Sequencer People is one of the many projects which the prolific US duet formed by Roland Barker and James Husted carried out in the early eighties. Under this pseudonym, we just have the proof of a cassette recorded in 1982 by the independent American label Engram Records & Tapes, from Seattle, which collects the only concert recorded in the art gallery Roscoe Louie, from Seattle as well. Apart from this short association, the American duet Minimal Synth, formed by Roland and James, took part in lots of other projects, sometimes together with other groups (Young Scientist, or Body Falling Downstairs), other times concurrently (Audio Leter, or K7SS) and also on their own.

As James himself points out, the essence of all these groups was improvisation, that is to say, they never compounded following limited patterns. They used to have a very simple structure which they were developing without a previous schedule. For this reason they have never conceived the term ‘song’ in their wide musical production; instead, they talked about ‘performances’ or ‘improvisations’. Anyway, in all their projects we always find an obvious tendency towards experimentation, in essence, with electronic instruments and the discovery of new possibilities with analogic technology, as well as the creation of dark sounding universes, industrial and open to a lot of possibilities.
Now, for the first time, we introduce to you these two jewels of the most subterranean and trend setting electronic music, in vinyl format. We hope you will enjoy it.

PAST & FUTURE was originally self-produced and self-distributed by the band on his own label Artefact, as a limited edition of 500 cassettes, released in June 1987. It was sold out in a few months.
In 1989, the band was signed under licence to New Rose for the LP "Sounds In the Attic" (on Lively art sublabel), after New Rose had distributed the self-produced EP "Private Life" in 1988. In 1990, New Rose re issued Past & Future on cassette, and another 500 copies were sold.

Out on vinyl for the very first time, these original recordings were produced by the band on a 4-track cassette deck in 86-87, except track A2, recorded on a 8-track tape recorder at 8PM Studio in Lyon (march 87).

Long time before Handful of Snowdrops released their first and mythical album 'Land of the Damned', this cult band originally from Quebec City had produced, since their beginnings in 1984, an amazing amount of demos, although they had never managed to attract the interest and attention of the big record companies, despite their originality. In that moment, there was not a background or collective in Canada where they could fit... these are the very significant words of Jean-Pierre Mercier, co-founder of the band, in a recent interview in the digital magazine Subterock.com:
" Quebec City was not known for its strong music scene, to say the least. It gave us a kind of freedom and infused us with a carelessness that I’m still grateful to. "

It was never a reason to give up music, on the contrary; 2 years after their formation, they recorded their most famous song, 'Gabrielle', in a different version, in a little study in their hometown, which was later included in their first album. 

With this album we wanted to gather a compilation of some of their best unreleased songs, compounded in different moments but which have the same essence, always encouraged and led by Mercier brothers. All the songs are, up to now, totally unpublished, with the exception of two demo versions former to their first album ('Face to Face' and 'Gabrielle'), and they have been remastered with an enourmous care, as usual, by Yves Roussel.

Appeared from the alternative Italian stage in the late 80ies, Voxzema is one of the most unknown and peculiar groups in the european underground music scene. Despite not having launched any record before its early breakup, they did give a few concerts and, with some luck, you we’ll be able to find two of their demos in the strange compilation in cassette format 'Ologenesi’ from 1989. Thanks to an exhausting work of musical archaeology, we have found their original members and rescued their demos, most of them totally unpublished up to now.

With a totally innovative sound, Voxzema is a mixture of electronic/coldwave with psychedelic touches, blunt bases and a deep male voice which may evoke a hybrid between Cassandra Complex and OMD, to name some of them... perhaps we're talking about Cyberpunk? Or maybe it’s more concerned with Electronic-New Wave-Industrial-Krautrock & Pop...? Judge yourself!

Around 1980 Menko Konings (eM.) started the Dutch underground formation S.M. Nurse, first together with Jos Jak and later also with Anneke Stempher. S.M. Nurse experimented with collage-like music and were inspired by N.Y.-ultra, disco e.g. The band mainly performed in the Amsterdam ultra-circuit (Oktopus, Paradiso), clubs and discotheques. They were played regularly on the famous radio programmes RadioNome and Spleen and performed live on radio in the villa of the VPRO in Hilversum. They also contributed to the theme cassette Turkish Delight of the label Ding Dong and there was a cassette release on the label Top Tape. At the end of 1983, S.M. Nurse split up.

