Burning Man 2022 - Deep playa sunrise

The fine folks of Funky Town invited me back in 2022 to play some tunes on their brand new DJ booth.  For the first Burning Man in 3 years I focused on music that would bring people together, put smiles on their faces, and get them moving.  This was played on Monday later afternoon into pre-sunset, and you can almost picture  the people cruising by on bikes, trikes, and art cars.

I ended up playing longer than expected to fill in for my buddy @nick-stene which gave me a chance to play a bunch of my brand new tracks and also dip into some of my recent classics.  This is the only recording I managed to get from my 3 sets on playa this year so it's great I was able to get through a bunch of tracks.

Dolbytall - Burning Man 2022 - Mystic Flyer Artcar Set

One of my favorite DJ sets at the Burn this year was on top of the Disco Space Shuttle art car on Thursday night from 11pm to 2 am. It was an incredible cosmic ride into Deep Playa. 

The soil condition was so bumpy that it created an unforgiving DJ desk surface to those of us who prefer not to play with the Sync button on. I could had gone that way but I decided to let the challenge seep through the mixes and allow for the experience to be recorded as raw and human as possible, full of flaws and the highlighted reality that the playa surface was still wrecked from the previous year's Renegade Burn, and a lack of rain on the playa which did not allow for the lake to form for as long as it normally does between Burns. The earth climate is changing, and the heat at the Burn this year was present for most of the 24hrs of each day.

Amidst a wild dust storm at Burning Man on Friday night, we took refuge in an oasis of hospitality, elegance, and luxury;  the grand hotel known as Ashram Galactica for an evening of tasty drinks and sultry celebration. I played music from my entire library having no set list prepared and choosing from both new and old tracks. This is the magic that unfolded. I hope you enjoy the journey and if you were not present, I hope you wonder into this mystical ashram at some time in the future.

Zach Walker - Ashram Galactica - Burning Man 2022

The sound I share is often inspired by the duality of the Earth, interlacing dark, light, deep and ethereal soundscapes. I also have a big thing for drums, they seem to activate a special somatic experience in our human bodies, connecting us to our primal sense, subconsciously reminding us that we are animals. I believe it's so important for us to sense into this part of ourselves and this is a big focus in my work as a psychologist too. The subconscious animal part of us influences so much more than the mind can ever make sense of, so we have to feel instead. Music can do that for us. 

There is a tribal essence weaved throughout this mix, traversing sub-genres of house including deep, Afro, minimal, organic, tech and progressive, tribal psy-trance, techno, and some delicious slow and sultry left-field bass, The sets I play are usually a mixed bag and this 3:33hr set really allowed me to explore my creativity, giving me the space to share some very meaningful and nostalgic tracks and transitions. 

In this mix I also share two original tracks, Sahul Rumble and Sweet Baby. Sweet Baby is actually a lullaby that I found myself singing to my dog one day on a beach walk a couple of years ago. Two days before I submitted this mix, I recorded the song at home with my vocals and my guitar. I was grateful to have been able to find the chords fairly quickly seeing as my poor guitar only gets picked up a couple of times a year and I haven't sung outside of the house in twenty years. The entire process unexpectedly cracked me open a little bit, reminding me of a part of myself that I haven't met in a very long time. In the background you can hear some rain and bird sounds I had recorded here at home too. It’s unfinished, unmastered and imperfect but I ended up splitting and mixing in parts of the second half, it's a very vulnerable thing for me to share.

Music and jewelry maker, Dolbytall started his electronic music journey in his young age with a love for analogic machines. Playing Techno Live sets since more than 15years, he started to produce professionally in 2018. In 2019, with his hybrid Dj setup, he won the Delta Festival Dj contest, one of the biggest music festival in south of France, which will open the doors to other events and festivals in Europe. He produced and remix afro house, progressive house, melodic techno and downtempo on labels such as Harabe Records, Suprematic, KDB Records, Sync Forward… Recently he begin to produce with his Hermano Phénoménal Elie Ô and released on La Perle Records, Lump records, Cafe de Anatolia, Family Piknik & Kosmozoo records to name a few.
