PROSPEKT PODKAST #057 | SWARM INTELLIGENCE [47] 

We are very happy to welcome one of our favourite Producers, Live Act, DJs and Influences onto the podcast series with 80 minutes of tense atmospherics, uncompromising levels of distortion and stark, astute beats constitute a distinctive sound that Simon Hayes has been honing for more than a decade under his Swarm Intelligence guise.

Visceral, densely textured, and intricately programmed, Swarm Intelligence’s distinctive sound comes from almost a decade of releases, spanning multiple genres and tempos. His non-conformist approach to music has earned him a solid reputation worldwide.

Born in Dublin, Simon Hayes found a home in the city’s thriving bass and techno scene in the early 2000s. He became a regular attendee at nights run by the likes of Kaboogie and Electric City, and later went on to DJ and host events.

A student of computer and electronic engineering, he later focussed his studies on artificial intelligence and began to apply learned concepts to music. He graduated in 2009 and moved to Berlin shortly thereafter, where he founded his Swarm Intelligence project. Initially intended as an antidote to the city’s then monotone four-to-the-floor offerings, his sound was raw, high tempo and distortion-laden, and better suited to illegal raves and squat parties.

It was this abrasive tone that led him to the doors of the seminal Ad Noiseam label, with whom he went on to release two rhythmic noise albums: “Faction” (2014) and “Rust” (2015). He also began touring extensively, including an AV performance at the infamous Maschinenfest. His hefty live sets later drew the attention of the Boiler Room crew, who invited him to perform at a Berlin edition of their show at the end of 2015.

Drawn to the emerging bleak and brutalist techno sound at the time, Hayes returned to his roots. His debut EP “The Lighthouse” (2016) on the then up-and-coming label Voitax was widely supported on floors across the continent. This was followed by releases on Instruments of Discipline (“Home Recordings”, 2017) and Earwiggle (“Flatlands”, 2017).

Propelled by this momentum, he went on to release his widely-acclaimed fourth album. “Against the Dying Light” (2018), released on Voitax, was written as a reaction to the shift in global politics towards fear and oppression. "If Industrial Techno is a sewer – flowing under the infrastructure of club culture, always there, hardly changing – then this is a horrific eruption from those subterranean depths, impossible to ignore or forget once exposed to it" – The Wire. Swarm Intelligence debuted this album during a memorable live set on Berghain’s Säule floor, and proceeded to tour across Europe.

2019 saw Hayes return to his rave beginnings with a drum-machine focussed EP on New York Trax Imports, as well as a cutting-edge technoid release on the renowned 47 label. His “Ultraware” EP (2020) on Voitax utilized experimental DSP and modular synthesis to reimagine classic rave foundations for dancefloors of the future.

Up next, Hayes returns to 47 – "47026 sees straight-up slammers and bass-heavy broken grinders collide, tied together with the high-grade sound design we've come to expect from Swarm Intelligence."

Surit is immersed in the intense red universe that DOMINANT has created for its first anniversary.

He carries a suitcase containing more than 15 years of experience in electronic music. Better known as the 50% of NX1 duo, project which started at the end of 2011, he's been playing around since the early 2000s.

After being half of his life in the business Surit is a connoisseur of the scene and has reached such maturity that allows him to deliver his music proposal in a powerful and elegant way. His sets entwine a wide range techno styles, heavy and wet atmospheres which cover the dance floor, harsh noises, rocking breaks and fat basses are his club show signature.

Nowadays he is engaged in various musical projects such as managing his own label Nexe Records, keeping the NX1 project and releasing his own material as well as some other collaborations.

Øperat is an experimental industrial project born by the Italian duo in 2013. Always passionate about electronic music, they approached the world of live and production right away. Suggesting a completely modular set up. Their sound is characterized by dark environments with dynamic bass lines and rhythms, aggressive and sharp sounds. After several years spent in a studio they had the opportunity to play live shows at one of the main clubs in the area"Hyper" (VI). In which they had several opportunities to perform with international artists. Last year they recorded some DJ sets for Sehnsucht Kollektiv, The Slave,Untreated,Vumantra,M.powerhouse,Modern Bön,Brutal Forms and The Forgotten.In February 2019 they have their first release in a various artist on Kloster recordings and December 2020 TEMPLER (Area Z) November 2021 V/A Vumantra and December V/A Brutal Forms.Øperat is a strong and solid project in continuous evolution created by two old childhood friends.

Biography:
As a well-established artist, Rommek has creatively expanded in his own sound, as well as carving his way into the current techno and experimental scene. His extensive interest in sound design is crafted within the dense atmospheres, heavy broken drums and dynamic tones found within his productions. The London based producer released his debut 12” 'Thought Patterns EP' on Weekend Circuit in 2014. Since then, he’s released music on Leyla records, Methodical and in 2016 he joined the seminal Blueprint Records.
After various releases that grounded him within the Blueprint family, Rommek then completed his most establish work to date, the ‘Set In Stone Trilogy’ in 2018. The three part release compromises of 12 tracks, original and remixes from key members of the Blueprint team, James Ruskin, OVR, Broken English Club and Makaton. 
Torn Relics, the experimental project between Rommek + Aimee Mullen (Violinist and Vocalist) was formed during 2018. Their debut EP, The Poisoned Chalice, released on Sacred Court, featured a remix by label owner SNTS. In 2020 the duo’s debut 8-Track album: Abolish The Dogma, was released on Leyla Records.
