Students of Decay presents The Dip, a new full-length recording by Berlin-based artist and composer Thomas Ankersmit, marking his debut with the label and sixth album to date. Comprised of two expansive, sidelong pieces composed entirely on the Serge Modular synthesizer, it signals a subtle yet significant shift in Ankersmit’s trajectory, imbuing the hyper-physical, psychoacoustic intensities of his live performances with introspective, atmospheric, and even melodic elements.

Recorded using the Wildtronics SAAM system and a Sony PCM-M10 handheld recorder. Location is Mosquito Lake in Northeast Ohio on March 19, 2017. Canada geese fly near a large lake out to their feeding grounds. Song Sparrows, American Robin, Red-Wing Blackbirds, Cardinals, Blue Jay, and more can be heard. None of the birds are closer than 50 feet, and most of the Canada Geese are 1/8-1/4 of a mile away.

These tracks compare the difference between the Pro Mini Parabolic Stereo PIP Microphone to the larger Pro Mono-Stereo Microphone. The Pro Mini gives semi narrow stereo image, while the Pro Mono provides a nice isolated subject. Adding in the Stereo Microphones of the Pro Mono-Stereo gives a wider field of view than the Pro Mini.
