We're kicking November off with a mix from California-born DJ and producer P Relief, who has recorded 60+ minutes of blissful electronics for Theory Therapy 45. 

This mix aims straight at your dopamine receptors; at least for us it does. Ambient pads, breakbeats, dubbed-out drums—it’s such a good example of the range that Parker consistently brings to his sets. It weaves between a bunch of different styles and sub-genres but even with all the twists and turns, the Berlin-based DJ has carefully constructed a coherent vibe and as usual, the selections are absolutely on point. We’ll be listening to this one a lot over the Aussie summer, thanks Parker <3

a: I'm Marty. Sometimes I release music under the name Warm Body, formerly 1/3 of Baby. I co-run a label called Quiet Time with my friend Eli. I'm also an animator by trade.

q. is there a story behind the mix?
a: The mix was made while recovering from jet-lag. So I guess it encompasses that liminal state where you're not totally used to your surroundings and your body still feels like its traveling.

q. what’s the best way to enjoy your mix?
a: Enjoy it however you like. Long plane ride, night drive or just going on a walk.

q. describe a favorite object in your living room...
a: Probably my DJ setup / sound system and records. And the 3 stones on my coffee table.

q. are you working on any projects right now (music or not music)?
a: Working on a few Quiet Time releases, some more mixes. And some music that I might release under WB or a different name. stay tuned.

“For this month’s installment of Belly Music, I will play two full hours of cassette tapes from my collection. I have wanted to do this show since the beginning of Belly Music, and I am super excited that it’s finally happening. This will be the first installment of a cassette tape series I plan to do throughout the year.

The photo on the poster is me, at age 1 or 2, pulling out all of my dad’s cassettes. There was always music in my home growing up because of him. After he passed away when I was 9, he left behind his entire media collection. I was too young then to realize the importance of these objects and ended up trading them in for a Gameboy Advanced so I could play Pokemon. I do regret never getting a chance to explore his collection, but his love for music was certainly imprinted on me, and I have chosen to honor that and build my own collection of objects and sounds during my time on this plane of existence. I have always found great comfort in the hum and wavy distortions of tape fidelity. I love how mechanical it is. Everything about cassettes evokes a very special nostalgia and comfort that I don’t experience through any other musical format or process. Sometimes, when I lay in bed listening to my tapes, I can feel him around me. These objects and sounds are sacred to me, and I can’t wait to share them with you.” - @hotelsmotels

I started listening to ambient music properly during lockdown as a way of trying to heal from heartbreak as well as a coping mechanism to deal with what was going on around the world. I was pulling together playlists of tracks that made my heart sing or weep, to soundtrack my daily walks around the canals of berlin or the quiet residential area where i grew up and ended up moving back to. These playlists were the start of the sounds of healing series and my journey of digging deeper into ambient soundscapes via my refuge worldwide residency. It’s a genre that I probably would say I have the biggest emotional connection to right now, in the way that it has helped me through some really difficult times in the last four years. So it was an honour to bring this to the club space for the first time for playbody 002, a party run by some of my wonderful  friends. Sounds of healing vol. 5 is a glimpse of what I played during that after hours set, in what became one of the most beautiful settings with the lights dimmed, a candlelight by the decks, people curled up with each other on various platforms, kissing, or deep in conversation. It was touching to witness people have the same emotional reaction to the music as me; people coming up and saying how a track or artist had saved their life or that they just wanted to have this personal moment with the music, away from the conversation. It was deeply vulnerable to play some of these tracks to a group of people, some being strangers but it very much aligns with the journey I’ve been on recently. And with this mix, I’m not only sharing that moment with you but I’m bottling up this feeling and keeping it close to me forever.