Not everything is known and explained. On the fall of 18th century Mesmerism managed to transform simple suggestions into the modern hypnotism known today, throwing the basics for other scientific disciplines largely diffused in our times, as psicotherapy, psychology, music therapy.  But the animal magnetism conceived by Mesmer was only a pseudo scientific practice, it worked for other causes than those believed by its own discoverer.  Sometimes things work perfectly for reasons man cannot understand.
L.A.S.'s Crime, an italian duo fascinated by electronic music, started its activity in 80's with a long list of demotapes, partecipating to several compilations and later recording two vinyls for well known european labels. Mesmérique is their third album reissued for Domestica Records, created with 11 original recordings taken from their '80s 4tracks demotapes, but restored today in a professional studio: you will be scattered into a path of 11 vivid and hypnotic visions never reissued before on vinyl. Tracks are ordered chronologically, from the first to the last years of 80s, showing the creative travel of the band towards the decade. Listening after listening, you will gradually become more conscious of the hypnotic nature of this music, full of contrasts, filled with endless repetitions echoing into memory in mysterious ways: a concise and minimalistic style who has kept alive this music during the last 30 years, by porting it from tape to cd, and later through internet, from a fan to another, from a musical genre to another, from a decade to another.  This music has been jealously preserved by those who knew and loved it: but the simplicity of its structures, the oblique melodies, the small length of the songs, are apparently weak reasons for this 30 years long devotion, it is somehow plausible there can be other reasons, far more complex to explain than it would be legitimate to believe.  So no coincidence that the tape is also called magnetic stripe, and that the turntable is a magneto acustic device.

Cult Club is the musical project of Berlin artists Sally Jørgensen and László Antal. It was formed shortly after Sally and László realized that they could no longer spend their days draped over the couch drinking Pálinka and listening to "Axel F" on repeat. They then decided to put to use their god's gift of talent they so uniquely acquired, and formed Cult Club.

Their interest in melodic oldies songs and electro pop singles became the driving influence for their musical collaboration. They wanted to create a sound that made the people as mad and wild on the dance floor just as it did for the neighbours who couldn't stand listening to Sally and László s music blaring in the apartment complex.

Having a mirrored background in the arts, design, film and performance world, Sally and László decided to create a collaborative project that combined their musical and artistic backgrounds into one. DIY art films and electro pop is the by-product.

We're so excited to finally present you the debut album of Pola Tog, the musical moniker of Joaquín Urbina a Venezuelan audiovisual artist based in Barcelona.

Joaquín starts making electronic music in 1999. Influenced by the EBM, techno and electro-punk scene from the late 90's he uses the newly bought MPC sampler to make his first tracks.

Around 2002 he begins producing cuts, remixing and playing live gigs under the name TBN202, in 2004 edits his first Ep vinyl "Fingernails” under his own label No-Domain Recordings.

After some years away from the machines and focusing on his professional graphic-videomaking work, Joaquín retakes music production in 2012 giving shape to his new project Pola Tog, an electronic new wave sound based fully on hardware synthesizers and drum machines flavored with electro-EBM-synth-pop-post-punk and automatic dada lyrics.

Joaquin collaborates with Slovenian visual artist Ana Gale, who translates Pola Tog's post-digital miscommunication tunes into a glitchy poetic visual language turning live shows into a crispy, cinematic and dark AV performance.

"We’d always hoped that people would want to dance to our stuff, but there was no obvious scene that we belonged to" (Chris Bishop, Son Of Sam’s frontman, 2016).

We all here at Domestica have been dancing for some time now to this our second (and last for the time being) release by mid-80s West Yorkshire industrial disco act Son Of Sam, an album consisting of all the instrumental tracks on the very rare cassette released by Final Image in 1985, The Collapse Of Ancient Funk (1984-85 A.D.). Among others, you will find here for the first time ever on vinyl gems such as the futuristic 1985 remix of “Not A Second Wasted”, inspired by Holger Czukay’s experimentalism, and the early-electro sounding hit “Playground”, along with the latest offering from the band, the previously unreleased track “You Got Me” (2016, MP3 download only).
The Special Edition double LP includes both the song-based tracks (Vol. 1) and the instrumental ones (Vol. 2) from those legendary recordings.

