After the unbridled success that was "Volkwein", Super Flu's collaboration with The Dortmund Philharmonic, the always on point Monberry label now revisits the package with the help of some fine contemporary remixers, namely Kollektiv Turmstrasse, Monkey Safari and Bebetta.

Super Flu, aka Herzblut Recordings regulars and German pair Felix Thielemann & Mathias Schwarz, really conjured up some magic with the original so these remixes, which reinterpret in fine style, are more than welcome.

First up are Kollektiv Turmstrasse, a rare act that infuse their sound with something more - extra soul, depth and meaning. On their remix of the title track, they go for a trademark deep, brooding and slowly unfolding vibe with subtle synth modulations, buried drums and a rising sense of tension.

The curious and off kilter German duo Monkey Safari are up next. First they rework 'Bratzke' with a sensitive sense of touch. Underlapping, rubbery drums roll below churchy and hymnal chords. Softly spoken vocals add intimacy and you can see this one really making for quite a moment on the right dance floor. Secondly, they serve up a digital bonus remix of the same track that makes less use of the vocal and places plenty of emphasis on their lush arrangement and true sense of musicality.

Lastly we have Bebetta, a playful producer who infuses her music with charming melody and a real sense of personality. She has also recently won the Tresor Newcomer Award for her impressive DJ sets around Berlin. Her version of 'Volkwein' is patient and spacious. Glowing harmonically it soothes mind body and soul with playful patterns and clever use of filters.

This EP is an elegant and magical release that proves house music can be so much more than a physical and functional thing, and can instead stir real emotion when in the right hands.

The second part of the „Diorama“ remixes offers again some of the finest producers around. Starting with Kollektiv Turmstrasse! What kicks off as a Chez Damier groove makes the transition into a loose dub monster. Collecting traces of the original sound and dispersing them with magic movements we see why Kollektiv Turmstrasse are a top act. Shifting the attention from the front to the far back from the obvious to the abstract... Turmstrasse create that parallel groove on top of the groove which seems to tighten up with every minute. Fine particles of sounds are sprayed onto the relentless groove and make it a real crowd pleaser.

Abendpfauenauge (Smerinthus ocellata)
Das Abendpfauenauge verdankt seinen Namen der markanten Augenzeichnung auf den Hinterflügeln. Die rindenfarbenen Vorderflügel bieten eine perfekte Tarnung, wenn es tagsüber an Baumstämmen ruht. Bei einer Störung zieht es die Vorderflügel ruckartig nach oben. Der Falter gibt nun das Erscheinungsbild eines Gesichtes ab, das den Störenfried plötzlich anstarrt. Durch schaukelndes Vor- und Zurückbewegen des Körpers wird diese bedrohliche Wirkung noch verstärkt.

Eyed hawkmoth (Smerinthus ocellata)
The Eyed hawkmoth owes its name to the distinctive eye drawing on its hind wings. The bark-colored forewings provide perfect camouflage when resting on tree trunks during the day. In case of a disturbance, it pulls the forewings up jerkily. The moth now gives off the appearance of a face that suddenly stares at the troublemaker. Forward and backward swinging movements of the body intensify this threatening effect.


Oleanderschwärmer (Daphnis nerii)
Der Oleanderschwärmer ist mit seiner unglaublichen Farbenpracht ein Sinnbild tropischer Schönheit. Als Wanderfalter fliegt er selten auch in unsere Gefilde ein. Mit einer Spannweite von bis zu 13 Zentimetern ist er ein wahrer „Jumbo“. Sein Flugstil ähnelt dem von Kolibris. Er erreicht dabei Geschwindigkeiten von 50 km/h. Sein Saugrüssel, mit dem er an Blüten Nektar tankt, wird so lang wie sein Körper.

Oleander hawkmoth (Daphnis nerii)
With its incredible colors, the Oleander hawkmoth is a symbol of tropical beauty. It rarely flies into our fields as a migratory butterfly. With a wingspan of up to 13 centimeters, it is a true "Jumbo". Its flying style is similar to that of hummingbirds. It reaches speeds of up to 50 km/h. Its proboscis, the tubular mouthpart used for feeding on the nectar of flowers, becomes as long as its body.

Fresh faces Christoph Deckert and Christian Schilgen aka Deorbiting concoct delightfully level-headed string-based music in the Paranorama EP which includes two originals, one collaboration and three remixes. Paranorama is a lofty, majestic string-ridden composition, where sounds bounce like clouds off the fluid production. Synths adorn expansive pads in an overall immersive ambience that enchants and animates. Niko Schwinds remix takes a more dubby approach, while subtly maintaining the initial unrepressed atmosphere. Next up, Kalipo manages to reimagine the track into a riff-heavy, synth-indulging experience. Cara No, a joint effort with Aaaron, unveils a more moody setting, following in the same pensive yet stimulating resonance. On the flipside, Zero Wing showcases a gloomy soundscape with glitched out pads and eerie details. Sunken piano keys add to the melancholy, elevating the multi-layered construction. Kuriose Naturale adds shrilling bits and spiralling loops of impending doom, offering a more dramatic and acid-tinged version of the original.

This powerful track is called Neuntöter or Red-backed Shrike. It is a very special songbird, because it spears its prey such as insects, juvenile birds, reptiles or small mammals for mincing and food storage on thorns or young branches. Formerly it was thought he would kill nine before eating one. Hence it is called as much as “nine-slayer“ in German. The bird with the distinctive eye stripe kills its prey with a strong, hook-shaped raptor-like beak. At first glance, this falcon-like upper beak is also the only external distinctive feature, which hints at its "martial attitude“. From his remaining appearance, it looks more like a „usual" songbird. I tried to describe this ambivalence with musical counterpointing: Hard beats, brute basslines and shrill sounds to clarify the predatory nature of it, whereas conciliatory pads and lovely bell-sounds highlight his being as a precious gift of mother nature and important gear of our ecosystem.

Dieser kraftvolle Track heißt Neuntöter. Dies ist ein ganz besonderer Singvogel der seine Beute, wie Insekten, Reptilien, Jungvögel oder kleine Säugetiere, zum Zerkleinern und Anlegen von Vorratslagern auf Dornen und spitzen Ästen aufspießt. Früher dachte man, er würde neun Tiere töten, bevor er eines verspeist, daher sein furchteinflößender Name. Er tötet seine Beute mit einem kräftigen, hakenförmigen und greifvogelähnlichem Schnabel. Dieser falkenartige Oberschnabel ist auf den ersten Blick auch das einzige äußerliche Erkennungsmerkmal, was sein „martialisches“ Wesen erahnen lässt. Von seinem restlichen Erscheinungsbild her wirkt er eher wie ein "gewöhnlicher" Singvogel. Diese Ambivalenz habe ich versucht mit musikalischen Kontrapunktierungen zu beschreiben: Harte Beats, brachiale Basslines und schrille Sounds, um die räuberische Natur des Vogels mit dem markanten Augenstreif zu verdeutlichen; wohingegen versöhnliche Pads und liebliche Glockensounds sein Wesen als kostbares Geschenk von Mutter Natur und wichtiges Zahnrad unseres Ökosystem herausstellen sollen.
