Astro Drifter (Ft. Pdubz)

DJ Hybrid started out DJ-ing in 2004 in the city of Coventry and quickly became well known for his diverse styles and his monthly podcasts, it wasn't until 2008 that he started to learn how to produce music and in 2010 he started up his first label called ‘Audio Addict Records’ where his debut release ‘Step Up’ was released on a exclusive vinyl run and was sold worldwide. In 2012, after locking himself away in the studio for years he was signed to DJ Vapour’s mighty ’36 Hertz Recordings’ with his debut release ‘I Get Mash Up’. Then in 2013 DJ Hybrid moved down to the south coast where he started up new label ‘Deep in the Jungle Records’ and became a regular within the Brighton Jungle Drum & Bass Scene. Later that year he achieved his first number 1 chart position with his track ‘Badboy’ which gained massive support throughout the scene and was championed by many DJ's as a modern Jungle classic. In 2015 he won two awards at the We Love Jungle Awards in London, one for ‘Best Breakthrough Producer’ and the other for ‘Best Breakthrough DJ’. After the success of the awards he decided the time was right to start working on his debut album and in November of 2015 his debut album ‘Mixed Origins’ was released and received support from across the entire Dance music scene and also made it to number 1 in the Juno albums chart. In 2017 his label 'Deep in the Jungle Records' won the award for 'Best Jungle Label' at the We Love Jungle Awards which was a huge milestone in his career not just for himself as a producer but as a label owner too. Since then Deep in the Jungle Records has been recognized as one of the most prolific and forward thinking labels in the modern Jungle scene. Over the last few years DJ Hybrid has become one of the leaders of the modern Jungle movement and is a firm favourite with Drum & Bass fans and Junglists alike, his unique style has made him stand out amongst the crowd and gain a loyal following worldwide. His many contributions to the Jungle Drum & Bass scene includes anthems such as 'Puffin Erbz' and 'Badboy' he has also remixed such Jungle classics as Good Body Girl, Luv Ta Luv Ya, Gallist by Top Cat and The Hitman by Marvellous Cain. Spotlight Mix: Beat Merchants

London certainly doesn’t need any long winded introduction as to its importance in the drum and bass scene and it’s no surprise that Kastro and Scudd chose to use inspiration from our legendary city for their first EP for Serial Killaz.

The title track ‘LDN TING’ reeks of intensity. If you were lucky enough to visit The End, imagine this going off at 2am next to a gang of gas and lighter equipped corner creepers. Its indestructible bassline riffs coincide perfectly with tough breaks, rolling percussion and a sneaky one liner vocal.

‘Ease Out’ takes a familiar and well loved stance, easily fitting into the Serial Killaz back catalogue. It’s flipped out, relaxed vibes of the intro combine perfectly with the rubberband style bass that certainly takes inspiration from vibes of an era gone by.

If there ever was a reason to kick back and skank out then the half step vibes of ‘Something About You’ is probably your one stop shop of 2019 and beyond. Showing their versatility in numbers here, Kastro and Scudd fire out a right old grumpy bastard of a tune with muddy beats, bass and a cheeky little arpeggiated riff.

Kastro and Scudd split into two for ‘Who We Are’ and ‘Forever’ respectfully. The first being a vocal led box of tricks, initial assumptions bring forth a commercial dancefloor track but that’s certainly far from the truth after the breakdown. Scudd takes the end of the EP and what a way to finish. ‘Forever’ jumps on the vibe of recent months with a bouncy house organ riff and skippy breakbeats.

A clever, well respected package that’s a fine tribute to the many genres, styles and flavours of our capital city. No ramping. Newcastle crew representing hard.

My mum has always been extremely creative and musical, she sung and wrote songs solo  in bands since I can remember. She actually took a stereo (which she had pat tested) into the hospital to play Stevie Wonder whilst she gave birth to me. Hence some of the first artists I remember listening to were Stevie Wonder, Louis Armstrong, India Irie and more only wonderful artists. I was played a lot of different genres which I’ve tried continue. Music has been one of the main elements of my life ever since.

I’d always wanted a creative career, I decided to take the career path of acting through Drama School a few years back. Alongside this I’d always loved the idea of producing using software to literally create anything you wanted. I had a small dabble on Logic at one point but the time just wasn’t right and I never got the nak. At the start of lockdown, back in April, I managed to get my hands on the gloriously shitty Numark Party Mix. I was on them for a couple of months but I knew depending on how fast I learnt that I needed to upgrade ASAP. Economically I didn’t want to be spending a few hundred every time I wanted to upgrade. So I now own the beautiful Pioneer DDJ 800s which I only intend to learn as much as I can as time goes on. And we’ll look at beyond that when we get to it.

My first gig was in Nottingham at Rock City with my mum and we went to see Imelda May, an amazing rockabilly revival. I went to gigs with my mum for a while before I went with anyone else and I loved it. We danced our socks off seeing Basement Jaxx and managed to get Kano’s t-shirt after moshing at the Plug. We had fun.

I love a good bootleg yes! The Whitney Houston and Amerie bootlegs I’ve previously used in mixes were no brainers. Whether you churn out rollers all day or not, everyone loves a good sing song to a classic. I think it’s important to try and grab the attention of the listener with something that’s really going to make their ears prick. I think bootlegs are perfect for this.

Some of my favourite hometown venues in Sheffield would definitely have to be the likes of Yellow Arch, Hope Works, Dina and Hex. I’ve had some of my best nights/events at these venues, needless to say they all put on a banging night if you want a pRoPA skank.

I’d definitely say my goals as a DJ are long term if I could even label myself as a DJ yet haha. Alongside my career in acting that I am perusing I’m hoping that the two will fit in quite nicely together. Ive got a lot of grinding to do first though.