"Sometime during 1984, during a period of Orwellian mass unemployment, I moved into a house in Leeds that had a basement filled with the collective equipment of The Cassandra Complex, O Yuki Conjugate and Mr Tom Fazzini. My pathetic contribution was the first Korg drum machine which nobody used and was eventually bought by Jez from Utah Saints. I don't suppose he used it either. It sounded awful.

Music at this time was largely devoted to guitar-oriented production, but the unwitting advantage these people had was our mistrust of the fretboard. Then Electro happened, we got an 808, and Son of Sam was born when I needed a nasty name to scribble on a cassette. As time went on, Razors and Mr Cheese fleshed my meanderings out into a "real band", we played a few dates around Europe, brought out some vinyl on Rouska and then logically destroyed ourselves when Techno arrived."

This is the first release on our new imprint Ex Machina; “Exit/Accidental (Abstract)” is a carefully chosen selection from the first cassette-only album “Exit/Accidental” (1988) by prolific Berlin-based producer and music publisher Mickeyblitz Finnkrieg, very active in the late 80s who, besides self-producing and distributing his music, also single-handedly ran a thriving underground cassette label called Deaf Eye, releasing about ten different productions and several international compilations. M. Finnkrieg worked in parallel lines to any known music circuit. This might be the main reason why his music has remained highly confidential so far. Incidentally: a Mickey Finn – or simply a Mickey – is a drink laced with a psychoactive drug or incapacitating agent given to someone without their knowledge, intending to incapacitate them.

Heavily indebted to bands like Severed Heads and British Industrials in the vein of Cabaret Voltaire, early Test Dept. or Sonic Youth, the tracks selected on this album present the outcome of many a late practice evening and live sessions well into the small hours, experimenting in a completely self-made music lab with tape loops, resistors, capacitors, transistors, 8-bit samplers, guitars and a nice array of synths (Korg MS-20, Roland SH-1, Roland TB 303, Korg Polysix…), drum machines (Roland TR 505, TR 707, CR-78…) and loads of effect gadgets producing a distinctive sound, not far from proto-techno/electro and industrial-disco with touches of ebm and out-there funk. An all-analogic production and loaded with pre-recorded reel-to-reel samples, this recording, salvaged after 30 years, is a perfect illustration of the DIY philosophy and independent spirits of the time, cutting through time barriers with a sound as valid today as when it was first made.

When music production became increasingly computerised a little later, I did not like it anymore. (Mickeyblitz Finnkrieg, 2018).

This is volume one of Cosmographia (International Cassette Culture), a selection of tracks originally released on cassette in the late 80s plus some never published ones by three European acts: Idee du Femelle (Barcelona, Spain), Genetic Factor (Amsterdam, Holland) and Collectionism (Frankfurt, Germany).

Their common link is the “non-musician” concept as originally stated by Brian Eno, also to be found in Kraftwerk, Can, Cluster and some modern classical composers like Ligeti or Cage. All three were deeply involved in the live scene and the self-distribution ethics of their time. All of them innovated in aesthetics as well as music itself and that showed in their live performances, working with artists from other fields to create a sound-and-vision experience recaptured here on vinyl.

Idee du Femelle, starting in 1984, managed to record 9 cassettes, most of them self-produced and distributed by mail. Toni Parera, the man behind Idee du Femelle, is a versatile musician who wrote music in several electronic styles, such as New Age, experimental, Berlin school and ambient.

Genetic Factor, an impersonation of Richard Zeilstra, started out in 1977, mainly out of love for an improbable merge of Industrial and experimental pop. His heart was more into making music than marketing it, although he can be heard on several compilations such as the relatively well-known 'Radionome' and 'Colonial Vipers', both from 1982. He worked with a vast array of artists beyond music.

Collectionism were brothers Peter and Tomas Fey and Peter Prochir. Founded in 1984, they are digging in a quarry of pop culture, searching for something they can quote. They prove that you can create music with natural sounds and a synthesizer with a feeling in it. Athmospheric soundscapes, handmade and synthetic, are interrupted by vocal effects or harsh, raw sounds. With their live shows, Collectionism created an optical and acoustic feast for eyes and ears.

