'Upon The Apex' was created during a series of travels to the deserts of Arizona, the cities and landscapes of Israel, and a cross-country road trip from Boston to Los Angeles and back via the southern route. Recordings initiated in the summer of 2017, months before the release of his debut album for Dome of Doom, Midnight Satori. Samples lace the entire record, slicing in film interludes, vocal chops, instrument loops, and more. The album cover was shot in New Mexico at the White Sands National Monument, capturing Rah Zen in the spacious setting during his travels along the United States' southern region. It's a perfect reflection of the expansive nature of the music, intertwined into the experiences of being on the road and what led to the final shaping of the record.

Collaboration has been an important component to Rah Zen's path and the new LP, initiating the Low End Theory influenced Nightworks event in Boston over a year ago and producing with cohorts all over the globe. One of the album's standout pieces, "New Beginnings (feat. Kadeem)" is an example of the importance of collaboration to Rah Zen's process. "Kadeem's vocals were one of the final pieces of Upon the Apex before mastering," Rah Zen explains. "He came to Dephrase's studio with most of it written, but we like to be in the same room when we create music, so he finished the lyrics on the spot and knocked out the recording. We had some conversations before to go over the concept, but he already understands the soundscape I'm laying down, so it was easy for us to sync up on the motif and its place within the album."
