Usually we write a little something about the music but this time knowing how this artist works I asked them directly about the project and I’m sure glad I did!

“These tracks were written at a time where I was feeling particularly fragile about my place in the drum and bass scene, both creatively and socially. There's a lot about the way this scene operates that makes it very uncomfortable for those who don't look, think or behave in a particular way. Maybe because drum and bass is an underground movement some people (mainly cis men) don't consider that the social issues that effect wider society such as queer-phobia, sexism, racism, etc. also exists within our tiny community, and that this has a profound affect on the music that comes out of this scene.

With all that said, the process of making and releasing this music was a joyous one. 'Empty Spaces' speaks to the feeling you get when a song hits different and for a split second everyone in the room loses their sense of self. That's quite a unique and precious thing, and probably what draws people to this music. However, if our spaces aren't inclusive the capacity to create moments like these dies very quickly.

'Keep It Simple', 'Learn To Speak', and 'Honesty Matters' are all call-to-actions and mantras that I say to myself to help me be better at nurturing non-toxic spaces around me. They are also me indulging in the privilege of being able to mess around and explore different sonic worlds. Ultimately allowing myself to have fun and enjoy this music.

I feel immensely grateful to have a network that is diverse, kind, open and supportive, this music speaks to that too. I did.”

Hugh Hardie’s smooth moving, funk and soul-spirited drum & bass has been making waves since he signed exclusively to leading D+B imprint Hospital Records in 2014. The Cambridge-born turned Bristol-living producer has been a busy man since his popular ‘City Soul’ EP. Now his growing repertoire is only getting bigger with his highly anticipated debut long player ‘ColourSpace’ that’s filled with liquid rollers, jazzy riffs, and feel-good flavours.

Staying true to that funk and soul delivery are tracks ‘Love Troubles’ and ‘She Moves’ – featuring up and comers GLXY – with rising drums and full-bodied basslines. Another collaborative effort comes from Shogun Audio signees Pola & Bryson in ‘Emerald City’ with sweetening doubled-up melodies and lush liquid roll-outs.

Diving into deeper D+B spaces, ‘Talk The Talk’ and ‘Closeness’ bring a cosmic energy to the mix. ‘Camera Obscura’ ft Maverick Soul highlights Hugh’s passion for percussions in parallel with ‘Shades Of Blue’ that touches on micro funk movements with clicky drums bringing a more minimalistic nature than Hugh’s regular rhythms.

For several years, Hugh has been making regular appearances across Europe and the UK for the world-renowned events brand Hospitality and is no stranger to lighting up packed dance-floors no matter the venue size. This summer you can catch him drawing from his collection at Glastonbury festival, Secret Garden Party and Sun & Bass, to name a few.

Continuing on with our FFS Live series, we bring you a recording from our show with 1985 last year at the Steel Yard, with Submarine at the helm alongside LXONE on the mic. 

This was the closing set of the night, which the label affiliate delivered in style, with bass-driven energy fueling it throughout as he weaved through various energetic breaks.
