It’s no surprise to anyone who heard “The Touch” last year that Mortem has swiftly become one of drum and bass’ most wanted new stars. His fresh take on slick, weighty bass and scatty, flickering snares makes a good swathe of the deep, brooding DnB community back up against the wall.
This time, releasing “Revolta” on Demand, Mortem seems to be doing his own mini tour of the most highly-regarded labels in Europe, and he doesn’t disappoint. “Revolta” is a mercenary tune, rolling out smooth over scattered breaks, lashing out then reigning back, never letting its guard down.

Both tracks have seen support from Alix Perez, Phobia, Jubei, June Miller, Nymfo, BTK, Doc Scott and master of the dark arts himself, Skeptical. If you’re looking for your next fix of unfolding darkness at 170 bpm, you just found it.

Introducing the long-awaited third instalment from our label series, Culture, where we take a step away from the tech & neuro to feature exciting sounds from the full spectrum of drum & bass. 

CULT003 comes from the hands of Constrict, an upcoming producer who’s had a belter of a year, releasing a cracking EP with our mates at Context Audio, and collaborating with Koherent on their Dispatch release. The Anywhere EP is a wicked cross-section of Connor’s skills, with a varied sound showing of the strength and range of his production talents.

The title track Anywhere is a seriously vibed-out liquid roller, with lovely keys, warm bass and a perfectly executed vocal sample leading the track into it’s thumpy, somewhat minimal drop. A spacious bassline mirroring the keys makes up the theme of the track, while a lovely, snappy break drives the track along. The second drop switches it up, taking the sound into darker realms with some warping reeses, and a much fuller, thumping bassline. Each drop could fit effectively into two completely different sets, yet the track retains an impressive congruency, a truly versatile track.

Next up, Labyrinth, couldn’t be a different affair. Right from 0:00 you know the tones changed, with granular, eery atmosphere and percussion setting the scene for the tune. what follows is a thumping, syncopated stepper, with buckets of attitude. Starting reasonably minimal, with a driving break on top of a sub-heavy, warping bassline, the track turns up the heat with techy percussion, vocal stabs, and even more atmosphere. The beautifully crafted drum breaks and rhythms are the backbone of this tune, holding the ear and moving the feet all the way through. Even get a nice boom-bap section at the end to nod your head to, quality.

Continuing the trajectory of the release, the final track Kawachi takes it even darker, even deeper, and even more minimal to round out the EP. One for the deep drum & bass heads, an abrasive half-time beat introduces the track, which is joined by a colossal sub, subtly moving around underneath. Once again the percussion picks up the rhythm, accenting the variations as the track stomps its way along. In the second section a filtered breakbeat is added in, giving it heavy Samurai-vibes. Proper, proper hoodie music, it really doesn’t get much darker than this.

Following on from Pictures Of You ft. DRS and Rain ft. Children Of Zeus earlier this month, Lenzman sparked an uproar of excitement as speculation arose for his next LP. Today, Lenzman makes a return to Goldie’s Metalheadz label to drop the Bobby LP.

Gliding through sub-genres of hip-hop, jazz and soul, Lenzman’s new album is forward-thinking with complimenting crossovers that still connect with the current drum and bass scene. Across this boundary defying journey, Lenzman draws on a cascade of mellow and weighty subs, soft and rich vocal tones from collaborators DRS, Children Of Zeus and Konny Kon whilst guest producers Artificial Intelligence and LSB lend their notable skills to the LP with nostalgic melodies. Amongst the intricate sound design also lies sentimental influence of family and childhood that has served as the essential foundation to bind the LP together:

“I became a father a year or so before starting the album. My daughter had also named her stuffed toy “Bobby” at the time,” Lenzman explains. Although the LP was already taking shape that was fitting for me as a title. Becoming a Dad had made me revisit my own childhood and look at it from a different angle. The memories, influences and music from that period of my life were the most vivid in my mind... the moods and feelings, all translated into the music on the LP. I was raised by my father and he used to draw a lot back in those days, so it was fitting for him to draw the cover, fragments of my childhood put onto paper.”

Since stepping on the scene in 2007, Lenzman has continued to flourish as an artist known for his fluid approach and bold collaborations. Whilst producing his own originals including his debut LP Looking At The Stars in 2014 and Golden Age EP in 2016, the revered producer has also provided the remix treatment for Joe Hertz’ One Another and The Mouse Outfit’s Feeling High. Having released on the likes of Spearhead Records, SGN:LTD, Soul:r and his rising North Quarter imprint over the years, the Bobby LP on Metalheadz is primed to satisfy the bubbling cravings of patiently waiting Lenzman fans whilst capturing the ears of a wider global audience as he releases his most seminal body of work to date.
