The Mystic Way – A Journey Through the Dao

This piano solo is inspired by the profound wisdom of Daoism, capturing the essence of the ineffable and eternal. Originally written with lyrics drawn from ancient philosophy, the melody now speaks through the purity of the piano, conveying the depth of the Dao without the need for words.

Like a coin with only one side, true understanding transcends definitions. The Dao cannot be spoken, nor can it be named—yet it flows through all things, giving rise to existence and shaping the universe. This piece invites the listener into a space of contemplation, where the seen and unseen intertwine, where mystery deepens with every note, and where the path to understanding lies beyond mere perception.

Let this music be your gateway to serenity, an echo of the eternal harmony that connects all things.

The Mystic Way (Piano Solo)

The songs ‘Returning’ and ‘The Cradle’ are from George Winston’s Grammy award winning album ‘Forest’ released in 1994.  Returning has been transposed to the key of G minor as George frequently played this song as the introduction to The Cradle which is also in the key of G minor.

‘Returning’ was written by George Winston and ‘The Cradle’ is George’s arrangement of a song originally written and recorded by jazz organist Larry Young (Khalid Yasim) as a duet for organ and drums on his 1968 album Heaven on Earth.  The song is dedicated to moms everywhere.

I recorded songs on my Nord Stage 2 voicing Spectrasonics Keyscape using a custom patch based on a modified 7’ 6” Yamaha C7 Grand Piano.  This piano was fitted with Renner “Blue Point” hammers with Welckert felt - a special piano hammer felt used during the pre-Cold War “golden age of Steinway”.

Here comes a shortened version of my brand new improvisation. This one is a bit serious, but I still hope that you like it. I played and recorded it today. Just pure piano performance. a composition like an erupting volcano. This way of playing is according to the method 'intuitive piano playing' by Folkert Hofstra and Sabine Mantel, 2 experienced pianists from the Netherlands. There is no tutorial for this. It starts with playing with your eyes closed and playing every note with your eyes closed. This way you learn to play 'with your ears'; after all, that's what music is all about?! Playing with your ears!!

In Dutch: een compositie als een uitbarstende vulkaan. Deze wijze van spelen is volgens de methode "intuïtief pianospelen" van Folkert Hofstra en Sabine Mantel, 2 ervaren pianisten uit Nederland. Er is geen tutorial hiervan. Het begint ermee met je ogen dicht spelen en elke noot met je ogen dicht spelen. Hierdoor leer je weer "met je oren" spelen; daar draait muziek toch om?! Met je oren spelen!!
