man Crew. At age 15, he was starting to make a name for himself in his hometown of Pacoima, California. He co-produced his first song in a professional studio for another artist with another key person in Doc’s musical background, DJ Eazy D aka Master C. It was Eazy D who allowed young Doc access to his Roland TR-808 and Technics 1200 turntables. It was plain to see that his skills were advanced for someone of such a young age. He proved to exceed limitations on the 808, teaching various techniques to other beat makers. He had a brief production stint with a founding member of the West Coast Crew, which was then he met King T and J-Ro from The Alkaholiks. In the late 80’s, Doc’s older brother DDT, along with Zulu King DJ Hazze from KDAY’s MixMasters, co-founded a crew called The L.A. Zoo, which was where DDT was working at the time. Doctor C along with DJ Eazy D were among the crew’s original members. The L.A. Zoo was a collective of DJ’s, MC’s and dancers (breakers, pop lockers, shockers and groovers). In the early 90’s, The L.A. Zoo became very influential around the San Fernando Valley and Los Angeles underground scene. The L.A. Zoo was Doctor C’s proving ground, where he battled MC’s as well as DJ’s from rival crews. Doctor C found himself producing and engineering tracks for several up and coming rap artists. In 1990, following advise from his father, Doctor C decided to be a leader instead of a follower. While still being a loyal member of the L.A. Zoo, Doc formed his own crew, originally called Ghetto Niggas but changed to the Death Squad Cartel. Doc inlisted original L.A. Zoo members DDT and Sonny B aka SB as the first members. DDT soon left the Squad, but Doc recruited his high school homies Shaft X, Crazy Ed, DJ Palau and others. The crew had a passion for firearms as well as for hardcore beats and rhymes. In late 1991, Doc again partnered with his brother to purchase their first professional sampler, which greatly elevated Doc’s pre-production and sound. In 1992, Doc began to experiment with different sounds, music genres and tempos, including slow tempos which until recently have not been popular in Hip-Hop. From the mid-to-late 90’s up to the present, Doctor C continues to create music with his unique, trademark clarity sound. Doc continues to produce music, engineer and DJ for many L.A. based music artists. He also continues to work on his own recordings, which are rare, due to Doc’s many projects, music or otherwise. “I'm mostly into engineering, producing Hip-Hop and remixing tracks. I've worked with J-Ro and E-Swift from The Alkaholiks, Konfident, Sylk E Fine, Keyz, Smoke, Meche Loc, 42nd St., Tony EQ, Zig ESP from Blak Forest and many other underground artists in the Los Angeles area.” ..