" Kremlyn va néixer a finals del 1983, el teclista es deia JJ Ibáñez i tenia 17 anys i la vocalista era la Montse Berman i tenia 15, dels barris del Sant Crist i de Pomar respectivament. S'havien conegut quan eren encara un o dos anys més joves en un grup de revetlla que es deia Xarxa, que feia versions de les cançons de moda. En veure'ls i escoltar-los, pensaves immediatament en Yazoo, però els agradaven també Depeche Mode, Thompson Twins, B-52's i fins i tot Pink Floyd.

JJ feia servir dos instruments. El primer era un orgue electrònic Casiotone de quatre octaves i tecles de mida estàndard, proveït d'un petit repertori de ritmes programats i d'un baix seqüenciat aparellat amb cada ritme. D'aquest instrument, ell extreia la caixa de ritmes, el baix (que feia amb la mà esquerra) i les melodies (que tocava amb la dreta), a més de les seqüències d'arpegis. És a dir, gairebé tot. L'altre instrument era un orgue de fusta de dos teclats, un moble musical de saleta, l'aspecte retro del qual no s'adeia gaire amb la modernitat del Casio. Aquest orgue havia estat manipulat perquè, mitjançant un pedal, es disparés la snare drum d'un dels seus ritmes programats (segurament un beguine) i reforcés el ritme base que aportava el Casio, de manera que, cada vegada que arribava un temps parell, JJ pressionava el pedal amb el peu dret i sonava una snare que se superposava a la snare esquifida del ritme base. L'orgue de fusta no tenia sons gaire reeixits i, a part de l'invent descrit, JJ només el feia servir com a complement en algunes cançons, com ara en Sombras en la tierra, on aportava els fons d'orgue eclesial. A més, la seva estructura feixuga el va convertir en el suport físic del Casio. Cal dir també que, a causa de la complexitat de tot plegal, JJ havia de tocar assegut, tot i que més tard va acostumar-se a accionar tots els aparells dret. Pensareu que una caixa de ritmes independent hauria simplificat les coses i millorat el so alhora, però malauradament hauria calgut una renovació completa de l'instrumental, ja que no hauria estat possible la sincronització amb el Casiotone.

Montse cantava amb el micròfon sempre a la mà, perquè no hi havia peu, i la seva actitud era força tímida. Quan presentava les cançons, la seva veu era gairebé inaudible, però canviava quan cantava. Tenia un timbre preciós, molt polit, tot i que abusava dels refilets en acabar les frases. Amb tot, era una de les veus més boniques i innocents que he sentit, sobretot en aquesta primera època. Aconseguia uns matisos de tristor en cançons com Rutines o Me haces daño difícilment superables. JJ era l'encarregat de compondre les músiques i ella feia les lletres i, en principi, també la melodia vocal, tot i que en la pràctica molt sovint acabava apropiant-se d'alguna melodia de teclat de JJ per bastir-hi la lletra, de manera que és difícil destriar que feia realment cadascú... "

We are very pleased to announce that the third publication in the Ex Machina series is now available for pre-order: L’Embrasse is a compilation originally released in 1987, less than 50 copies were distributed at the time through local shops and it is a portrayal of a unique and very little known scene, generated in the deep underground milieu of Amsterdam. None of the tracks presented on this album has ever been re-released after the ultra-limited original edition on cassette format by Top Tape appeared. At the time, a dozen different acts were featured: Menko (S.M. Nurse founder), Robbie Horsfall, Peter Van Garderen (Nine Circles founder), Der Rudi, Antonia (Tonny Timmermans), No Honey From These, Incredible Coöp (S.M. Nurse members), Beatnik Love Affair, Tranquil Eyes, Cheiron, Spin & Kokkie and The Male Ego.

“We had no name for the music we made. Top Tape released the recordings of those hometape sessions, jams and performances on cassette tape in particular.” tells us Menko Konings, founder of S.M. Nurse and Top Tape independent label; “I was forced to start a label (1983) to release my first solo-tape. This is how Top Tape was created. A few years in a row I released music from friends and myself. L’embrasse is a good example of this. (…) We recorded a lot: solo, try-outs, rehearsals, jams, live performances, demos, final versions and spoken audio clips from radio and TV. We also experimented with tapes”.

The recordings offer a fascinating insight into several different independent scenes coexisting in Amsterdam more than 30 years ago, which we can now retrieve on this exclusive edition of 200 units.
