"Sumsemann" was a big cockroach who lived in the spring on a chestnut tree in the garden of Peter's parents, not far from the large lawn with many asters. He had been married, but his wife was now dead. She had been eaten by a chicken that found her when she was crawling about in the yard in the afternoon looking for some food. For a cockchafer, it is in fact very dangerous to go for a walk during the day. Just as people sleep at night, so cockchafers sleep during the day.

This text is the opening to the book "Peterchens Mondfahrt" (Peter and Anneli's Journey to the Moon) by Gerdt von Bassewitz. It is one of the best-loved German children's books and has been a bestseller in Germany to this day.
